    In many marine ecosystems small pelagic fish exert a crucial role in controlling the dynamics of the community, mainly due to their high biomass at intermediate levels of the food web. These fish use coastal marine ecosystems as nursery areas, but also to forage and to avoid predation or competition. We studied spatial, seasonal, lunar and diel variations in a coastal fish community from a marine protected area of the Bijagós Archipelago, Guinea-Bissau. Fish were sampled with 46 beach seine net sessions in 2015 and 2016. A total of 35 fish species of 25 families were captured. Fish abundance varied between years and seasons, with a higher abundance in the dry season, but not by lunar tide. Nonetheless, the community composition was broadly similar over the seasons, among islands and between lunar tides. Clupeidae, Haemulidae and Gerreidae were the most abundant fish families. Sardinella maderensis highly dominated the captures throughout the year, with catches much higher than any other species. The differences in abundance between seasons and years may be related with movements to or from the shore due to feeding activity or to avoid predation, or else to differences in recruitment between years. There were no significant diel differences in species richness and diversity, although higher numbers of fish were captured during daytime. For most species the majority of individuals captured were immature, highlighting the importance of the archipelago as nursery area for several species. These small pelagics, and particularly Sardinella maderensis, represent the main prey for several marine predators.     Unveiling the complexity of transcription factor networks in hematopoietic stem cells: implications for cell therapy and hematological malignancies

    The functionality and longevity of hematopoietic tissue is ensured by a tightly controlled balance between self-renewal, quiescence, and differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) into the many different blood lineages. Cell fate determination in HSCs is influenced by signals from extrinsic factors (e.g., cytokines, irradiation, reactive oxygen species, O2 concentration) that are translated and integrated by intrinsic factors such as Transcription Factors (TFs) to establish specific gene regulatory programs. TFs also play a central role in the establishment and/or maintenance of hematological malignancies, highlighting the need to understand their functions in multiple contexts. TFs bind to specific DNA sequences and interact with each other to form transcriptional complexes that directly or indirectly control the expression of multiple genes. Over the past decades, significant research efforts have unraveled molecular programs that control HSC function. This, in turn, led to the identification of more than 50 TF proteins that influence HSC fate. However, much remains to be learned about how these proteins interact to form molecular networks in combination with cofactors (e.g. epigenetics factors) and how they control differentiation, expansion, and maintenance of cellular identity. Understanding these processes is critical for future applications particularly in the field of cell therapy, as this would allow for manipulation of cell fate and induction of expansion, differentiation, or reprogramming of HSCs using specific cocktails of TFs. Here, we review recent findings that have unraveled the complexity of molecular networks controlled by TFs in HSCs and point towards possible applications to obtain functional HSCs ex vivo for therapeutic purposes including hematological malignancies. Furthermore, we discuss the challenges and prospects for the derivation and expansion of functional adult HSCs in the near future

    Some bacterial and viral DNA sequences have been found to induce low frequency electromagnetic waves in high aqueous dilutions. This phenomenon appears to be triggered by the ambient electromagnetic background of very low frequency. We discuss this phenomenon in the framework of quantum field theory. A scheme able to account for the observations is proposed.     Impact of increasing levels of adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction on image quality in oil-based postmortem CT angiography in coronary arteries.

    Postmortem multi-detector computed tomography (PMCT) has become an important part in forensic imaging. Modern reconstruction techniques such as iterative reconstruction (IR) are frequently used in postmortem CT angiography (PMCTA). The image quality of PMCTA depends on the strength of IR. For this purpose, we aimed to investigate the impact of different advanced IR levels on the objective and subjective PMCTA image quality. We retrospectively analyzed the coronary arteries of 27 human cadavers undergoing whole-body postmortem CT angiography between July 2017 and March 2018 in a single center. Iterative reconstructions of the coronary arteries were processed in five different level settings (0%; 30%; 50%; 70%; 100%) by using an adaptive statistical IR method. We evaluated the objective (contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR)) and subjective image quality in several anatomical locations. Our results demonstrate that the increasing levels of an IR technique have relevant impact on the image quality in PMCTA scans in forensic postmortem examinations. Higher levels of IR have led to a significant reduction of image noise and therefore to a significant improvement of objective image quality (+ 70%). However, subjective image quality is inferior at higher levels of IR due to plasticized image appearance. Objective image quality in PMCTA progressively improves with increasing level of IR with the best CNR at the highest IR level. However, subjective image quality is best at low to medium levels of IR. To obtain a "classic" image appearance with optimal image quality, PMCTAs should be reconstructed at medium levels of IR

