    The role of ecolabeling in fisheries management and conservation

The definitive version was published in Conservation Biology 20 (2006): 392-398, doi:10.1111/j.1523-1739.2006.00319.x.The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) regulate the ecolabeling of products from fisheries with the aim of promoting sustainable fishery practices. To date 11 fisheries have attained full certification and a further 7 are under review. Together these fisheries offer 220 ecolabeled marine products to consumers. Despite great potential to encourage sustainable fisheries, and thereby bring conservation benefits to marine systems, there are a range of issues that may serve to limit the wider uptake of MSC ecolabeled products. These include a general lack of consumer concern for marine fish and sustainable fisheries, an absence of guaranteed continued financial benefits to participating fishers and difficulties of quality assurance which are related to the complexities in monitoring compliance of marine fisheries. In addition, it is apparent that property-rights over the fishery seem to be an essential prerequisite for engagement in MSC and this is one major impediment to wider uptake of the scheme in current marine fisheries, which tend to be open access. Some modifications to the current scheme may be needed if wider participation of marine fishers is to be achieved. These may include a tiered approach to certification, certification of fishers rather than fisheries, governmental facilitation to assist the latter, and greater engagement with retailers and buyers rather than individual consumers.     Educational interventions for children with ASD: A systematic literature review 2008–2013

    Systematic literature reviews can play a key role in underpinning evidence-based practice. To date, large-scale reviews of interventions for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have focused primarily on research quality. To assist practitioners, the current review adopted a broader framework which allowed for greater consideration of educational utility. Between July and August 2013, 20 databases were searched, alongside web searches and hand searches, to identify ASD intervention studies published between 2008 and 2013. This search yielded 6,232 articles and the subsequent screening and evaluation process identified 85 best evidence studies. Studies were grouped into categories and individual interventions were assessed and classified as providing most; moderate; some; or a small amount of evidence. Interventions with most evidence tended to focus on younger children and core difficulties associated with ASD. Emerging trends, such as increasing evidence for technology-based interventions and peer-mediated interventions, were identified. An encouraging finding for practitioners is that in 59% of the studies, interventions were undertaken with or by school staff. Implications for school psychology practice as well as factors to consider when selecting educational interventions are discussed

    Bright X-ray radiation from plasma bubbles in an evolving laser wakefield accelerator

    We show that the properties of the electron beam and bright x-rays produced by a laser wakefield accelerator can be predicted if the distance over which the laser self-focuses and compresses prior to self-injection is taken into account. A model based on oscillations of the beam inside a plasma bubble shows that performance is optimised when the plasma length is matched to the laser depletion length. With a 200~TW laser pulse this results in an x-ray beam with median photon energy of \unit[20]{keV}, >6×108> 6\times 10^{8} photons above \unit[1]{keV} per shot and a peak brightness of \unit[3 \times 10^{22}]{photons~s^{-1}mrad^{-2}mm^{-2} (0.1\% BW)^{-1}}.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Testing Tablet Computers in Nursing Education: A Comprehensive Evaluation Framework

    Background: Tablet Computers (TCs) and other mobile digital devices are rapidly changing the way we communicate and access information in our personal and professional lives. Scarce research exists regarding their effectiveness in promoting the learning of health professionals. This paper describes the evaluation framework used in a study to test TCs in a post-diploma baccalaureate nursing program in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) state of Qatar.Purpose: The evaluation framework was structured around 10 objectives designed to assess the impact of TC integration into the evidence-based practice (EBP) and reflective practice (RP) components of a scholarship course. Evaluation variables included perceptions of knowledge, confidence, comfort, satisfaction and technical skill before and after the 7-week TC implementation; students’ usage patterns and attitudes about the usefulness of TCs in promoting their learning related to EBP and RP were also examined; in addition, students’ views about the impact of TCs on the learning environment and their engagement in the learning process were sought.Methods: A mixed method descriptive design was used to assess outcomes of interest. Qualitative methods (focus groups, participant observation, field notes and reflective journals) were used to capture subjective perspectives of TC users. Quantitative methods (pre-test/posttest, activity logs and skills labs) were used to assess change in knowledge, attitude and technical proficiency over time.Results: The evaluation framework used to assess process and outcome variables in this study combined structural, philosophical, theoretical, pedagogical and methodological elements. These included the logic model, participatory action, theory-based course concepts, as well as a learning taxonomy involving cognitive, affective and psychomotor competencies.Conclusion: The value of a comprehensive evaluation plan executed in tandem with TC implementation is highlighted

