This research has been conducted of the undergraduate students in the Department of Information Science and Library Management, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. A survey questionnaire was developed and used to collect data on students’ demographics, internet use behavior and purposes of internet use in the Department of Information Science and Library Management. The obtained input data were then evaluated using SPSS and the findings have been interpreted. The results showed that students prefer electronic media to printed media in seeking information and they use the Internet mostly to do homework and prepare for their lessons. The students find the quality of easy access of information more important than its other features and they use search engines most in seeking information. The most frequently used search engine is Google. This study discovers what kinds of differences in these behaviors and characteristics may exist between different class ranks

Home automation system is becoming popular day by day all-over the world. Starting from simple home to large industrial setup everywhere Home Automation is used in a large number. With the advancement of technologies home automation system are gradually advancing more and more, making the life of every individual smoother and easier with minimizing the work load. Home automation refers to the automatic and electronic control of household appliances, features and activities which is initially developed with the aim to provide supporting system for the elderly and disabled, especially those who live alone but now a days it also fulfil the requirement of a large number of population seeking luxury and sophisticated home automation platform. The main objective of the project is to provide the necessary freedom of controlling devices in home or industry like tube light, electrical bulbs, electrical fan, AC etc. automatically using different sensors like PIR, DHT 11, wit the Arduino UNO platform by sensing the presence of individual. The device is made smart enough to detect human presence using PIR sensor and measuring different other parameters like daylight, temperature etc to control Electrical bulbs and the speed of fan. The proposed prototype also come with a LCD display to make the user to see the different values of measured parameters like temperature etc. The device also enables the user to manually control different activities like ON/OFF lights and speed of fan. The device is also a cost effective model to make it possible to implement by everyone according to there requirements

Nitrogen removal by wetlands in a cold climate

    Get PDF
Nitrogen (N), a fundamental component of living organisms, has become one of the main global concerns for human society due to the myriad of negative effects of excessive N on ecosystems. Anthropogenic activities such as agriculture, industrial production, urbanisation and mining are major sources of N to freshwaters. Semi-natural and constructed wetlands planted with macrophytes are now widely used in many parts of the world to remove N from water. However, the potential of constructed wetlands for N removal under cold climatic conditions is still not well studied. We also have limited understanding of how macrophyte species and growth form richness as well as functional trait diversity affect N-cycling in constructed wetlands by influencing plant N accumulation, plant associated denitrification and abundance of denitrifying bacterial communities. In mesocosm experiments and in situ studies, I investigated how species and growth form (emerging and submerged macrophytes and bryophytes) richness as well as plant functional trait diversity of macrophytes affect N-cycling in wetlands. Moreover, I tested the applicability of constructed floating wetlands for improved N removal at the local scale in a cold climate. My results highlight that macrophytes are important for both main N removal pathways, viz. uptake and denitrification. Moreover, bacterial denitrification gene abundance on roots and shoots of macrophytes were an important predictor of the denitrification potential of macrophytes. Species and growth form richness of macrophytes enhanced N removal in wetlands. Moreover, I identified complementarity and a selection effect as important diversity related mechanisms, explaining the total N removal from water including plant N accumulation. Functional traits of macrophytes affected N-cycling in wetlands through direct and indirect pathways. The application of constructed floating wetlands at the local scale is feasible in a cold climate with denitrification as the main N removal pathway in these wetland type. Further in situ studies with high numbers of species and growth forms are needed to generalize my findings. Future studies should also consider plant secondary metabolites to better understand the function of the macrophyte-denitrifier interplay

Usage pattern of Facebook among the students of Dhaka University: a study

    Get PDF
The usage pattern of Facebook by the students of information science and library management (ISLM) department at Dhaka University was studied. Questionnaires were distributed to 160 B.A. (Honours) students of all four years of ISLM Department out of which 139 questionnaires were found usable. The study found that a large number of students create Facebook account after they enter the university. The present study also revealed that personality characteristics, gender, educational level, geographical area and age influence ISLM students’ patterns of Facebook use and their perceptions about Facebook. The findings of this study also indicate that use of Facebook would be a supplementary tool in university education

Weak Ties are Weaker than Strong Ties in Generating Social Capital on Social Networking Sites

This study explores the relationship between Social Networking Site, like Facebook, KakaoStory and Social capital in respect to Strong ties and weak ties. Several earlier papers suggested that weak ties are important than strong ties when it comes to information sharing whereas few other papers also given important to strong ties. We also attempt to find the relationship between strong ties, weak ties in respect to generating social capital in Social Networking Sites (SNSs). This paper found that strong ties play more important role in creating social capital when it comes to emotional support, monitory support as well as personal work
