Supporting every teacher:Using the Holistic Teacher Assessment (HTA) to measure social-emotional experiences of educators
This study aimed to extend the use of a validated assessment of social-emotional development (SED) from children and adolescents to teachers. We used correlation and regression analyses to examine the factor structure of this Holistic Teacher Assessment (HTA) and the relationships between teacher SED, self-efficacy, and burnout. Results from 284 teachers identified nine interpretable and useful SED dimensions for teachers. SED was a stronger (negative) predictor of burnout than self-efficacy, but together SED and self-efficacy accounted for more variance than either one separately. Supporting every teacher using the strengths-based HTA can inform proactive approaches, tailored to teachers’ strengths and needs.</p
EPSAT-SG: a satellite method for precipitation estimation; its concepts and implementation for the AMMA experiment
International audienceThis paper presents a new rainfall estimation method, EPSAT-SG which is a frame for method design. The first implementation has been carried out to meet the requirement of the AMMA database on a West African domain. The rainfall estimation relies on two intermediate products: a rainfall probability and a rainfall potential intensity. The first one is computed from MSG/SEVIRI by a feed forward neural network. First evaluation results show better properties than direct precipitation intensity assessment by geostationary satellite infra-red sensors. The second product can be interpreted as a conditional rainfall intensity and, in the described implementation, it is extracted from GPCP-1dd. Various implementation options are discussed and comparison of this embedded product with 3B42 estimates demonstrates the importance of properly managing the temporal discontinuity. The resulting accumulated rainfall field can be presented as a GPCP downscaling. A validation based on ground data supplied by AGRHYMET (Niamey) indicates that the estimation error has been reduced in this process. The described method could be easily adapted to other geographical area and operational environment
Drying of complex suspensions
We investigate the 3D structure and drying dynamics of complex mixtures of
emulsion droplets and colloidal particles, using confocal microscopy. Air
invades and rapidly collapses large emulsion droplets, forcing their contents
into the surrounding porous particle pack at a rate proportional to the square
of the droplet radius. By contrast, small droplets do not collapse, but remain
intact and are merely deformed. A simple model coupling the Laplace pressure to
Darcy's law correctly estimates both the threshold radius separating these two
behaviors, and the rate of large-droplet evacuation. Finally, we use these
systems to make novel hierarchical structures.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Physical mapping integrated with syntenic analysis to characterize the gene space of the long arm of wheat chromosome 1A
Background: Bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is one of the most important crops worldwide and its production faces pressing challenges, the solution of which demands genome information. However, the large, highly repetitive hexaploid wheat genome has been considered intractable to standard sequencing approaches. Therefore the International Wheat Genome Sequencing Consortium (IWGSC) proposes to map and sequence the genome on a chromosome-by-chromosome basis.
Methodology/Principal Findings: We have constructed a physical map of the long arm of bread wheat chromosome 1A using chromosome-specific BAC libraries by High Information Content Fingerprinting (HICF). Two alternative methods (FPC and LTC) were used to assemble the fingerprints into a high-resolution physical map of the chromosome arm. A total of 365 molecular markers were added to the map, in addition to 1122 putative unique transcripts that were identified by microarray hybridization. The final map consists of 1180 FPC based or 583 LTC based contigs. Conclusions/Significance: The physical map presented here marks an important step forward in mapping of hexaploid bread wheat. The map is orders of magnitude more detailed than previously available maps of this chromosome, and the assignment of over a thousand putative expressed gene sequences to specific map locations will greatly assist future functional studies. This map will be an essential tool for future sequencing of and positional cloning within chromosome 1A
