    Gully Evolution in the Upper Delaware River Basin Northeastern Kansas

    A small gully network developed across a pasture in the Dissected Till Plain of northeastern Kansas was monitored for one year to assess gully evolution in non-loessial materials. The objectives of this investigation were to identify stable and unstable drainage elements within the gully network; identify zones of net erosion and deposition; estimate the volume of sediment removed or deposited during the monitoring period; determine rates of headcut advancement; determine processes that advance and widen gullies, and to determine the historic development of the gully network. Portions of the gully network were measured after every rain event exceeding 1.5 cm in a 24 hour period. A series of reference points and/or transects were established at selected gully elements to determine headcut advancement rates and detect changes in gully volume. Historic growth rates were determined by examining aerial photographs. Results of this investigation indicate that the upper reach was a zone of net erosion, whereas the lower and middle reaches were zones of net sedimentation. Although considerable erosion occurred during the monitoring period, with sidewalls accounting for 92.0% of all erosion, sedimentation was the dominant process, resulting in a net decrease in gully volume of about 2.77m3. It is likely that a portion of the sediment was contributed by adjacent slopes that are experiencing sheet and rill erosion. Gully headcut advance ranged from 4 to 69 cm/yr, with advancement apparently controlled by surface deposits and soils. Headcuts migrated fairly rapidly when advancing into former gullies that are filled with sediment. The gully fills are marked by permeable, low strength silt. However, headcuts advancing into the in-situ glacial till had slower advancement rates due to till having a higher clay content, thereby imparting greater resistance to erosion. Headcuts migrating into gully fills were subject to advancement by failure at the toe of headwalls, and by toppling, whereas headcuts migrating into the till-derived soils advanced primarily by rill enlargement. Gully widening resulted from sidewall failure, which was largely controlled by soil moisture conditions, undercutting, and cattle. Examination of aerial photographs suggest that portions of the gully network have rejuvenated and infilled since 1937. This evidence is supported by the existence of late­ Holocene gully fills at the study site. Cut-and-fill cycles play an important role in river basin evolution, and appear to be an important factor of gully evolution at the study site. Headcuts migrating into gully fills can be expected to advance quickly. Hence, soils and terrain analysis may be used to locate gully fills, allowing land managers to isolate areas prone to rapid gully development

    Adverse effects of routine bovine health treatments containing triclabendazole and synthetic pyrethroids on the abundance of dipteran larvae in bovine faeces

    Macrocyclic lactone treatments for livestock can have detrimental effects on the arthropod populations in livestock faeces. For the last twenty years, avoidance of these products has been a standard recommendation on livestock farms that are managed for wildlife by the Royal Society for Protection of Birds (RSPB). However, the continued decline in the populations of birds (in particular the red-billed chough Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax) that are dependent on dung invertebrates on islands in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland prompted us to investigate the effects of livestock treatments that are commonly used on these islands. We conducted a replicated field plot study over two years to quantify the effects of livestock treatments containing copper, deltamethrin and triclabendazole on invertebrate density in pooled, artificial faecal pats on the island of Islay. We found that the density of arthropod larvae was significantly reduced by the triclabendazole and deltamethrin treatments in both years and by as much as 86% when the treatments were combined. Copper-containing boluses did not consistently affect abundance of arthropod larvae. These results suggest that veterinary treatment of livestock might contribute to a reduction in the food supply of chough

    Does One Size Fit All? Drug Resistance and Standard Treatments: Results of Six Tuberculosis Programmes in Former Soviet Countries.

    SETTING: After the collapse of the Soviet Union, countries in the region faced a dramatic increase in tuberculosis cases and the emergence of drug resistance. OBJECTIVE: To discuss the relevance of the DOTS strategy in settings with a high prevalence of drug resistance. DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of one-year treatment outcomes of short-course chemotherapy (SCC) and results of drug susceptibility testing (DST) surveys of six programmes located in the former Soviet Union: Kemerovo prison, Russia; Abkhasia, Georgia; Nagorno-Karabagh, Azerbaijan; Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan; Dashoguz Velayat, Turkmenistan; and South Kazakhstan Oblast, Kazakhstan. Results are reported for new and previously treated smear-positive patients. RESULTS: Treatment outcomes of 3090 patients and DST results of 1383 patients were collected. Treatment success rates ranged between 87% and 61%, in Nagorno-Karabagh and Kemerovo, respectively, and failure rates between 7% and 23%. Any drug resistance ranged between 66% and 31% in the same programmes. MDR rates ranged between 28% in Karakalpakstan and Kemerovo prison and 4% in Nagorno-Karabagh. CONCLUSION: These results show the limits of SCC in settings with a high prevalence of drug resistance. They demonstrate that adapting treatment according to resistance patterns, access to reliable culture, DST and good quality second-line drugs are necessary

