    Get PDF
Big Data has significant impact in developing functional smart cities and supporting modern societies. In this paper, we investigate the importance of Big Data in modern life and economy, and discuss challenges arising from Big Data utilization. Different computational intelligence techniques have been considered as tools for Big Data analytics. We also explore the powerful combination of Big Data and Computational Intelligence (CI) and identify a number of areas, where novel applications in real world smart city problems can be developed by utilizing these powerful tools and techniques. We present a case study for intelligent transportation in the context of a smart city, and a novel data modelling methodology based on a biologically inspired universal generative modelling approach called Hierarchical Spatial-Temporal State Machine (HSTSM). We further discuss various implications of policy, protection, valuation and commercialization related to Big Data, its applications and deployment

Pleural effusion as a manifestation of multiple myeloma

    Get PDF
Multiple myeloma is a clonal B-cell malignancy, characterised by proliferation of plasma cells and secretion of paraproteins. These plasma cells accumulate predominantly in the bone marrow; rarely, they invade other areas, especially the thorax. Myeloma presenting with a pleural effusion is rare and reported in only 6% of patients with myeloma. Such patients generally present late and have a poor prognosis. Here, we describe a patient presenting with a lung mass, renal failure and a massive unilateral pleural effusion due to multiple myeloma who was treated successfully

The External, Internal Factor and Ecosystem Services to Support Mangrove Rehabilitation Planning in North Coast of Jakarta

The mangrove ecosystem on North Coast of Jakarta has many services and function both of ecology, social and economic function and services, including the tidal flooding reduction, land subsidence reduction, pollution reduction, ecotourism and others. However, the mangrove ecosystem in North Coast of Jakarta Mangroves are being badly damaged, so require effort and activity to rehabilitate. This research aimed to develop  rehabilitation strategy of mangrove ecosystem in North Coast of Jakarta to reduce coastal disaster and to support ecosystem services. The methods of this research used IFAS, EFAS analysis and Buchard analysis. The results showed that the ecosystem services of mangrove ecosystem were are ecotourism, conservation, wildlife reserves, reduction of tidal flooding, abrasion and accretion, reduction of intrusion, reduction of land subsidence, economic income, fishing and fishpond activities, pond activities, and social benefits. The strategy of mangrove rehabilitation was weakness-opportunity strategy (minimalizing weakness,  taking advantage of opportunities, and avoid threats. The strategies of mangrove rehabilitation plaaning were mangrove rehabilitation, mangrove revitalization, support creative economy, developing greenbelt, increasing human resources and developing blue carbo

Prevalence of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease among Diabetic Patients at Sharif Medical City Hospital, Lahore, Pakistan

Background: Diabetes mellitus has been linked to various gastrointestinal motility disorders, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).This study aimed to determine the proportion of GERD in patients with diabetes mellitus.Method: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at the medical outpatient department of Sharif Medical City Hospital, Lahore, from October to December, 2020. Patients previously diagnosed with type II diabetes were included using non-probability consecutive sampling, and the GERDQ questionnaire was used to determine the frequency. IBM SPSS statistics version 23 was used for the analysis of data. Results: Of the 273 participants, 183 (67.0%) were male and the mean age was 51.13±12.8 years. The mean duration of diabetes was 6.97±4.76 years and oral hypoglycemic agents were used by 133 (48.7%) participants. Overall, 133 (48.7%) of the participants had GERD with a mean GERDQ score of 10.8(±1.4).Conclusion: Almost half (48.7%) of the participants have GERD; the most common symptom is regurgitation of stomach contents. Awareness should be raised, and early screening should be done to prevent long-term complications.

COMPREHENSIVE STUDY ANALYSIS OF NOVEL MAPPING MULTIPLEXING (NMM) TECHNIQUE FOR LONG HAUL OPTICAL FIBER TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS

A new multiplexing technique based on mapping method called Novel Mapping Multiplexing (NMM) is proposed and well demonstrated. It is reported that spectral width occupied by 40 Gb/s NMM is 40 GHz with spectral efficiency of 1bit/sec/Hz that shows a clear advantage over the conventional NRZ-OOK and RZ-OOK with same data rate of 40Gbits/sec having spectral efficiency of 0.5bit/sec/Hz and 0.25bit/sec/Hz respectively. This technique features better chromatic dispersion (CD) tolerance and Q-Factor because of its narrow spectral width

Prostate cancer metastasis to cervical node chain-an unusual clinic-pathological finding

Prostate carcinoma is one of the most common cancers in males all around the world. Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma is amongst the leading carcinoma (HNSCC) in men especially in the sub-continent. There are around 150 lymph nodes on either side in the neck and cervical lymph nodes are a common site for head and neck malignancies to metastasize however carcinoma of prostate may in rare cases metastasize to cervical chain, therefore warranting a neck dissection. In case of unknown primary of head and neck extensive work up is required to find the primary site. Our case provided a similar picture with a single enlarged node which on biopsy to our surprise revealed adenocarcinoma of prostate

Performance improvement in polymer electrolytic membrane fuel cell based on nonlinear control strategies—A comprehensive study

    Get PDF
A Polymer Electrolytic Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) is an efficient power device for automobiles, but its efficiency and life span depend upon its air delivery system. To ensure improved performance of PEMFC, the air delivery system must ensure proper regulation of Oxygen Excess Ratio (OER). This paper proposes two nonlinear control strategies, namely Integral Sliding Mode Control (ISMC) and Fast Terminal ISMC (FTISMC). Both the controllers are designed to control the OER at a constant level under load disturbances while avoiding oxygen starvation. The derived controllers are implemented in MATLAB/ Simulink. The corresponding simulation results depict that FTISMC has faster tracking performance and lesser fluctuations due to load disturbances in output net power, stack voltage/power, error tracking, OER, and compressor motor voltage. Lesser fluctuations in these parameters ensure increased efficiency and thus extended life of a PEMFC. The results are also compared with super twisting algorithm STA to show the effectiveness of the proposed techniques. ISMC and FTISMC yield 7% and 20% improved performance as compared to STA. The proposed research finds potential applications in hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric vehicles

Software has gained immense importance in our everyday lifeand is handling each and every aspect of today's technologicalworld. The idea of software at initial phase was implemented bya very precise minority of individual and now it's everywherewhether one's personal life or an organization .Financiallystrong organization and people who can purchase this bounty oftechnological era can fulfill their desires efficiently. For sure it's not a generalized case that one is financially strong and caneasily afford the desired software. There are numerous userswho cannot do so. Open source software has a way out for theseusers it provides them the same facilities and functionalities asin their equivalent software irrespective of any financialpressure. So the financially constrained personals ororganization can make use of open source software forachievement of their desired tasks. In this research paper ananalysis of open source software has been presented byproviding a brief comparison of Ubuntu as an emerging highquality open source modern operating system with well knownMicrosoft windows operating systemComment: 7 pages, 3 table
