The Partnership Paperchase: Structuring Partnership Agreements in Water and Sanitation in Low-income Communities
Tripartite partnerships between water utilities, local government and civil society are often seen as a good way to deliver services to informal urban communities and slums. However, while these 'partnerships' can be seen as benign relationships, they often fail because the incentives and interests of the partners are not well aligned. In this report, the authors argue that the development of robust documentation (in forms which consitute a 'contractual' agreement) can enhance the performance of such partnerships. Aspects of the partnership which should be included in such documentation include roles and responsibilities, financing, objectives and indicators of success and dispute-resolution mechanisms. The report provides practical guidance and examples of good practice to guide the reader through a process of developing such documentation

Characteristics of a 9mm triple-beam tuning fork resonant sensor
This paper describes the design and testing of the first miniaturised metallic triple-beam tuning fork resonant sensors for use in force, pressure and torque measurement applications. The new devices with 9mm length vibrating tines have resulted in over a 40% reduction in size when compared to previously tested resonators. The four fold increase in operating frequency to 26 kHz, with Q factors in air up to 4000, provides additional benefits for resolution, accuracy, range and overload capability. Measurement repeatability of at least 0.02% of span levels for torque transducers employing the sensors are quoted. Results of characterisation over the temperature range -30oC to +90oC are given

Strain and temperature sensors using multimode optical fiber Bragg gratings and correlation signal processing
Multimode fiber optic Bragg grating sensors for
strain and temperature measurements using correlation signal processing methods have been developed. Two multimode Bragg grating sensors were fabricated in 62/125 m graded-index silica
multimode fiber; the first sensor was produced by the holographic method and the second sensor by the phase mask technique. The sensors have signal reflectivity of approximately 35% at peak
wavelengths of 835 nm and 859 nm, respectively.
Strain testing of both sensors has been done from 0 to 1000 με and the temperature testing from 40 to 80°C. Strain and temperature sensitivity values are 0.55 pm/με and 6 pm/°C, respectively.
The sensors are being applied in a power-by-light hydraulic valve monitoring system
Renormalization Constants of Quark Operators for the Non-Perturbatively Improved Wilson Action
We present the results of an extensive lattice calculation of the
renormalization constants of bilinear and four-quark operators for the
non-perturbatively O(a)-improved Wilson action. The results are obtained in the
quenched approximation at four values of the lattice coupling by using the
non-perturbative RI/MOM renormalization method. Several sources of systematic
uncertainties, including discretization errors and final volume effects, are
examined. The contribution of the Goldstone pole, which in some cases may
affect the extrapolation of the renormalization constants to the chiral limit,
is non-perturbatively subtracted. The scale independent renormalization
constants of bilinear quark operators have been also computed by using the
lattice chiral Ward identities approach and compared with those obtained with
the RI-MOM method. For those renormalization constants the non-perturbative
estimates of which have been already presented in the literature we find an
agreement which is typically at the level of 1%.Comment: 36 pages, 13 figures. Minor changes in the text and in one figure.

Lack of Cry1Fa binding to the midgut brush border membrane in a resistant colony of Plutella xylostella moths with a mutaton in the ABCC2 locus
Previous studies reported "mode 1" Bacillus thuringiensis resistance in a colony of diamondback moths (NO-QA), and recently, this resistance has been mapped to an ABC transporter (ABCC2) locus.
