    Advantages and disadvantages of retrenchment

    Get PDF
The stability of the job in a state or country usually depends on the condition of the economy in that country or state. Malaysia and many countries around the world have faced several economic downturns and recessions over the past year, this causes the slowdown of the economy and poor business conditions resulting in a slump in business due to the significant drop of the company’s profit. Companies that are suffering big losses may choose to restructure or reorganize their businesses to reduce the impact of poor business conditions. The wave of retrenchment usually hit the sectors of manufacturing, transportation, communication, commerce, and finance

While collaboration has been acknowledged as pertinent to the success of innovation product commercialization, the collaborative effort between the innovation recipient firm and the innovators remains limited.Besides, one of the central questions is how and under what condition the two parties are more likely to engage in a resilient collaborative effort, from the perspective of innovation recipient firms remain unclear. This new perspective requires an understanding of the relationships among new product Development (NPD) characteristics, collaboration, and product innovation market performance and survival within the context of technology transfer. In this paper, we employed transactional cost economic (TCE) theory to explain the relationships between NPD characteristics (innovation uncertainty and asset specificity) and collaboration, and the mediation effect of collaboration on the relationships between NPD and performance. Based on the response o 104 product innovation recipient firms, our findings suggest a positive relationship between NPD characteristics and, collaboration and market performance and innovation survival. This study revealed that consistent with TCE theory, NPD characteristics influence the pattern of ollaborationbetween the innovation recipient firms and the innovator, acted as an effort to reduce transactional risks. Our findings also concluded that collaboration mediates the relationship between NPD characteristics and market performance and innovation survival

Green Factory is a management tool for eliminate environment burden such as waste, chemical and pollution. Economic development grew too fast has effected major impact to environment. Carbon dioxide, loss of biodiversity, degradation of natural resources, global warming, ozone layer depletion and deforestation have effected on the environment. Based on world statistics, Malaysia has produced 29 million tonnes carbon dioxide and ranked 26th (0.66%) of the 215 countries in the world. 110 world leaders including Malaysia has agreed to work for reducing carbon dioxide gas in the Copenhagen Climate Change Summit 2009. Five main criteria for Green Factory have been identified; (1) Solar power generation systems, (2) Fuel cells system, (3) Co generation systems, (4) Air conditioning units and (5) Recycling system. A study was conducted to manufacturing companies that adopted Green Factory practices to assess its their green practices for minimizing environmental problems. The samples were 300 companies in Malaysia. Finally, 20% response rate has been received, with 60 respondents. Based on descriptive result, recycling shows the highest level of practices, followed by solar power co generations system, air conditioning units and fuel cells system. This study result shows Green Factory has significant relationship with environment performance (r=0.684, P<0.05) and business performance (r=0.510, P<0.05). Overall, the survey result shows green factory practices has significant impact on Malaysia manufacturing companies. In conclusion, Green Factory can be used as effective tool for improving not only for environment performance but also for business performance

    Innovation commercialization: Malaysian climate

    No full text
In the Malaysian innovation system, most of the key industrial players have taken the initiative to use scientific research outputs to commercialize products. Higher education institutions and research institutes have mainly focused on higher education and basic research. However, throughout the years, there have been some economic changes, where the world has seen a decrease in the competitiveness of pioneering industries, including in Malaysia. Malaysia has made some efforts to increase their economic value by diffusing its scientific knowledge, especially the development of research outputs by higher education institutions and research institutes or by innovative finns, to a much wider sphere of industrial activities through the process of technology transfer and commercialization. One of the strategies introduced by the government of Malaysia is the commercialization of innovations produced by higher education institutions or government-linked research institutes or private research institutes by using the technology transfer process. Thus, the relationship between the innovation provider and the innovation acquiring firm is very important in ensuring that the commercialization performance is successful
