    “at Least, I Have to Repeat Five Times” Frequent Reading Difficulties

    PISA\u27s result in 2016 shows that Indonesian country score in reading, 397, is still below PISA average score, 493. Although the rank increased, the below-average score denotes that the students are still less literate while reading is vital to all scholars. Most higher education students still encounter difficulties when reading, per se reading is profoundly essential in academes. This study is devoted to shed light on intrapersonal difficulties that higher students face in reading. Qualitative research method was employed involving 83 Economics students at Syiah Kuala University. The data collection process was carried out through questionnaire and interview procedures after which the data were analyzed using three-steps analysis. The result suggests that 91.5% of the students has difficulties in retention—where they tend to fail retrieving just-obtained information, discharge information found in passage(s) with prior knowledge, and cannot relate the information with real life experiences. Then 87% has comprehension difficulty where they are not optimally engaged while reading, confused with contextual meanings, main ideas and supporting details, and about what to expect from passage(s). Finally, 12% faces problems in decoding (regardless of Dyslexic symptoms) for which they still read word-by-word and occasionally despise punctuations. Generally, it leads to a discussion that problems in concentrating promote problems in memory-processing. The authors would gently suggest students to be trained to monitor and regulate their metacognitive ability during reading

    Big q-Laguerre and q-Meixner polynomials and representations of the algebra U_q(su(1,1))

    Diagonalization of a certain operator in irreducible representations of the positive discrete series of the quantum algebra U_q(su(1,1)) is studied. Spectrum and eigenfunctions of this operator are found in an explicit form. These eigenfunctions, when normalized, constitute an orthonormal basis in the representation space. The initial U_q(su(1,1))-basis and the basis of eigenfunctions are interrelated by a matrix with entries, expressed in terms of big q-Laguerre polynomials. The unitarity of this connection matrix leads to an orthogonal system of functions, which are dual with respect to big q-Laguerre polynomials. This system of functions consists of two separate sets of functions, which can be expressed in terms of q-Meixner polynomials M_n(x;b,c;q) either with positive or negative values of the parameter b. The orthogonality property of these two sets of functions follows directly from the unitarity of the connection matrix. As a consequence, one obtains an orthogonality relation for q-Meixner polynomials M_n(x;b,c;q) with b<0.     Active involvement of students in co-curriculum (sports) versus generic skills

    The active involvement of students in sports activities is viewed from different levels of achievement beginning with the national representation of the residential colleges, faculties, and universities in prestigious sporting events at international levels. The skills that are developed through extra-curricular activities are generic skills. The involvement of students in co-curricular activities can help to shape their generic skills, thus leading to self-promotion in the workplace. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to examine the enhancement of generic skills among engineering and technical students of UTHM who are actively involved in co-curricular activities (sports). This study will focus on identifying the factors of involvement, the level of application among students, and the perceptions of the students through their active involvement in extra-curricular activities (sports). A survey was conducted using a quantitative approach. A general questionnaire, which was designed to fulfil the objectives and to answer the research questions for this study, was distributed to 213 engineering and technical student athletes of UTHM who are actively involved in co-curricular activities (sports). It was found that the engineering and technical student athletes of UTHM agreed that their active involvement in extra-curricular activities (sports) was due to interpersonal, intrapersonal and structural factors. The results showed that out of seven generic skills, three constructs of generic skills, namely communication, teamwork and management, demonstrate a high level of application through active involvement in extra-curricular activities (sports). These findings may also help the university to focus on the development of generic skills in engineering and technical students through co-curricular activities (sports) in addition to producing athletes who are able to create a name for the university at national or international level

    Study of Frequency Selective Surfaces on Radar Cross Section Reduction

    With recent technology in radar cross section reduction (RCSR), a periodic array of frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) which exploits a non-metallic ground plane and slot embedded in the patch elements have been presented. In this study, the single layer FSSs with different incidence angles and substrate thicknesses have been investigated and simulated at the X-band frequency range using CST computer model. Based on the FSSs design, the minimum reflection response is shown to be -74.68 dB while the minimum RCS is -5577 dBm2 occurred at the incidence angle which is equal to 75 degree. Moreover, the maximum value of RCS at -4417 dBm2 has been observed when the incident wave and observer is located at the 0 degree which is offers maximum RCS reduction. Analysis of the CST computer model has been integrated with MATLAB 7 to show the reliability of the two computer model in order to study the feasibility of reflection response in reducing RCS. RCS calculations have been carried out using MATLAB 7 computer model in order to investigate the performance of minimum reflection response which offers reduction in RCS. From the simulated results, it can be concluded that, 75 degree&rsquo;s incidence angles offered the best performance on RCS reduction due to the angles of incidence, minimum reflection response and lower surface current distribution

    Synthesis, Characterization and DNA Cleavage of Copper(II) Complex with D,L-Dithiothreitol

    Purpose: To study deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) shearing capability of copper(II) complex of dithiothreitol (DTT) and to fevaluate its potential application in cancer therapy.Methods: A parrot green complex was synthesized by grinding copper acetate monohydrate and DTT in 1:2 molar ratio in a mortar until no fumes of acetic acid were observed. The complex was characterized using attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infra-red (ATR-FTIR), and x-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Further information was also collected through Karl Fischer titration, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and (magnetic moment. Cleavage of DNA was determined by agarose gel electrophoresis. The gel was then stained, analyzed and photographed under ultraviolet (UV) light.Results: ATR-FTIR confirmed the formation of copper(II) complex with DTT by binding through thiol group based on the disappearance of the thiol (-SH) stretching peak at 2545 cm-1. The crystalline structure was elucidated by a sharp intense peak at 38.520 in XRD spectrum while the octahedral geometry of complex was inferred from a magnetic moment of 1.72 B.M. The results for water content obtained by Karl Fischer titration and TGA revealed that water molecules are not part of the coordination sphere of the complex. Cleavage study of DNA showed that the complex completely sheared the circular DNA compared to pure DTT.Conclusion: Solvent free synthesis of Copper(II)-DTT complex has been successfully achieved, and an anhydrous complex with octahedral geometry obtained.     Developmental research of sustainable technologies to minimise problematic road embankment settlements

    Challenging, problematic and non-uniform ground conditions are a night mare to geotechnical engineers tasked with the design and construction of buildings and transport infrastructure. These often suffer undesirable structural settlements. Designing within the current understanding of geotechnics; settlement in peat and organic soils need to be recognised to include the known “primary and secondary consolidation characteristics” and the lesser known “tertiary consolidation phase”. These eventually contribute cumulatively to the consequential uneven and hazardous “bumpy road” surfaces. Undulating flexible road pavements result primarily from the transference of the heavy self-weight of the embankment fill to yielding and non-uniform subgrade. The adoption of conventional design/repair methods such as pile, vertical drain, soil replacement and soil stabilisation are expensive and inappropriate in very soft ground conditions. These then lead to unjustifiably high and repetitive maintenance costs. There being no one quick fix solution for all; pragmatic research must necessarily identify the best/progressively improved practical and sustainable solution. A viable solution is to develop criteria and explore the concept of a “masonry arch bridge structure/lintel-column structure” and adopting sustainable materials through pragmatic searching for appropriate recyclable waste materials. This will lead to the basis for a sustainable, innovative, strong, stiff, permeable composite mat structure that can be used on soft and/or yielding ground conditions. Conceptual lightweight fill technology including the popularly used expanded polystyrene (EPS) and the innovative composite mats recently being developed by the research team are outlined