    Les tumeurs rhabdoïdes tératoïdes atypiques du système nerveux central sont des tumeurs pédiatriques rares et de mauvais pronostic. La littérature rapporte une dizaine de cas chez l'adulte dont deux survenus au cours d'une grossesse. Nous rapportons dans ce travail, le cas d'une femme de 25 ans, enceinte de 14 semaines d'aménorrhée, qui a été opérée pour une tumeur rhabdoïde tératoïde atypique de la fosse cérébrale postérieure. Un  complément thérapeutique a été discuté chez la patiente après interruption thérapeutique de grossesse, mais la patiente fut décédée avant de démarrer le traitement adjuvant. Nous décrivons brièvement les caractéristiques des tumeurs rhabdoïdes, et les particularités de sa prise en charge chez l'adulte

    This article focuses on the risks associated with Hazardous Materials Transportation (HazMaT) events in the French chemical industry between 1981 and 2022. The study aims to analyze and assess the causes and consequences of past events using the ARIA database, which lists over 54,000 events that have taken place in France and abroad. The severity of events is classified into five categories, from near misses to catastrophic events. The study highlights the importance of risk analysis/assessment and lessons learned from past events in managing natural and technological risks

    Industrial fishing near West African Marine Protected Areas and its potential effects on mobile marine predators

    Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are increasingly implemented to facilitate the conservation of marine biodiversity and key-habitats. However, these areas are often less effective to conserve mobile marine species like elasmobranchs (i.e. sharks and rays). Industrial fishing near MPA borders possibly impacts vulnerable species utilizing these protected areas. Hence, we aimed to study spatiotemporal patterns of industrial fisheries near MPAs, in relation to the bycatch of elasmobranchs. Specifically, we analyzed the spatiotemporal fishing effort within the West African region, mapped fishing effort in the direct vicinity of the Parc National du Banc d’Arguin (Mauritania) and the Bijagós Archipelago (Guinea Bissau) and compared the seasonal overlap between elasmobranch bycatch and fishing effort near these MPAs. We combined Automatic Identification System data and local fisheries observer data, and determined fishing effort for each gear type and compared this with bycatch of elasmobranchs. We found that industrial fishing effort was dominated by trawling, drifting longlines and fixed gear types. Although no industrial fishing was observed within both MPAs, 72% and 78% of the buffer zones surrounding the MPAs were fished for the Banc d’Arguin and Bijagós respectively. Within the Banc d’Arguin buffer zone, trawling and drifting longlines dominated, with longlines mainly being deployed in fall. In the Bijagós buffer zone, trawling and fixed gears were most prevalent. Fisheries observer data for Mauritania showed that elasmobranch catches increased during the most recent sampling years (2016 to 2018). Elasmobranch catches within the waters of Guinea Bissau peaked in 2016 and decreased in the following two years. Seasonal patterns in elasmobranch bycatch within the waters of both countries are likely caused by increased catches of migratory species. Catches of rays peaked in May and June for Mauritania, and in October for Guinea Bissau. Shark catches were highest in February and July in Mauritanian waters, and in May and October in the waters of Guinea Bissau. Our study indicates that industrial fisheries near the border of ecologically important MPAs may have potentially major implications for ecosystem functioning by the removal of (migratory) predatory species

    High-isolation antenna array using SIW and realized with a graphene layer for sub-terahertz wireless applications

    This paper presents the results of a study on developing an effective technique to increase the performance characteristics of antenna arrays for sub-THz integrated circuit applications. This is essential to compensate the limited power available from sub-THz sources. Although conventional array structures can provide a solution to enhance the radiation-gain performance however in the case of small-sized array structures the radiation properties can be adversely affected by mutual coupling that exists between the radiating elements. It is demonstrated here the effectiveness of using SIW technology to suppress surface wave propagations and near field mutual coupling effects. Prototype of 2x3 antenna arrays were designed and constructed on a polyimide dielectric substrate with thickness of 125 mu m for operation across 0.19-0.20 THz. The dimensions of the array were 20x13.5x0.125 mm(3). Metallization of the antenna was coated with 500 nm layer of Graphene. With the proposed technique the isolation between the radiating elements was improved on average by 22.5 dB compared to a reference array antenna with no SIW isolation. The performance of the array was enhanced by transforming the patch to exhibit metamaterial characteristics. This was achieved by embedding the patch antennas in the array with sub-wavelength slots. Compared to the reference array the metamaterial inspired structure exhibits improvement in isolation, radiation gain and efficiency on average by 28 dB, 6.3 dBi, and 34%, respectively. These results show the viability of proposed approach in developing antenna arrays for application in sub-THz integrated circuits
