Configurations of Extremal Even Unimodular Lattices
We extend the results of Ozeki on the configurations of extremal even
unimodular lattices. Specifically, we show that if L is such a lattice of rank

Summer Workshop on Near-Earth Resources
The possible large scale use of extraterrestrial resources was addressed, either to construct structures in space or to return to Earth as supplements for terrestrial resources. To that end, various specific recommendations were made by the participants in the summer study on near-Earth resources, held at La Jolla, California, 6 to 13 August, 1977. The Moon and Earth-approaching asteroids were considered. Summaries are included of what is known about their compositions and what needs to be learned, along with recommendations for missions designed to provide the needed data. Tentative schedules for these projects are also offered
Responses of Hyalella azteca and Ceridaphnia dubia to reservoir sediments following Chelated Copper Herbicide Applications
In response to nuisance growths of algae and vascular
plants, such as dioecious hydrilla (
Hydrilla verticillata
L.f.
Royle), copper formulations have been applied in lakes and
reservoirs for a number of years. Concerns have arisen regarding
the long-term consequences of copper applications
and those concerns have appropriately focused on sediment
residues. In this study, we evaluated the toxicity of sediments
from treated (for a decade) and untreated areas in Lake
Murray, South Carolina and estimated the capacity of those
sediments to bind additional copper. Two sentinel aquatic invertebrates,
Hyalella azteca
Saussure and
Ceriodaphnia dubia
Richard, were used to measure residual toxicity of treated
and untreated sediments from the field and after laboratory

Systematic Variation in Willingness to Pay for Agricultural Land Preservation and Implications for Benefit Transfer: A Meta-Analysis
Despite prior studies examining willingness to pay for farmland preservation there has been no quantitative, systematic analysis of findings across the literature. This paper presents the first statistical meta-analysis of farmland preservation values. Results confirm systematic variations in willingness to pay, with value surfaces corresponding to theoretical expectations. Findings also provide significant insight into the potential for valid meta-analytic, function based benefit transfer. Results suggest, for example, that transfer validity is critically dependent on jurisdictional scale. Transfer errors are modest for community scale farmland preservation, but large for state scale preservation policies in which per acre welfare estimates are small.Land Economics/Use,
Surface nano-patterning through styrene adsorption on Si(100)
We present an ab initio study of the structural and electronic properties of
styrene molecules adsorbed on the dimerized Si(100) surface at different
coverages, ranging from the single-molecule to the full monolayer. The
adsorption mechanism primarily involves the vinyl group via a [2+2]
cycloaddition process that leads to the formation of covalent Si-C bonds and a
local surface derelaxation, while it leaves the phenyl group almost
unperturbed. The investigation of the functionalized surface as a function of
the coverage (e.g. 0.5 -- 1 ML) and of the substrate reconstruction reveals two
major effects. The first results from Si dimer-vinyl interaction and concerns
the controlled variation of the energy bandgap of the interface. The second is
associated to phenyl-phenyl interactions, which gives rise to a regular pattern
of electronic wires at surface, stemming from the pi-pi coupling. These
findings suggest a rationale for tailoring the surface nano-patterning of the

Currents, Torques, and Polarization Factors in Magnetic Tunnel Junctions
Application of Bardeen's tunneling theory to magnetic tunnel junctions having
a general degree of atomic disorder reveals the close relationship between
magneto-conduction and voltage-driven pseudo-torque, as well as the thickness
dependence of tunnel-polarization factors. Among the results: 1) The torque
generally varies as sin theta at constant applied voltage. 2) Whenever
polarization factors are well defined, the voltage-driven torque on each moment
is uniquely proportional to the polarization factor of the other magnet. 3) At
finite applied voltage, this relation predicts significant voltage-asymmetry in
the torque. For one sign of voltage the torque remains substantial even when
the magnetoconductance is greatly diminished. 4) A broadly defined junction
model, called ideal middle, allows for atomic disorder within the magnets and
F/I interface regions. In this model, the spin dependence of a state-weighting
factor proportional to the sum over general state index of evaluated within the
(e.g. vacuum) barrier generalizes the local state density in previous theories
of the tunnel-polarization factor. 5) For small applied voltage,
tunnel-polarization factors remain legitimate up to first order in the inverse
thickness of the ideal middle. An algebraic formula describes the first-order
corrections to polarization factors in terms of newly defined lateral

Time scale of entropic segregation of flexible polymers in confinement: Implications for chromosome segregation in filamentous bacteria
We report molecular dynamics simulations of the segregation of two
overlapping chains in cylindrical confinement. We find that the entropic
repulsion between the chains can be sufficiently strong to cause segregation on
a time scale that is short compared to the one for diffusion. This result
implies that entropic driving forces are sufficiently strong to cause rapid

Object orientation without extending Z
The good news of this paper is that without extending Z,
we can elegantly specify object-oriented systems, including encapsulation,
inheritance and subtype polymorphism (dynamic dispatch). The
bad news is that this specification style is rather different to normal
Z specifications, more abstract and axiomatic, which means that it is
not so well supported by current Z tools such as animators. It also enforces
behavioural subtyping, unlike most object-oriented programming
languages. This paper explains the proposed style, with examples, and
discusses its advantages and disadvantages
Thermionic emission perpendicular to bulk and multiquantum AlxGa1-xInP barriers
A study on thermally activated currents across the bulk and multiquantum barrier (MQB) AlxGa1-xInP/GaInP has been carried out and compared to experimental results from a series of n-i-n diodes over a range of temperatures. By considering the true quantum mechanical nature of the barriers, in contrast to the classical Richardson formalism, it is found that the alloy crossover strongly affects the transport properties of the material. The measured prefactor is found to decrease as Al content is increased. When applied to the MQB structures, the existing model fails to capture the experimental results. Gel-Electrophoresis and Diffusion of Ring-Shaped DNA
A model for the motion of ring-shaped DNA in a gel is introduced and studied
by numerical simulations and a mean-field approximation. The ring motion is
mediated by finger-shaped loops (hernias) that move in an amoeba-like fashion
around the gel obstructions. This constitutes an extension of previous
reptation tube treatments. It is shown that tension is essential for describing
the dynamics in the presence of hernias. It is included in the model as long
range interactions over stretched DNA regions. The mobility of ring-shaped DNA
is found to saturate much as in the well-studied case of linear DNA.
Experiments in polymer gels, however, show that the mobility drops
exponentially with the DNA ring size. This is commonly attributed to
dangling-ends in the gel that can impale the ring. The predictions of the
present model are expected to apply to artificial 2D obstacle arrays (W.D.
Volkmuth, R.H. Austin, Nature 358,600 (1992)) which have no dangling-ends. In
the zero-field case an exact solution of the model steady-state is obtained,
and quantities such as the average ring size are calculated. An approximate
treatment of the ring dynamics is given, and the diffusion coefficient is
derived. The model is also discussed in the context of spontaneous symmetry