    Ultra-high brilliance multi-MeV γ\gamma-ray beam from non-linear Thomson scattering

    We report on the generation of a narrow divergence (θ2.5\theta\approx 2.5 mrad), multi-MeV (EMAX=18E_\text{MAX} = 18 MeV) and ultra-high brilliance (2×1019\approx 2\times10^{19} photons s1^{-1} mm2^{-2} mrad 2^{-2} 0.1\% BW) γ\gamma-ray beam from the scattering of an ultra-relativistic laser-wakefield accelerated electron beam in the field of a relativistically intense laser (dimensionless amplitude a02a_0\approx2). The spectrum of the generated γ\gamma-ray beam is measured, with MeV resolution, seamlessly from 6 MeV to 18 MeV, giving clear evidence of the onset of non-linear Thomson scattering. The photon source has the highest brilliance in the multi-MeV regime ever reported in the literature

    Psychological models in sport psychology:A preliminary investigation

    Applied psychology is characterised by a variety of theoretical models, informing distinct approaches to classification, explanation, and intervention in service-delivery. Such theoretical or psychological models include behavioural, biological, cognitive, humanistic, psychodynamic, and social paradigms, with exposure to these models and attitude formation occurring within the structured university-based stage of sport psychology development. It is, therefore, important for the sport psychological domain to investigate developing attitudes, given these models inform subsequent professional practice and decision making. Accordingly, the present study explored the attitudes of Stage-1 sport psychology students through a modified form of the Maudsley Attitude Questionnaire (34 males, Mage = 24.71 years, SD = 7.23 and 42 females, Mage = 24.76 years, SD = 6.20). The questionnaire was designed to assess attitudes across eight psychological models (e.g., biological, cognitive) and four sport psychology issues (pre-performance anxiety, a lack of confidence, depression, and eating disorders). Analyses of variance demonstrated significant main, model, and interaction effects. No one psychological model was endorsed by all respondents, with model endorsement varying significantly as a function of the issue presented. Principal Axis Factoring revealed a large contribution attributable to cognitive-behavioural and ‘eclectic’ (mixed elements of social constructionism, biological, and psychodynamic) models. In contrast, the spiritual model represented low levels of participant endorsement and application. Investigation of Stage-1 students can promote an evidence-based understanding on currently developing attitudes and inform the development of sport psychology education, supervision of training routes, and subsequent professional delivery

    We develop a general convergence analysis for a class of inexact Newton-type regularizations for stably solving nonlinear ill-posed problems. Each of the methods under consideration consists of two components: the outer Newton iteration and an inner regularization scheme which, applied to the linearized system, provides the update. In this paper we give a novel and unified convergence analysis which is not confined to a specific inner regularization scheme but applies to a multitude of schemes including Landweber and steepest decent iterations, iterated Tikhonov method, and method of conjugate gradients

    Darboux Coordinates and Liouville-Arnold Integration in Loop Algebras

    Darboux coordinates are constructed on rational coadjoint orbits of the positive frequency part \wt{\frak{g}}^+ of loop algebras. These are given by the values of the spectral parameters at the divisors corresponding to eigenvector line bundles over the associated spectral curves, defined within a given matrix representation. A Liouville generating function is obtained in completely separated form and shown, through the Liouville-Arnold integration method, to lead to the Abel map linearization of all Hamiltonian flows induced by the spectral invariants. Serre duality is used to define a natural symplectic structure on the space of line bundles of suitable degree over a permissible class of spectral curves, and this is shown to be equivalent to the Kostant-Kirillov symplectic structure on rational coadjoint orbits. The general construction is given for g=gl(r)\frak{g}=\frak{gl}(r) or sl(r)\frak{sl}(r), with reductions to orbits of subalgebras determined as invariant fixed point sets under involutive automorphisms. The case g=sl(2)\frak{g=sl}(2) is shown to reproduce the classical integration methods for finite dimensional systems defined on quadrics, as well as the quasi-periodic solutions of the cubically nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. For g=sl(3)\frak{g=sl}(3), the method is applied to the computation of quasi-periodic solutions of the two component coupled nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation.Comment: 61 pg
