Gwen Bristow was born September 16, 1903. Her father was a minister and church leader and her mother was a homemaker and housemother for residents of Southern Baptist Hospital nurses\u27 home. Both had impressive genealogies. Bristow, a reporter in New Orleans for The Times-Picayune from July 9, 1925, to November 28, 1930, and February 5, 1932, to September 21, 1934, wrote for many periodicals throughout her life. Her marriage to Bruce Manning took her to Hollywood, where she lived from the summer of 1934 until late spring 1980. Bruce Manning\u27s career as a script writer, director, and producer provided a milieu Bristow enjoyed but never entered professionally except to have her novels, Tomorrow Is Forever and Jubilee Trail, made into movies. Having published one small volume of poetry, Bristow is best known for her historical novels: Deep Summer (1937), The Handsome Road (1938), and This Side of Glory (1940)--all published under one title, Gwen Bristow\u27s Plantation Trilogy (1962); Jubilee Trail (1950), Celia Garth (1959), and Calico Palace (1970). Her fourth novel, Tomorrow Is Forever (1943)--a departure from her historical novels--is set in World War II and focuses on reasons for anti-war sentiment. Her eighth, Golden Dreams (1980) is a straightforward historical sketch of the Gold Rush. An inexhaustible researcher, Bristow was admired for accuracy of historical detail in her fiction, all on national best-seller lists for months. Although not a feminist in the contemporary sense but an advocate for women\u27s rights and abilities in assertive, professional roles, she lectured and lived as a deeply concerned, aware citizen and independent thinker. Exclusive of documents she destroyed (as too revealing), her journals (1931-1978) and papers depict her marriage, work, hopes, frustrations, family, friends, attitudes, and reactions to local, national, and international affairs. As author and lecturer, she was enormously successful financially. Although some critics found her fiction sentimental and romantic, more praised it for her objective and realistic depiction of historical milieu. She wrote of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Louisiana, the nineteenth-century western movement, eighteenth-century South Carolina, and the nineteenth-century Gold Rush. A talented writer, she made a significant contribution in the genre of romantic historical fiction. She died in New Orleans August 17, 1980

A Historical Analysis Of The Social Security Program In The United States

Economic security means that sufficient provision has been made to furnish at least the basic material needs of an individual or family. Social insurance is one of the basic instruments used to combat economic insecurity. It is not easy to define economic insecurity but there are several basic factors involved. The loss of income is a factor that could lead to economic insecurity. Job separation arising from old age, accidental injury, sickness and death of the wage earner are the major forces giving rise to economic insecurity. Society has attacked the problem of economic insecurity in several ways. Regulation, alleviation, and prevention have been established as the basic methods used to approach the problems of economic security. The term social security is new in our society. Social security is a term which involves social insurance, social assistance, and related public programs. The United States was not the first country to have a social security-type program but it was not until the passage of the social. Security Act in the United States on August 14, 1935, that the term became common throughout the world. The main objective of social security is to replace part of the earnings that have stopped or reduced because the worker retires, dies, or becomes disabled. Social security is based on similar principles as private insurance, with elements to accomplish its social purpose and to keep it the least expensive. There are certain differences between commercial insurance and private insurance on the one hand and social security insurance, on the other; but the general idea is the same. Under the social security program, the whole system is operated by the federal government and some people get more benefits than others in relation to their contributions. Several services are provided through Federal grants to States under the Social Security Act

Factors affecting teachers\u27 level of technology implementation in a Texas private school

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to discover if there was a relationship between the levels of technology implementation and teachers\u27 instructional practices, personal computer use skills, and experiences in a Texas Private School. The LoTi Digital Age Survey was used to assess the current beliefs of the teachers along with additional questions regarding age, subject, experience, and years that the teacher has participated in the school\u27s current professional development program. The results of this study did not find any statistical relationships with any of the variables. However, the study did show that the teachers have made progress in using technology for higher-order tasks, but with the exception of three math, science, and technology teachers they have not reached a level that uses technology with student-centered instruction. This could be a statistical error due to the small sample size, it could indicate that pedagogy is not a relevant factor and teachers will continue to use mixed methods (Levin & Wadmany, 2006), or the self-efficacy of the teachers is such that they need specific modeling to integrate technology at a higher level (Moersch & Ondracek, 2005

To benefit those students who cannot or will not pursue their educations in traditional high schools, that is, to prevent their leaving before graduation or to facilitate their return if they do leave prematurely, educators continue to address the problem of providing alternate educational programs. This study of Outreach Schools, a current system of alternative education, was conducted through staff and student interviews, student questionnaires, school visits, and an exploration of related literature. The school philosophy is outlined, the teachers and students are described, the operation of the schools is explained, and a case is made for this type of educational alternative.

    Teachers' Secondment Experiences

This article explores seconded teachers' experiences as university instructors and faculty advisors in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia. Data were collected in three one-hour semistructured interviews with each of the 17 participants. The purpose of the study was to understand more clearly the experiences of seconded teachers in the teacher education program through the use of Glaser and Strauss's (1967) grounded theory approach. Seven phases or aspects of secondment are outlined: seeking the position; preparing for secondment; expressing self-doubts; adjusting to the tempo and workload; working with adult learners; looking for support; and returning to the school community. Overall, the themes that emerged in this research highlight five central issues: the contrast between university and school cultures; the value of reflection on practice; the strength of seconded teachers' commitment to classroom teaching; the stability and nature of seconded teachers' professional identities; and the usefulness of secondment as professional development.

    The Emeritus Teacher

Mary, Clara, and Harry are part of what they call the gray brigade. They met 6 years ago at a Retired Teachers Association meeting, warmed up to one another immediately, and began a lasting friendship. The trio has reached the emeritus phase of the Life Cycle of the Career Teacher model. They cared passionately about their profession when they were teachers, and that passion continues today. All are actively involved in helping schools improve and children succeed. Each of them goes about this quest in a very different way. Mary is a political activist well known in the halls of the state legislature. Clara, who volunteers in a fourth-grade classroom at a neighborhood school, knows how to provide underachieving students with the gift of resilience. Harry is known for achieving a 100 % success rate in mentoring teachers through the apprentice phase. All of these emeritus teachers continue to make significant contributions to the field of teaching, yet on their own terms and in their own ways
