Factors That Influence Whether Mexican Americans With Depression Seek Treatment

    Get PDF
Mexican Americans, the largest Hispanic subgroup in the United States, tend to underuse mental health services. Grounded in Andersen\u27s behavioral model of health services use, the purpose of this nonexperimental study was to examine the likelihood of birth country, education, income, and insurance predicting which respondents would report seeking mental health services to treat depression. The Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview was used to diagnose depression in 203 Mexican Americans whose data was archived from the primary study. This archived data was analyzed within this study. The results of the 2 x 2 chi-square tests of independence indicated a significant association between a person\u27s birth country and the likelihood that a person will seek mental health treatment, with U.S.-born participants more likely to seek mental health treatment than foreign-born participants. There were no significant bivariate associations found between education, income, or insurance and seeking mental health treatment. The full model containing the 4 independent variables was statistically significant per the results of the binary logistic regression analysis. This finding indicates that the model reliably distinguished between respondents who reported seeking and not seeking mental health treatment. The results of the binary logistic regression analysis indicated education was the only independent variable that made a uniquely significant contribution to the model, with participants with 12 years or more of education more likely to seek mental health treatment. The implications for positive social change include the potential to provide communities and health care providers knowledge of the factors that influence whether Mexican Americans with depression access mental health

Mapping Varieties of Industrial Relations: Eurofound\u27s Analytical Framework Applied

    Get PDF
Eurofound’s 2016 report Mapping key dimensions of industrial relations identified four key dimensions of industrial relations: industrial democracy, industrial competitiveness, social justice, and quality of work and employment. This report builds upon that earlier study, developing a dashboard of 45 indicators to assess how and to what extent the conceptual framework of these key dimensions can be applied at national level. The indicators were tested across the Member States by Eurofound’s Network of European Correspondents and show reasonable accuracy when used to map the predominant features and trends of the national industrial relations systems. The study confirms that a dashboard of indicators that can accurately measure and summarise the complex reality of industrial relations across the EU is a valuable tool for comparative research and a useful instrument for supporting policymakers, social partners and stakeholders. The report sets out a range of options for further developing this conceptual approach

Formation of oligopeptides in high yield under simple programmable conditions

    Get PDF
Many high-yielding reactions for forming peptide bonds have been developed but these are complex, requiring activated amino-acid precursors and heterogeneous supports. Herein we demonstrate the programmable one-pot dehydration–hydration condensation of amino acids forming oligopeptide chains in around 50% yield. A digital recursive reactor system was developed to investigate this process, performing these reactions with control over parameters such as temperature, number of cycles, cycle duration, initial monomer concentration and initial pH. Glycine oligopeptides up to 20 amino acids long were formed with very high monomer-to-oligomer conversion, and the majority of these products comprised three amino acid residues or more. Having established the formation of glycine homo-oligopeptides, we then demonstrated the co-condensation of glycine with eight other amino acids (Ala, Asp, Glu, His, Lys, Pro, Thr and Val), incorporating a range of side-chain functionality

Topological structures of the resistive pressure gradient turbulence with averaged poloidal flow

    Get PDF
When a significant averaged poloidal flow is generated by the resistive pressure-gradient-driven turbulence the topological properties of the flow structures can change in some radial regions where the shear flow is large. We have applied the topological analysis approach that we have developed (2013 J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 46 375501) to this situation and found that in addition to the filamentary vortex structures there are deformed toroidal structures that seem to act as transport barriers. Analysis of all these structures is presented here. This research was sponsored by DGICYT (Dirección General de Investigación Científica y Técnica) of Spain under Project No. ENE2012-38620-C02-02. Marriage validity with foreign nationals. The case of moroccan citizens Abstract: Over the past years the number of one or both prospective spouses are Moroccan citizens has increased in Spain. The aim of this paper is to analyse the main difficulties detected today in order to the validity of the marriage celebrated according to the civil or religious ceremony (Muslim rite) -in both Spain or Marroc-, as well as the legal recognition with the compulsory registration in the Spanish civil Registry. Keywords: Marriage celebration, Muslin rite, Private international law.

Advertising translation and symbolic violence: the posttranslations of Western beauty standards in Estée Lauder campaigns

In global times, where languages are hybrid and visual, it is vital to broaden the definition of translation to study current and new challenges, as the ones posed by advertising. Taking the last theories in Translation Studies, and the concept of post-translation coined by Gentzler as a key notion in our methodology, our aim is to analyse the rewritings of women in European advertising of Estée Lauder; understanding the female body as a text and a semiotic sign which communicates meanings and ideologies, and which is, therefore, subject to translation. Through an analysis of current campaigns, in terms of year of publication as well as language-based between Spanish, English and French versions of the ads, we will observe how magazines aimed at women and the ads included construct a homogenised, stable and controlled identity, which makes of the female body a site of pressure and constant dissatisfaction, a space where power is represented. On those grounds, another aim is to expose the symbolic violence perpetuated by these campaigns, as long as they promote impossible thin and young bodies and represent only certain races, which ends up with a considerable number of women feeling that they deviate from the Western beauty canon, a beauty standard which is taken as an original to be translated into other peripheric cultures and bodies

Maternal Geohelminth Infections Are Associated with an Increased Susceptibility to Geohelminth Infection in Children: A Case-Control Study

Background: Children of mothers infected with soil-transmitted helminths (STH) may have an increased susceptibility to STH infection. Methods and Findings: We did a case-control study nested in a birth cohort in Ecuador. Data from 1,004 children aged 7 months to 3 years were analyzed. Cases were defined as children with Ascaris lumbricoides and/or Trichuris trichiura, controls without. Exposure was defined as maternal infection with A. lumbricoides and/or T. trichiura, detected during the third trimester of pregnancy. The analysis was restricted to households with a documented infection to control for infection risk. Children of mothers with STH infections had a greater risk of infection compared to children of uninfected mothers (adjusted OR 2.61, 95% CI: 1.88–3.63, p,0.001). This effect was particularly strong in children of mothers with both STH infections (adjusted OR: 5.91, 95% CI: 3.55–9.81, p,0.001). Newborns of infected mothers had greater levels of plasma IL-10 than those of uninfected mothers (p = 0.033), and there was evidence that cord blood IL-10 was increased among newborns who became infected later in childhood (p = 0.060). Conclusion: Our data suggest that maternal STH infections increase susceptibility to infection during early childhood, an effect that was associated with elevated IL-10 in cord plasma
