    Background and Aims The application of deficit irrigation to grapevines modifies the hormonal status of berries, but little information about the influence of berry hormones on phenological sensitivity to water deficit is available. Therefore, the aim of this research was to assess the involvement of berry hormonal status in fruit composition in response to regulated deficit irrigation applied during different phenological stages in two grapevine cultivars. Methods and Results The study was carried out on fruiting cuttings of two cultivars of Vitis vinifera L., Tempranillo and Graciano. Treatments were: (i) early water deficit from fruitset to onset of veraison (early deficit); (ii) late water deficit from onset of veraison to harvest (late deficit); and (iii) plants regularly irrigated (Control). Both early water deficit and late water-deficit strategies modified evolution of indole-3-acetic acid, abscisic acid, salicylic acid and jasmonic acid, which was related to changes in berry size, increases in phenolic substances and accumulation of amines. Conclusions Differential sensitivity of Tempranillo and Graciano grapevines to seasonal water stress was mediated, at least in part, by alterations in hormonal status of berries at the time of water stress imposition.     Geoscientific maps for planning in semi-arid regions: Valencia and Gran Canaria, Spain

    Two case studies of the application of geoscientific maps for planning in semi-arid regions are presented, one for the Mediterranean province of Valencia and another for the island of Gran Canaria (Canaries). Both regions are very dynamic from the point of view of population growth and urban-touristic-industrial development, and they suffer from a serious degree of environmental degradation. The provincial/ island governments have undertaken programmes of geoscientific mapping and assessment to serve as a basis for the establishment of guidelines for future planning. Two map sets have been made (1:200,000 in Valencia and 1:50,000 in Gran Canaria), based on initial maps of homogeneous integrated units. These represent a series of hierarchical land subdivisions, progressively smaller and more detailed (morphodynamic environments, systems, units, elements), defined on the basis of morphostructure, climate, lithology, surficial deposits, landforms, topography, active processes, soils, vegetation and human influence. Each individual map unit is described by means of a form which includes 114 items, summarising its environmental features. Morphodynamic units have been evaluated in terms of qualities significant for planning, and a series of derivative maps has been developed (geologic hazards, soil capability, present degree of erosion, potential erodibility, quality for conservation). A final map shows the most advisable types of uses and the main limitations for human activities, mainly due to engineering geological factors. This is a synthesis document which can be used directly by planners

    Supplementary Material for: Abnormal Chemokine Receptor Profile on Circulating T Lymphocytes from Nonallergic Asthma Patients

    <b><i>Background:</i></b> T lymphocytes are involved in the pathogenesis of nonallergic asthma. The objective of this study was to characterize the subset distribution and pattern of chemokine receptor expression in circulating T lymphocyte subsets from nonallergic asthma patients. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> Forty stable nonallergic asthma patients and 16 sex- and age-matched healthy donors were studied. Twelve patients did not receive inhaled steroids (untreated patients), 16 received 50-500 μg b.i.d. of inhaled fluticasone propionate (FP) (standard-dose patients), and 12 received over 500 μg b.i.d. of inhaled FP (high-dose patients) for at least 12 months prior to the beginning of this study and were clinically well controlled. Flow cytometry was performed using a panel of monoclonal antibodies (4 colors). <b><i>Results:</i></b> Nonallergic asthma patients treated with high doses of inhaled FP showed a significant reduction in the percentages of CD3+ T lymphocytes compared to healthy controls. Untreated patients showed a significant increase in CCR6 expression in CD8+CD25+ and CD8+CD25+bright T cells compared to healthy controls. The results were similar for CXCR3 and CCR5 expression. In patients treated with standard doses of FP, CCR5 expression was significantly increased in CD3+ T lymphocytes relative to healthy controls. <b><i>Conclusions:</i></b> The different groups of clinically stable nonallergic asthmatic patients showed distinct patterns of alterations in subset distribution as well as CCR6, CXCR3, and CCR5 expression on circulating T lymphocytes

    International survey on skin patch test procedures, attitudes and interpretation

    Background Skin patch test is the gold standard method in diagnosing contact allergy. Although used for more than 100 years, the patch test procedure is performed with variability around the world. A number of factors can influence the test results, namely the quality of reagents used, the timing of the application, the patch test series (allergens/haptens) that have been used for testing, the appropriate interpretation of the skin reactions or the evaluation of the patient’s benefit.Methods We performed an Internet –based survey with 38 questions covering the educational background of respondents, patch test methods and interpretation. The questionnaire was distributed among all representatives of national member societies of the World Allergy Organization (WAO), and the WAO Junior Members Group.Results One hundred sixty-nine completed surveys were received from 47 countries. The majority of participants had more than 5 years of clinical practice (61 %) and routinely carried out patch tests (70 %). Both allergists and dermatologists were responsible for carrying out the patch tests. We could observe the use of many different guidelines regardless the geographical distribution. The use of home-made preparations was indicated by 47 % of participants and 73 % of the respondents performed 2 or 3 readings. Most of the responders indicated having patients with adverse reactions, including erythroderma (12 %); however, only 30 % of members completed a consent form before conducting the patch test.Discussion The heterogeneity of patch test practices may be influenced by the level of awareness of clinical guidelines, different training backgrounds, accessibility to various types of devices, the patch test series (allergens/haptens) used for testing, type of clinical practice (public or private practice, clinical or research-based institution), infrastructure availability, financial/commercial implications and regulations among others.Conclusion There is a lack of a worldwide homogeneity of patch test procedures, and this raises concerns about the need for standardization and harmonization of this important diagnostic procedure.
