    A Cr(VI) selective probe based on a quinoline-amide calix[4]arene

A new quinoline-amide calix[4]arene 3-receptor for detection of hazardous anions and cations have been synthesized. The 3-receptor was examined for its sensing properties towards several different anions (Cr2O72-, SCN-, F-, Cl-, N-3(-)) and metal ions (Hg2+, Cd2+, Ag+) by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies. It was detected that the 3-receptor has only sensing ability for Cr2O73- and Hg2+ ions, resulting in the association constants higher for Cr2O73- than to the Hg2+ ions. High selectivity towards Cr2O73- were also observed by fluorescence measurement among other ions (F-, SCN-, Hg2+, Cd2+, Ag+) with a low limit of detection (7.36 x 10(-6) mol dm(-3)). Proton NMR anion-binding investigations revealed a strong interaction of Cr2O73- anion with NH and CH groups of the receptor, showing that the combination with hydrogen-bonds donor groups strengthened the anion receptor association. Furthermore, remarkable association constants for dichromate anion obtained by all techniques strongly suggest the 3-receptor as a selective Cr(VI) sensor. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Sensing hazardous metal ions using a fluoroionophore calix[4]arene species containing two 8-oxyquinoline groups

The interaction of a calix[4]arene-based species containing two 8-oxyquinoline chromophore pendants with hazardous metal ions has been investigated using optical absorption and fluorimetric techniques. In the presence of Hg(2+), Cd(2+), and Pb(2+) ions, there is only a small decrease of the calixarene absorption band at 283 nm. The main changes are associated with the absorption band of the 8-oxyquinoline group at 315 nm, undergoing a systematic bathochromic shift to above 350 nm. In addition, a systematic decrease of the oxyquinoline emission at lambda(em) = 392 nm (lambda(exc) = 315 nm) has been observed. These observations are consistent with the coordination of the metal ions to the quinoline groups attached to the calixarene ligand, providing a useful fluoroinophore species for analytical purposes.Rede de Nanotecnologia Molecular e de Interfaces - Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico (Renami-CNPq)Rede de Nanotecnologia Molecular e de Interfaces - Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico (Renami-CNPq)Funda ao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo (Fapesp)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP

Evaluation of the biological effects of 5-Cl-8-oxyquinolinepropoxycalix[4]arene and 8-oxyquinolinepropoxycalix[4]arene in vitro and in vivo

The development of antibacterial and antifungal drugs has been the target of several pharmaceutical and chemical industries mainly due to the lack of effective drugs with low or no side effect. in this work, studies were conducted both in vitro and in vivo with 8-oxyquinolinepropoxycalix[4]arene (A) and 5-Cl-8-oxyquinolinepropoxycalix[4]arene (B) ligands, showing fairly good results. Cytotoxicity and fungicidal actions of compounds A and B were determined in Wistar male rats and peritoneal macrophages of mice. A slight change in the total of leukocytes and erythrocytes was observed on the hematologic assays, showing almost no inflammation after using both compounds in Wistar male rats. We have also noted some, but not significant, alteration in liver enzymes representing modest hepatotoxicity. Cytotoxicity of peritoneal macrophages, in the presence of compound A or B, showed 50% of survival of macrophages. On the other hand, macrophages previously infected with Candida albicans and treated with substance A or B exhibited an increased cytokine IL-10 at 24 h incubation. By checking the effect of substance A or B on growing C. albicans, the results pointed that these substances revealed antifungal activity against C. albicans, in 24 h culture with a reduction of yeast cells. Synadenium umbellatum and the ehrlich's solid tumor treatment assessment of inflammatory regulators (transforming growth factor protein-β1 and tumor necrosis factor-α) gene expression, hepatotoxicity and myelotoxicity

Studies have been attributed to cancer treatment, including the potential of several plants with putative anticancer activity. Among these is “Cola-note” (Synadenium umbellatum). We evaluated the effects of macerated S umbellatum at a concentration of 10 mg/kg in Bagg albino strain c mice and its myelotoxic, hepatotoxic, and antitumor activity as well as the expression of inflammatory genes (TGF-β1 and TNF-α). Cells from Ehrlich tumor were implanted in the dorsolateral region of 8 mice of the Bagg albino strain c mice; these animals were divided into control (treated with NaCl 0.9%) and treatment group (treated with macerated Cola-Nota 10 mg/kg). Treatment group animals showed no hepatotoxicity, but a potential myelotoxicity. The results suggest that treatment with Cola-Note macerate causes a decrease in expression of TNF-α and an increased expression of TGF-β1. The S umbellatum (10 mg/kg) is shown to be effective in reducing the concentration of neoplastic cachexia, but there was no antitumor activity21e
