    Specialization and optimization of constraint programs with dynamic scheduling

    In this report we discuss some of the issues involved in the specialization and optimization of constraint logic programs with dynamic scheduling. Dynamic scheduling, as any other form of concurrency, increases the expressive power of constraint logic programs, but also introduces run-time overhead. The objective of the specialization and optimization is to reduce as much as possible such overhead automatically, while preserving the semantics of the original programs. This is done by program transformation based on global analysis. We present implementation techniques for this purpose and report on experimental results obtained from an implementation of the techniques in the context of the CIAO compiler

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Oligoclonal IgG bands in cerebrospinal fluid that are absent in serum indicate intrathecal IgG synthesis and are a sensitive marker of CNS inflammatory diseases, in particular multiple sclerosis. It may be of interest to determine whether these bands are predominantly IgGκ or IgGλ.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We have used Hevylite™ antibodies and developed a technique for detection of oligoclonal IgGκ and IgGλ bands by means of isoelectric focusing followed by immunoblotting. The same technique was used for oligoclonal free κ and free λ detection. Among several techniques tested, affinity immunoblotting appears to be the most sensitive; it can detect less than 1 ng of IgGκ or IgGλ paraprotein. We compared oligoclonal IgG profiles with those of oligoclonal IgGκ and IgGλ. There was good agreement concerning the presence or absence of intrathecal synthesis. We observed the ratios between oligoclonal IgGκ and IgGλ bands, and they did not always match the ratios between free κ and free λ bands. We were also able to detect antigen-specific CSF-restricted oligoclonal IgGκ and IgGλ bands in neuroborreliosis. It remains to be determined subsequently by a clinically-oriented prospective study, whether predominant IgGκ/IgGλ or free κ/free λ can be observed more frequently in particular diseases with oligoclonal IgG synthesis.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>Very sensitive detection of oligoclonal IgGκ and IgGλ bands in cerebrospinal fluid with Hevylite antibodies is feasible; detection of antigen-specific IgGκ or IgGλ is possible as well. In particular situations, e.g. when difficulties arise in distinguishing between oligoclonal and monoclonal pattern, the test may be of considerable clinical value.</p

    European livestock agriculture is extraordinarily diverse, and so are the challenges it faces. This diversity has contributed to the development of a fragmented set of research communities. As a result, livestock research is often under-represented at policy level, despite its high relevance for the environment and food security.Understanding livestock systems and how they can sustainably adapt to global change requires inputs across research areas, including grasslands, nutrition, health, welfare and ecology. It also requires experimental researchers, modellers and stakeholders to work closely together.Networks and capacity building structures are vital to enable livestock research to meet the challenges of climate change. They need to maintain shared resources and provide non-competitive arenas to share and synthesize results for policy support.  Long term strategic investment is needed to support such structures. Their leadership requires very different skills to those effective in scientific project coordination

    National audienceHypersensitivity Pneumonitis (HP) is a common immune-mediated interstitial lung disease (ILD) induced by repeated exposure to environmental antigens in susceptible individuals. The most commonly known forms are bird fancier’s disease and farmer’s lung. However, the antigens involved are widely diverse. Therefore, the list of causes of HP is frequently expanding. HP seems to be under-diagnosed owing to its highly heterogeneous presentation in both the non-fibrotic and fibrotic subtypes and could represent up to 15% of all ILDs encountered in clinical practice. However, the recognition of HP cases is essential to ensure appropriate therapy for the patient. Home health care workers’ intervention is sometimes critical in this context. In case of confirmed exposure, the diagnosis could be considered with high confidence if the high-resolution computed tomography (HR-CT) shows a typical HP pattern associated with a lymphocytosis over 30% in the broncho-alveolar lavage (BAL). In all other situations, the patients should undergo further investigations and additional histopathological sampling should be considered and submitted to a multidisciplinary team discussion. After diagnosis, antigenic eviction is the rule whenever possible. Corticosteroid treatment is the first-line medical treatment for severe forms and aims to prevent the development of fibrosis. Anti-fibrotic therapy is now an option for patients with progressive ILD and failure of immunomodulatory/immunosuppressive therapies
