    Out of equilibrium quantum field dynamics of an initial thermal state after a change in the external field

    The effects of the initial temperature in the out of equilibrium quantum field dynamics in the presence of an homogeneous external field are investigated. We consider an initial thermal state of temperature T for a constant external field J. A subsequent sign flip of the external field, J to -J, gives rise to an out of equilibrium nonperturbative quantum field dynamics. The dynamics is studied here for the symmetry broken lambda(Phi^2)^2 scalar N component field theory in the large N limit. We find a dynamical effective potential for the expectation value that helps to understand the dynamics. The dynamics presents two regimes defined by the presence or absence of a temporal trapping close to the metastable equilibrium position of the potential. The two regimes are separated by a critical value of the external field that depends on the initial temperature. The temporal trapping is shorter for larger initial temperatures or larger external fields. Parametric resonances and spinodal instabilities amplify the quantum fluctuations in the field components transverse to the external field. When there is a temporal trapping this is the main mechanism that allows the system to escape from the metastable state for large N. Subsequently backreaction stops the growth of the quantum fluctuations and the system enters a quasiperiodic regime.Comment: LaTeX, 19 pages, 12 .eps figures, improved version to appear in Phys Rev

    Solvable senescence model with positive mutations

    We build upon our previous analytical results for the Penna model of senescence to include positive mutations. We investigate whether a small but non-zero positive mutation rate gives qualitatively different results to the traditional Penna model in which no positive mutations are considered. We find that the high-lifespan tail of the distribution is radically changed in structure, but that there is not much effect on the bulk of the population. Th e mortality plateau that we found previously for a stochastic generalization of the Penna model is stable to a small positive mutation rate.Comment: 3 figure

    Program representation size in an intermediate language with intersection and union types

    The CIL compiler for core Standard ML compiles whole programs using a novel typed intermediate language (TIL) with intersection and union types and flow labels on both terms and types. The CIL term representation duplicates portions of the program where intersection types are introduced and union types are eliminated. This duplication makes it easier to represent type information and to introduce customized data representations. However, duplication incurs compile-time space costs that are potentially much greater than are incurred in TILs employing type-level abstraction or quantification. In this paper, we present empirical data on the compile-time space costs of using CIL as an intermediate language. The data shows that these costs can be made tractable by using sufficiently fine-grained flow analyses together with standard hash-consing techniques.     Jet quenching and broadening: the transport coefficient q^\hat{q} in an anisotropic plasma

    The jet quenching parameter q^\hat{q} is analyzed for a quark jet propagating in an anisotropic plasma. The momentum anisotropy is calculated at high temperature of the underlying quark-gluon plasma. q^\hat{q} is explicitly estimated in leading-logarithmic approximation by the broadening of the massless quark interacting via gluon exchange. A plasma instability is present. Strong indications are found that q^\hat{q} is increasing with increasing anisotropy. Possible implications for the saturation scale QsQ_s in A−AA-A collisions are pointed out.Comment: 1
