RESTRICTIVE DIETARY PATTERNS AND WEIGHT REGAIN IN ADULTS BETWEEN 18-40

    Get PDF
Although multiple studies have examined the effects of carbohydrate-restrictive diets, their safety in the long term is still heavily debated. Moreover, the dietary restraint theory states that there is alteration in the way food is regulated, switching from physiological to cognitive control; this change makes individuals more susceptible to disinhibited eating. Furthermore, carbohydrates, such as fruits, grains, legumes, etc., are the primary sources of energy that our bodies require during moderate to intense exercise. That being said, their involvement in our diet in crucial, as they grant us the ability to perform and function more efficiently. This study will investigate perceived physical (weight gain), mental (stress, body dissatisfaction), behavioral (binge eating) changes of individuals who had a carbohydrate restrictive diet for two weeks in the last year. The survey will be developed based on previous literature and have been validated in prior research. The binge eating and overeating scale is adopted from the American Psychiatric Association’s binge-eating scale (2013). The perceived stress scale is adopted from Cohen and Williamson’s Perceived Stress scale. Finally, the body dissatisfaction scale is adopted from Gideon et al.’s eating disorder examination questionnaire (2018). All of them will be measured as a multi-item scale, ranging from either strongly disagree (1) and strongly agree (5) or never (1) to very often (5). Questions such as gender, age, income, education level, and ethnicity are included. The participants will be asked to report their weight and height. Body Mass Index (BMI) will be calculated as weight (kg) divided by height squared (m2) to their BMI categories. The survey will be distributed via Amazon Mechanical Turk and is expected to be completed by 500 participants. Amazon Mechanical Turk (AMT) is a crowd-sourcing Internet marketplace enabling individuals and business to coordinate the use of human intelligence. AMT is strategically chosen for this study because of its ability to recruit a large number of subjects that is more representative of the U.S. population than in-person convenience samples. Theoretically, the completion of the proposed study will add novel literature to the nutrition research field. Practically, at the completion of this study, we will propose strategies and approaches about restrictive diets, post-diet weight gain, stress, and body dissatisfaction. Furthermore, we also hope that the research findings will give nutrition literature an area to touch on regarding the education, training, and research

    Get PDF
In this paper, the focus will be on environmental storytelling in first-person games. The aim is to examine and understand why this technique is rarely utilised in the AAA industry, as well as explore the ways it can assist players in comprehending the intended explanations of the designers. It will also analyse different video games that use this method of storytelling and how they deal with it, finding differences and similarities between them. Finally, a small video game demo will be developed using all the things learned and explaining why and how they were used

Graph partitioning applied to DAG scheduling to reduce NUMA effects

    Get PDF
The complexity of shared memory systems is becoming more relevant as the number of memory domains increases, with different access latencies and bandwidth rates depending on the proximity between the cores and the devices containing the data. In this context, techniques to manage and mitigate non-uniform memory access (NUMA) effects consist in migrating threads, memory pages or both and are typically applied by the system software. We propose techniques at the runtime system level to reduce NUMA effects on parallel applications. We leverage runtime system metadata in terms of a task dependency graph. Our approach, based on graph partitioning methods, is able to provide parallel performance improvements of 1.12X on average with respect to the state-of-the-art.This work has been partially supported by the RoMoL ERC Advanced Grant (GA 321253), the European HiPEAC Network of Excellence and the Spanish Government (contract TIN2015-65316-P). Social representations of the diet in patients with diabetes mellitus

    Get PDF
The "diet" is part of the collective’s worldview, where culture shapes the webs of significance, giving way to a collective ideology internalised in each individual, which is fully accepted, assigned and assimilated by the collective. The diabetes mellitus is a condition whose importance lies in being one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. This pathology is complex, but their struggle leads to the most basic and elemental: the "diet". Methodology: Explore the common sense in relation to "diet" in patients with diabetes mellitus, via the Theory of Social Representations (SR). Semi-structured surveys were applied to 100 patients in three units of the Mexican Institute of Social Security of the State of Mexico, to define on the basis of the diabetic patients to the "diet". Results: The term "diet" is a social construct, which builds and reinforces a social reality: poverty, inequality, and decontextualized biomedical control and public policies without social inclusive. Conclusion: The end of this research reveals the thin threads of marginalization and ignomia of our collective suffering from diabetes, expose a inequality and insecurity, perpetuating a "diet" desregionalizada inadequate, contextualized, and far from the truth

Current high performance computing architectures are composed of large shared memory NUMA nodes, among other components. Such nodes are becoming increasingly complex as they have several NUMA domains with different access latencies depending on the core where the access is issued. In this work, we propose techniques based on graph partitioning to efficiently mitigate the negative impact of NUMA effects on parallel applications performance, which are able to improve the execution time of OpenMP parallel codes 2.02× times on average when run on architectures with strong NUMA effects

El proceso de acumulación de poder y capital en México (1982-2018)

    Get PDF
The objective of this research illustrates the process of accumulation of political power and capital between 1982 and 2018, derived from the adoption of the neoliberal model in Mexico, and its implications for the socioeconomic development of the population in that period. Method: A socio-historical journey was developed based on a bibliographic review based on official, journalistic and scientific journal sources. The analysis and systematization of the information revealed that the adoption of the neoliberal strategy sought economic recovery, through various structural adjustments, including the reduction of state intervention and the inclusion of the business sector as the engine of the national economy. However, far from improving the living conditions of the population, a new stage of capital accumulation began, accompanied by the reorganization of the business power groups that gradually expanded their influence on political decisions to increase profitability up to 5 times. over the growth of the national GDP (Castillo, 2017:28), in a country with more than 50% of the population in conditions of multidimensional poverty (INEGI, 2018). In addition to this, increasingly solid transit bridges were built from the political to the business sphere. In conclusion, the technocratic and neoliberal ideology shared by the political and business class determined the decline of the welfare state, and the deterioration of the redistributive capacity of social policy, at the same time that the political-business link promoted the accumulation of capital, through legal and even illegal mechanismsEl objetivo de esta investigación ilustra el proceso de acumulación de poder político y de capital entre 1982 y 2018, derivado de la adopción del modelo neoliberal en México, y sus implicaciones en el desarrollo socioeconómico de la población en dicho periodo.

Tool steel selection for cold forming of high strength steels based on the stress distribution in tools

    Get PDF
The excellent combination of high mechanical strength, high elongation and strain hardening of Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) has allowed their increasing use in the automobile industry to reduce vehicle weight and thereby fuel consumption while improving crash performance. However, the implementation of such high strength materials has generated difficulties related to wear acceleration and premature failure of forming tools. High loading during cold forming of AHSS increases to a great extent the tool requirements in terms of toughness and hardness properties. The main alternative to overcome these difficulties involves an optimized selection tool material through a proper evaluation of the stress state in the tools themselves. In this work, stress states on tooling during cold forming of AHSS have been evaluated by means of finite element simulation. The calculated results allow selecting the most suitable tool steel in terms of microstructure and mechanical properties.Postprint (published version
