Electronic and Structural Properties of Janus SMoSe/MoX (X=S,Se) In-plane Heterojunctions: A DFT Study
The electronic and structural properties of Janus MoSSe/MoX (X=S,Se)
in-plane heterojunctions, endowed with single-atom vacancies, were studied
using density functional theory calculations. The stability of these structures
was verified from cohesion energy calculations. Results showed that single-atom
vacancies induce the appearance of flat midgap states, and a substantial amount
of charge is localized in the vicinity of these defects. As a consequence,
these heterojunctions presented an intrinsic dipole moment. No bond
reconstructions were noted by removing an atom from the lattice, regardless of
its chemical species. Our calculations predicted indirect electronic bandgap
values between 1.6-1.7 eV.Comment: 10 pages, 5 Figure
On the Electronic Structure of a Recently Synthesized Graphene-like BCN Monolayer from bis-BN Cyclohexane: A DFT Study
Since the rising of graphene, boron nitride monolayers have been deeply
studied due to their structural similarity with the former. A hexagonal
graphene-like boron-carbon-nitrogen (h-BCN) monolayer was synthesized recently
using bis-BN cyclohexane (B2N2C2H12) as a precursor molecule. Herein, we
investigated the electronic and structural properties of this novel BCN
material, in the presence of single-atom (boron, carbon, or nitrogen)
vacancies, by employing density functional theory calculations. The stability
of these vacancy-endowed structures is verified from cohesion energy
calculations. Results showed that a carbon atom vacancy strongly distorts the
lattice leading to breaking on its planarity and bond reconstructions. The
single-atom vacancies induce the appearance of flat midgap states. A
significant degree of charge localization takes place in the vicinity of these
defects. It was observed a spontaneous magnetization only for the boron-vacancy
case, with a magnetic dipole moment about 0.87 mu_B. Our calculations predicted
a direct electronic bandgap value of about 1.14 eV, which is in good agreement
with the experimental one. Importantly, this bandgap value is intermediate
between gapless graphene and insulating h-BN.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
Recommendations of Neuroendocrinology Department from Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism for diagnosis and treatment of acromegaly in Brazil
A acromegalia é uma doença associada à elevada morbidade e à redução da expectativa de vida. Em virtude do seu caráter insidioso e do seu não reconhecimento, o diagnóstico é frequentemente realizado com atraso, o que, associado à s complicações relacionadas ao excesso do GH/IGF-I, determina elevada morbimortalidade. No entanto, um diagnóstico precoce e um tratamento efetivo minimizam a morbidade e normalizam a taxa de mortalidade. Nesta publicação, o objetivo do Departamento de Neuroendocrinologia da Sociedade Brasileira de Endocrinologia e Metabologia é divulgar quando suspeitar clinicamente da acromegalia e como diagnosticá-la. Além disso, discute-se a maneira mais eficaz e segura de realizar o tratamento da acromegalia, enfatizando que este deve ser realizado em centros de referência. Assim, com base em dados publicados em periódicos de nÃvel cientÃfico reconhecido e na experiência dos autores, são apresentadas as recomendações para o diagnóstico e tratamento da doença.Acromegaly is a disease associated with increased morbidity and reduced life expectancy. Because of its insidious character and its non-recognition, the diagnosis is often made with delay, which, along with the complications related to GH/IGF-I excess, determines high morbidity and mortality. However, an early diagnosis and an effective treatment reduce the morbidity and normalize the mortality rate. In this publication, the goal of Neuroendocrinology Department from Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism is to disclose which clinical set should arouse the suspicious of acromegaly and how to diagnose it. Furthermore, we discuss the most effective and safe approach to perform the treatment of acromegaly, emphasizing that it must be carried out in reference centers. Therefore, based on data published in journals with recognized scientific level and authors' experience, recommendations are presented for diagnosis and treatment of the disease

Alimentação popular em São Paulo (1920 a 1950): polÃticas públicas, discursos técnicos e práticas profissionais
This article discusses how the concept of lower-class eating habits came about and developed in the intellectual circles of São Paulo during the first half of the 20th century. It starts by reconstructing the elements of the debate around the income and ignorance of the underprivileged as the main reasons behind their bad eating habits. Then, it looks at the focal points for interventions and public policies proposed by the government to deal with the problem thus identified, namely: training methods to produce sanitation counselors capable of offering dietary guidance as well; popular educational campaigns and new learning sites in addition to schools (e.g. healthcare centers and households); lunch and other means of offering food at schools; and diagnostic studies about food intake and eating habits among laborers. Because they were translated into technical and scientific language, the proposals and policies implemented in São Paulo left traces in a variety of supporting documents and media (photographs, primers, posters, inquiry notebooks, and academic literature).O artigo discute a construção da idéia de alimentação popular nos meios intelectuais em São Paulo, na primeira metade do século XX. Para isso, reconstitui, como motivos da má alimentação, elementos do debate em torno da renda e da ignorância dos mais pobres. Identificado o problema, as propostas de intervenção e as polÃticas públicas concentraram-se em alguns setores, abordados neste trabalho: métodos para a formação de educadores sanitários aptos a atuar também na educação alimentar; campanhas de instrução popular e criação de novos lugares de aprendizado (além das escolas, os centros de saúde e os lares); merenda escolar e outras alternativas de alimentação nas escolas; e diagnósticos referentes ao conteúdo e à forma da alimentação dos operários.
