    Optimization of AlN thin layers on diamond substrates for high frequency SAW resonators

    AlN/diamond heterostructures are very promising for high frequency surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonators. In their design, the thickness of the piezoelectric film is one of the key parameters. On the other hand, the film material quality and, hence, the device performance, also depend on that thickness. In this work, polished microcrystalline diamond substrates have been used to deposit AlN films by reactive sputtering, from 150 nm up to 3 μm thick. A high degree of the c-axis orientation has been obtained in all cases. SAW one port resonators at high frequency have been fabricated on these films with a proper combination of the film thickness and transducer size

    Statistical Inference for a General Family of Modified Exponentiated Distributions

    In this paper, a modified exponentiated family of distributions is introduced. The new model was built from a continuous parent cumulative distribution function and depends on a shape parameter. Its most relevant characteristics have been obtained: the probability density function, quantile function, moments, stochastic ordering, Poisson mixture with our proposal as the mixing distribution, order statistics, tail behavior and estimates of parameters. We highlight the particular model based on the classical exponential distribution, which is an alternative to the exponentiated exponential, gamma and Weibull. A simulation study and a real application are presented. It is shown that the proposed family of distributions is of interest to applied areas, such as economics, reliability and finances

    The Post-Common Envelope and Pre-Cataclysmic Binary PG 1224+309

    We have made extensive spectroscopic and photometric observations of PG 1224+309, a close binary containing a DA white dwarf primary and an M4+ secondary. The H alpha line is in emission due to irradiation of the M-star by the hot white dwarf and is seen to vary around the orbit. From the radial velocities of the H alpha line we derive a period of P = 0.258689 +/- 0.000004 days and a semi-amplitude of K_Halpha = 160 +/- 8 km/s. We estimate a correction Delta_K = 21 +/- 2 km/s, where K_M = K_Halpha + Delta_K. Radial velocity variations of the white dwarf reveal a semi-amplitude of K_WD = 112 +/- 14 km/s. The blue spectrum of the white dwarf is well fit by a synthetic spectrum having T_eff = 29,300 K and log(g) = 7.38. The white dwarf contributes 97% of the light at 4500 Angstroms and virtually all of the light blueward of 3800 Angstroms. No eclipses are observed. The mass inferred for the white dwarf depends on the assumed mass of the thin residual hydrogen envelope: 0.40 < M_WD < 0.45 solar masses for hydrogen envelope masses of 0 < M_H < 4.0E-4 solar masses. We argue that the mass of the white dwarf is closer to 0.45 solar masses, hence it appears that the white dwarf has a relatively large residual hydrogen envelope. The mass of the M-star is then M_M = 0.28 +/- 0.05 solar masses, and the inclination is i = 77 +/- 7 degrees. We discuss briefly how PG 1224+309 may be used to constrain theories of close binary star evolution, and the past and future histories of PG 1224+309 itself. The star is both a ``post-common envelope'' star and a ``pre-cataclysmic binary'' star.     Paspalum dilatatum Poir. (dallisgrass) is an excellent C4 forage for summer production, highly productive with a wide distribution within warm-temperate regions. P. dilatatum is native to South America with special relevance for milk and meat production since its forage quality is superior to that of other C4 forage grasses and it shows tolerance to frost and water stress. In situations of temperate and warm temperate climate, the presence of these species plays a key role in the ecological stability of the system due to the complementarity of the growth cycles between winter and summer grasses. Claviceps paspali (ergot) is a fungus that mainly parasitizes Paspalum spp., generating a structure called sclerotia, in which indole-diterpenoid alkaloids are isolated. Despite the excellent forage characteristics of Paspalum species, there is a need for the generation of varieties able to overcome two major limitations that were identified early on in this species, such as ergot susceptibility and seed production. With this objective, selected genotypes were crossed between apomictic and sexual species of different ploidy using P. malacophyllum as a source of immunity. Immunity to ergot has been evaluated in the field for two years in different representative regions of Uruguay and the accessions that did not get sick were selected as pollen donors. Crosses made with P. flavescens showed a germination percentage ranging between 1.7 and 7.09, while in P. dilatatum var. Chirú the range was reduced between 0.99 and 1.25 according to the employed parents. The hybrid nature of the progeny is being verified by microsatellites and functional markers associated with immunity and DNA content estimated by flow cytometry.     Slashed Rayleigh Distribution

    In this article we study a subfamily of the slashed-Weibull family. This subfamily can be seen as an extension of the Rayleigh distribution with more flexibility in terms of the kurtosis of distribution. This special feature makes the extension suitable for fitting atypical observations. It arises as the ratio of two independent random variables, the one in the numerator being a Rayleigh distribution and a power of the uniform distribution in the denominator. We study some probability properties, discuss maximum likelihood estimation and present real data applications indicating that the slashed-Rayleigh distribution can improve the ordinary Rayleigh distribution in fitting real data.En este artículo estudiamos una subfamilia de la familia slashed-Weibull. Esta subfamilia puede ser vista como una extensión de la distribución Rayleigh con más flexibilidad en cuanto a la kurtosis de la distribución. Esta particularidad hace que la extensión sea adecuada para ajustar observaciones atípicas. Esto surge como la razón de dos variables aleatorias independientes, una en el numerador siendo una distribución Rayleigh y una potencia de la distribución uniforme en el denominador. Estudiamos algunas propiedades de probabilidad, discutimos la estimación de máxima verosimilitud y presentamos aplicaciones a datos reales indicando que la distribución slashed-Rayleigh presenta mejor ajuste para datos reales que la distribución Rayleigh

