    Kontrollundersøkelsene i Follavassdraget i 1988 viste at forurensningssituasjonen er stabil. Påbyggingen av slamdammen i 1988 har hittil ikke ført til noen endringer av betydning i tilførslene fra deponeringsområdet. Avgangsdeponeringen foregår fortsatt tilfredstillende. Tungmetalltilførslene fra Folldal sentrum er som tidligere år betydelige og sterkt varierende i løpet av året.Folldal Verk A/

    Avrenning fra kisgruvene i Meråkerfeltet påvirker fortsatt vannkvaliteten i vassdragene i nedbørfeltet selv 100 år etter at gruvedriften opphørte. Største forurensningskilde i området er Lillefjell gruve som bidrar med ca. 80 % av kobbertilførslene til Stjørdalselva som er ca. 3 tonn på årsbasis. Gilsåa og Dalåa er mest belastet med tungmetaller, men vassdragsreguleringen som er foretatt, kan ha bidratt til en forverret vannkvalitet i Torsbjørka nedenfor inntaket til kraftverket. Undersøkelser av bunnfaunaen viser klare påvirkninger i Dalåa, mens det var en naturlig bunnfauna i nedre del av Torsbjørka og i Stjørdalselva. Burforsøk med ørret viste en høy dødelighet i Gilsåa/Dalåa. Det ble også påvist at ørreten i Torsbjørka var metallbelastet

    Extracts of tamarillo, horned melon, and raspberries, but not extract of pear, inhibit human blood platelet aggregation: Investigating the underlying factors for their differential mechanisms

    Fruit extracts may be cardioprotective via favorable modulation of platelet-blood vessel interaction. We here show that sugar-free extracts of tamarillo, horned melon (kiwano), and raspberry in a dose-dependent manner inhibited ADP-induced platelet aggregation in platelet-rich plasma. In contrast, pear extract had no such effect. Furthermore, analysisof untargeted metabolites revealed the presence of platelet inhibitory components such as benzoic acid, caffeic acid, and gallic acid in the sugar-free extracts of tamarillo, raspberry, and kiwano, but not in pear extract. All these three fruit extracts inhibited the platelet production of TxB2 and the release of platelet factor 4. In conclusion, our work suggests that tamarillo, raspberry, and kiwano inhibit platelet aggregation partly due to the high levels of anti-platelet compounds such as benzoic, caffeic, and gallic acids

    Nutrient Control of Microbial Carbon Cycling Along an Ombrotrophicminerotrophic Peatland Gradient

    Future climate change and other anthropogenic activities are likely to increase nutrient availability in many peatlands, and it is important to understand how these additional nutrients will influence peatland carbon cycling. We investigated the effects of nitrogen and phosphorus on aerobic CH4 oxidation, anaerobic carbon mineralization (as CO2 and CH4 production), and anaerobic nutrient mineralization in a bog, an intermediate fen, and a rich fen in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We utilized a 5-week laboratory nutrient amendment experiment in conjunction with a 6-year field nutrient fertilization experiment to consider how the relative response to nitrogen and phosphorus differed among these wetlands over the short and long term. Field fertilizations generally increased nutrient availability in the upper 15 cm of peat and resulted in shifts in the vegetation community in each peatland. High nitrogen concentrations inhibited CH4 oxidation in bog peat during short-term incubations; however, long-term fertilization with lower concentrations of nitrogen stimulated rates of CH4 oxidation in bog peat. In contrast, no nitrogen effects on CH4 oxidation were observed in the intermediate or rich fen peat. Anaerobic carbon mineralization in bog peat was consistently inhibited by increased phosphorus availability, but similar phosphorus additions had few effects in the intermediate fen and stimulated CH4 production and nutrient mineralization in the rich fen. Our results demonstrate that nitrogen and phosphorus are important controls of peatland microbial carbon cycling; however, the role of these nutrients can differ over the short and long term and is strongly mediated by peatland type

    Det er laget en kunnskapsstatus for betydningen av sink i ferskvann med særlig vekt på tilførsler fra gruveavrenning. I tillegg ble det utført en undersøkelse av biologiske effekter i et vassdrag. Sveselva, med sink-belastning, men få andre metaller. Alle levende organismer har behov for sink, men det er begrensede kunnskaper om mekanismene bak giftigheten til metallet. Effekt-grenser for akvatiske organismer varier fra 10 til over 1000 µg/l. Blant de mest følsomme organismene er enkelte alger, planktoniske krepsdyr og utviklingsstadier hos fisk. I Sveselva var det tilsynelatende effekter på vegetasjon (begroing) allerede ved 20-30 µg/l, men det er usikkert om dette var det reelle belastningsnivået. Både vegetasjon og bunndyr var klart påvirket på stasjoner med konsentrasjoner i området 250-670 µg/l. Kadmium og sink akkumulerte i gjellene til utplassert dammusling på alle stasjoner nedenfor tilførslene og førte til noe forhøyede konsentrasjoner av metallotionein. Dammusling med høye metall-nivåer i gjellene filtrerte mindre alger og hadde høyere respirasjon enn dammusling med lavere metall-nivåer i gjellene. Resultatene viser at det er viktig å benytte flere mål for biologiske effekter i overvåking av effektene av metall-forurensning og å integrere kjemisk og biologisk overvåking

    Overall survival after resection for colon cancer in a national cohort study was adversely affected by TNM stage, lymph node ratio, gender, and old age

    Background A national surveillance program of colon cancer treatment was introduced in 2007. We examined prognostic factors for colon cancer operated in 2000 with an aim of improving survival in the new program and a special focus on the merit of lymph node yield. Methods A cohort of 269 patients, 152 women (56.5%), with a mean age of 71 years, was operated for colon cancer in 2000 at three teaching hospitals and followed up for 7 years. Results Overall 5-year survival was 58.0%, and overall hospital mortality was 5.2%, with 4.5% in elective cases and 12.5% after urgent surgery. In only 41.1% of the specimens were 12 or more lymph nodes retrieved, but this did not affect survival in the combined cohort, although one of the hospitals achieved a significantly better result with a harvest of 12 or more lymph nodes. In a multivariate analysis, old age, gender, a high lymph node ratio (LNR) at stage III, and tumor–node–metastasis stage were adverse factors for survival. Conclusions The operative mortality was high and should be reassessed. The lymph node count did not have a significant impact on outcome overall, whereas the LNR proved significant for stage III. A prospective protocol using overall lymph node yield as a surrogate measure for more radical surgery, nevertheless, seems warranted to improve the lymph node harvest according to international recommendations

    Safety representatives’ job crafting in organizational interventions: driver, counselor, watchdog, or abstainer

    The Nordic model and organizational research highlight the benefits of employee participation and collaboration between management and employees. Using job crafting theory, this paper studied the roles safety representatives craft for themselves in organizational interventions, the mental models that impact the roles they craft, and the possible consequences these roles have for intervention implementation. The research used a case study design to interview 15 safety representatives of 15 different departments at a university in Norway regarding their role in an organizational intervention. The thematic analysis identified five roles the safety representatives crafted for themselves: 1) Watchdogs safeguarding the work environment, 2) Watchdogs safeguarding the line managers’ implementation, 3) Counsellors to the line manager on how to implement the intervention activities, 4) Drivers who themselves implement the intervention activities, and 5) Abstainers who let the intervention occur without their involvement. The safety representatives’ mental models of their line manager, the work environment, their colleagues, and the intervention itself appeared to affect the roles they crafted. Finally, the different roles safety representatives crafted for themselves seemed to influence the intervention implementation
