Promotion of co-operative research: a Spanish experience

The aim of this paper is to assess the success of the Spanish technology policy instrument ‘proyectos concertados’ (co-operative projects which receive public financing) in the stimulation of co-operation between firms and public research centres (PRCs). The paper analyses the factors which explain the different impact of this aid in relation to: a) whether or not the public intervention has contributed to getting a project carried out co-operatively which would otherwise have been carried out by the firm alone; b) whether or not the firms which have carried out proyectos concertados intend to continue to co-operate with the participant PRCs. The information used corresponds to the opinion of the firm which undertakes the proyecto concertado.Publicad

En este artículo se estudia la participación de las empresas españolas que realizan actividades de investigación en los proyectos concertados, un instrumento de política tecnológica que promueve la investigación en cooperación con universidades y organismos públicos de investigación. Se realiza un análisis de correspondencias múltiples que permite caracterizar a las empresas que participan en dichos proyectos y se detecta que los principales factores que favorecen la participación son la vocación investigadora de la empresa, la capacidad de su departamento de I+D y el interés de la empresa por las ayudas públicas. Una clasificación de las empresas pone de manifiesto que las más grandes así como las más pequeñas se dividen entre participar en los proyectos concertados o no hacerlo, pero que existe un colectivo de tamaño intermedio que no participan.Publicad

Public financing of cooperative R&D projects in Spain: the Concerted Projects under the National R&D Plan

This work will analyse the factors which influence decision-making within the Spanish public sector on the financing of precompetitive research projects developed by firms in collaboration with universities and public research organisms. With this objective in mind, an econometric model is proposed that explains simultaneously the concession of aid on behalf of the public sector and the amount of such aid. The estimates carried out indicate, among other results, that the destination of the budgeted funds explains a large part of the public financing received. However, all the evidence would seem to indicate that the funding has not been awarded either in order to significantly favour those firms which most need it, nor to give incentive to high levels of cooperation.We are grateful to Victor Cano, Praveen Kujal, Stan Metcalfe, Manuel Navarro, Maria del Pilar Osorno, Olga Rodriguez and three anonymous referees for useful comments and suggestions. Evidencias de deslizamientos submarinos al sur de la isla de Mallorca

In this paper we presente evidence from submarine slides locate south of Mallorca Island. This study is based on the bathymetric map obtained by the multi beam echosounders SIM RAD EM I000 and EM I2, together with the analysis of several seismic reflection profiles of high resolution logging with the SPARKER system mod. 267. Each method generated a specific data set. Both bathymetric and seismic data set are complementary one to another. Two main fault lineations have been identified; NE-SW (Betic) and NW-SE. The detailed analysis of the bathymetric map based on multibeam echosounder data, in the Emile Baudot seamount area, allowed us to detect and characterize more than 118 edifices. It could be observed two structural directions: one NE-SW corresponding to the Emile Baudot escarpment transform fault and the conjugate direction NW-SE that correspond to a distensive area that probably connects this zone with the Valencia Trough