    A Subarcsecond Companion to the T Tauri Star AS 353B

    Adaptive optics imaging of the bright visual T Tauri binary AS 353 with the Subaru Telescope shows that it is a hierarchical triple system. The secondary component, located 5.6" south of AS 353A, is resolved into a subarcsecond binary, AS 353Ba and Bb, separated by 0.24". Resolved spectroscopy of the two close components shows that both have nearly identical spectral types of about M1.5. Whereas AS 353A and Ba show clear evidence for an infrared excess, AS 353Bb does not.     Why are the K dwarfs in the Pleiades so Blue?

    The K dwarfs in the Pleiades fall nearly one half magnitude below a main sequence isochrone when plotted in a color-magnitude diagram utilizing V magnitude as the luminosity index and B-V as the color index. This peculiarity has been known for forty years but has gone unexplained and mostly ignored. When compared to Praesepe members, the Pleiades K dwarfs again are subluminous (or blue) in a color-magnitude diagram using B-V as the color index. However, using V-I as the color index, stars in the two clusters are coincident to M_V ~ 10; using V-K as the color index, Pleiades late K and M stars fall above the main sequence locus defined by Praesepe members. We believe that the anomalous spectral energy distributions for the Pleiades K dwarfs, as compared to older clusters, are a consequence of rapid stellar rotation and may be primarily due to spottedness. If so, the required areal filling factor for the cool component has to be very large (=> 50%). Weak-lined T Tauri stars have similar color anomalies, and we suspect this is a common feature of all very young K dwarfs (sp. type > K3). The peculiar spectral energy distribution needs to be considered in deriving accurate pre-main sequence isochrone-fitting ages for clusters like the Pleiades since the age derived will depend on the temperature index used.Comment: 41 pages, 15 figures, AASTeX5.0.     The Palomar Testbed Interferometer Calibrator Catalog

    The Palomar Testbed Interferometer (PTI) archive of observations between 1998 and 2005 is examined for objects appropriate for calibration of optical long-baseline interferometer observations - stars that are predictably point-like and single. Approximately 1,400 nights of data on 1,800 objects were examined for this investigation. We compare those observations to an intensively studied object that is a suitable calibrator, HD217014, and statistically compare each candidate calibrator to that object by computing both a Mahalanobis distance and a Principal Component Analysis. Our hypothesis is that the frequency distribution of visibility data associated with calibrator stars differs from non-calibrator stars such as binary stars. Spectroscopic binaries resolved by PTI, objects known to be unsuitable for calibrator use, are similarly tested to establish detection limits of this approach. From this investigation, we find more than 350 observed stars suitable for use as calibrators (with an additional 140\approx 140 being rejected), corresponding to 95\gtrsim 95% sky coverage for PTI. This approach is noteworthy in that it rigorously establishes calibration sources through a traceable, empirical methodology, leveraging the predictions of spectral energy distribution modeling but also verifying it with the rich body of PTI's on-sky observations.Comment: 100 pages, 7 figures, 7 tables; to appear in the May 2008ApJS, v176n

    Near and Mid-IR Photometry of the Pleiades, and a New List of Substellar Candidate Members

    We make use of new near and mid-IR photometry of the Pleiades cluster in order to help identify proposed cluster members. We also use the new photometry with previously published photometry to define the single-star main sequence locus at the age of the Pleiades in a variety of color-magnitude planes. The new near and mid-IR photometry extend effectively two magnitudes deeper than the 2MASS All-Sky Point Source catalog, and hence allow us to select a new set of candidate very low mass and sub-stellar mass members of the Pleiades in the central square degree of the cluster. We identify 42 new candidate members fainter than Ks =14 (corresponding to 0.1 Mo). These candidate members should eventually allow a better estimate of the cluster mass function to be made down to of order 0.04 solar masses. We also use new IRAC data, in particular the images obtained at 8 um, in order to comment briefly on interstellar dust in and near the Pleiades. We confirm, as expected, that -- with one exception -- a sample of low mass stars recently identified as having 24 um excesses due to debris disks do not have significant excesses at IRAC wavelengths. However, evidence is also presented that several of the Pleiades high mass stars are found to be impacting with local condensations of the molecular cloud that is passing through the Pleiades at the current epoch.Comment: Accepted to ApJS; data tables and embedded-figure version available at http://spider.ipac.caltech.edu/staff/stauffer/pleiades07
