Oil palm is a monoecious species of the palm subfamily Arecoideae, which produces functionally unisexual male and female inflorescences in an alternating cycle of the same plant. Thus, the species is qualified as temporally dioecious. The sex ratio of an oil palm can be influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Besides, physiological stress like severe defoliation has been known in some studies can induce a higher frequency of males and abortions but it is not known how such factors interact with endogenous cycles nor the developmental state when sex is determined known with accuracy. This is because the inflorescence sex determination and differentiation also has been identified that it is a complex process where phonological information can only be obtained from the plants growing in the field. In term of defoliation, data from previous studies has shown that defoliation will affected on the inflorescence production. This lead to a decreasing in sex ratio and increasing in abortion rate causing a reduction in the number of yield. So, for the yield predicting and forecasting purpose, the effects from oil palm defoliation on the sex differentiation and differentiation can give impacts on those purpose

    Get PDF
Southeast Asia countries have experienced rapid economic growth within the past decades with a significant increase in energy dependency and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Continuous development in the urban area has stimulated a rise in energy consumption in many Southeast Asia countries, which resulted in an improvement of citizen's lifestyles and living standards due to increasing income and population. Understanding the relationship between economic growth, energy consumption, and carbon dioxide emissions help economies in formulating energy policies, enhancing energy security and developing a sustainable energy resource. Therefore, this study focuses on the economic growth, energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions evolved in Southeast Asia by using Environment Kuznets Curve theory. This paper could be useful and beneficial for the Southeast Asia countries to form appropriate environmental policies to maintain the balance of energy demand and supply and to deal with environmental quality issues

Analysing the professional negligence of architects in the construction industry in Malaysia: a comparative study with the position in Singapore / Nur Adilla Ruslan… [ et al. ]

    Get PDF
Construction failure has always been associated with the negligent act of an architect in conducting their duties. This perception has long been emerged in the mind of the society in Malaysia particularly. This can be seen when a building collapsed the first person to be pointed out will be the architect despite other persons such as engineers and quantity surveyor or the contractor that also had contributed their work to the building up of the said building. Thus, it has reflected a bad perspective on architects in Malaysia conducting their duties. The purpose of this study is to determine the roles of architects in Malaysia by making a comparison with the law in Singapore to identify its relation with the current situation of construction failure in Malaysia. It is necessary to make the comparison as to identify whether there is any need for improvement in the current law or whether there are other factors that could contribute to the construction failure in Malaysia. We will also examine the previous cases to relate with the actual roles and duties of architects both in Singapore and Malaysia. In conclusion we will examine how the implementation of the existing laws in Malaysia as well as in Singapore

Objective of this study is to present a research conducted on ground (fine) and unground (coarse) POFA in polymer concrete (PC) followed by determination on the physico-mechanical properties of PC. Physical properties of micro-fillers and mechanical properties of produced PCs were characterized. Calcium carbonate and silica sand were also used as micro-fillers for comparison purpose. The samples were subjected to compression and flexural. Morphology images of the particles were captured under morphology test to support the findings. Results showed that fine POFA micro-filler has a highly promising potential in becoming PC filler compared to coarse micro-filler. Additionally, its produced PC had comparable strength to PC with calcium carbonate. From the strength development and sustainability stand point, fine POFA has demonstrated its capability to produce quality and sustainable P

ISOLATION AND SCREENING OF BIOSURFACTANT-PRODUCING MARINE BACTERIA FROM KUANTAN PORT, PAHANG, MALAYSIA

Biosurfactants play an important role in bioremediation of organic pollutants such as petroleum hydrocarbon. The unique properties of biosurfactants make them possible to be used in the remediation of hydrocarbon contaminated sites. Therefore, the existence of indigenous microorganisms that have the ability to consume petroleum hydrocarbon as carbon source and simultaneously produce biosurfactants in order to facilitate the hydrocarbon metabolism can be manipulated for bioremediation purposes. In this study, isolation and screening of potential biosurfactant-producing bacteria from two sampling points in Kuantan Port seawater were successfully done. Amongst the isolates, 4 out of 7 isolates from Point A were Gram negative bacteria and 2 out 5 isolates from Point B were Gram negative bacteria. The positive oxidase test resulted for all isolates from Point A and only B5 from Point B produced negative result. Catalase test conducted produced positive results on isolates from Point A (A3, A5, A6& A7) and Point B (B1, B2, B4 & B5).The highest percentage emulsification index measured belonged to isolate B4 and B5 which are 67%, thus make these isolates to be the most promising biosurfactant producers. Further identification by 16S rRNA gene found that isolates were closely related to Rhodococcus erythropolis (A1), Psedomonas stutzeri (A2), Pseudoalteromonas lipolytica (A3, A6 and B4), Vibrio brasiliensis (A4 and B2), Vibrio tubiashii (B1), Marinobacter salsuginis (A5), Labrenzia aggregate (A7), Marinococcus halophilus (B3) and Thalassospira xianmenensis(B5). Hence, through biosurfactant activities exhibited by isolates, B4 and B5 were the most potential isolates to produce biosurfactant. Therefore, these isolates can potentially be exploited to aid in bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated sites and would also be useful to enhance oil recovery in petroleum industry

Internships play a significant role in students' development as they help to prepare the student for real-life work experience. This research is carried out using a quantitative method, and data are collected from culinary art students before and after their internship, and the differences are recorded. A total of 70 students are involved in this study, and to ensure the validity of the findings, the same group of students is required to answer the survey. Findings indicate significant differences in students' intentions after the internship due to problems related to bullying, sexual harassment, long working hours, and hijab discrimination. Normal concrete to polymer concrete bond strength: mohr-coulomb theory

    Get PDF
This paper discusses an experimental study conducted to evaluate the bonding strength between normal concrete (NC) and polymer concrete (PC) substrate. Ground palm oil fuel ash (GPOFA) was incorporated as micro-filler in this polymer concrete (PC-GPOFA) to investigate its effect on bonding strength. As comparisons, PC containing others filler were prepared, i.e., PC incorporating calcium carbonate (PC CaCO3), silica sand (PC Sand), and unground POFA (PC UPOFA) filler. Two tests were conducted to investigate the bonding between two substrates - slant shear and splitting tensile tests. After critical condition surface (smooth surface) was prepared, the effect of bonding was determined using mohr-coulomb theory. Overall results indicated that PC incorporating GPOFA improved the bonding to normal concrete. This result indicates that the bonding strength of NC to PC at critical condition is affected by self-adhesion of polymer concrete to the normal concrete. The self-adhesive characteristic of polymer concrete to normal concrete can be easily identified in mohr-coulomb analysis. All-in-all, the PC incorporating ground POFA could improve the bonding to the normal concrete

Does flood affect property values? a hedonic analysis of residential property values in Peninsular Malaysia

    Get PDF
The hedonic pricing model (HPM) has been used to identify the values of residential property due to flood impact. Most of the previous studies had been conducted using flood frequency and flood depth to measure flood variables rather than flood duration. The hedonic pricing study presented here investigated the effect of flood duration on residential property value in Peninsular Malaysia. We measured the housing attributes involving location, structural, and neighborhood attributes. We also developed the interaction variable between flood and structural attributes to determine whether the effect of flood duration on residential property value differs across house age, size of land area, and number of bedroom. The results suggest that the sale price of residential property is significantly decreased by 0.015 percent due to flood