    Method of derivation of phenomenological thermodynamic potential of solid solutions is proposed in which the interaction of the order parameters of constituents is introduced through the account of elastic strain due to misfit of the lattice parameters of the end-members. The validity of the method is demonstrated for Ba(x)Sr(1-x)TiO3 system being a typical example of ferroelectric solid solution. Its phase diagram is determined using experimental data for the coefficients in the phenomenological potentials of SrTiO3 and BaTiO3. In the phase diagram of the Ba(x)Sr(1-x)TiO3 system for small Ba concentration, there are a tricritical point and two multiphase points one of which is associated with up to 6 possible phases.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

    Characteristics of drug-resistant tuberculosis in Abkhazia (Georgia), a high-prevalence area in Eastern Europe

    Although multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis (TB) is a major public health problem in Eastern Europe, the factors contributing to emergence, spread and containment of MDR-TB are not well defined. Here, we analysed the characteristics of drug-resistant TB in a cross-sectional study in Abkhazia (Georgia) between 2003 and 2005, where standard short-course chemotherapy is supplemented with individualized drug-resistance therapy. Drug susceptibility testing (DST) and molecular typing were carried out for Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex strains from consecutive smear-positive TB patients. Out of 366 patients, 60.4% were resistant to any first-line drugs and 21% had MDR-TB. Overall, 25% of all strains belong to the Beijing genotype, which was found to be strongly associated with the risk of MDR-TB (OR 25.9, 95% CI 10.2-66.0) and transmission (OR 2.8, 95% CI 1.6-5.0). One dominant MDR Beijing clone represents 23% of all MDR-TB cases. The level of MDR-TB did not decline during the study period, coinciding with increasing levels of MDR Beijing strains among previously treated cases. Standard chemotherapy plus individualized drug-resistance therapy, guided by conventional DST, might be not sufficient to control MDR-TB in Eastern Europe in light of the spread of "highly transmissible" MDR Beijing strains circulating in the community

    It's the Motivation Stupid!

    This paper attempts to explain the success of secondary currencies. Success is defined as the degree to which the initiators of these currencies manage to reach their original goals. In order to do so, we draw on two explanatory factors: the motivation of a currency’s founder and the degree of organization. We employed a combination of qualitative interviews, secondary literature review and standardized questionnaires with seven secondary currency projects in Croatia (CROM), Germany (KannWas, Engelgeld), Greece (Ovolos, TEM) and the United Kingdom (Bristol Pound, Brixton Pound). The main findings are that projects which pursue several different motivations are more successful than those with fewer goals. As for the degree of organization, projects which score high on all dimensions of organization are correlated with higher project success. Building on this we propose a typology of two groups: Type 1 cases have low diversity of motivation and organization (CROM and Engelgeld) and Type 2 cases have high diversity of motivation and organization (Bristol Pound, Brixton Pound, and TEM). The two remaining cases, the Ovolos and the KannWas cannot be clearly assigned to any of the types. The "motivation-organization typology" can guide future research on the motivation of founding and using secondary currencies

    Carboxypeptidase 4 gene variants and early-onset intermediate-to-high risk prostate cancer

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Carboxypeptidase 4 <it>(CPA4) </it>is a zinc-dependent metallocarboxypeptidase on chromosome 7q32 in a region linked to prostate cancer aggressiveness. CPA4 is involved in the histone hyperacetylation pathway and may modulate the function of peptides that affect the growth and regulation of prostate epithelial cells. We examined the association between genetic variation in <it>CPA4 </it>and intermediate-to-high risk prostate cancer.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We studied 1012 men (506 cases and 506 controls) from Cleveland, Ohio. All cases had Gleason ≥ 7, clinical stage ≥ T2c, or PSA ≥ 10 ng/mL at diagnosis. Six <it>CPA4 </it>single-nucleotide polymorphisms were genotyped, and evaluated for their relation to prostate cancer. We also evaluated whether CPA4 variants influence risk of disease among men diagnosed at an earlier age (< 66 years).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The nonsynonymous coding SNP (rs2171492, Cys303Gly) in <it>CPA4 </it>was associated with an increased risk of aggressive prostate cancer among younger patients (< 66 years). Specifically, men carrying the TT genotype had an approximately two-fold increased risk for being diagnosed with intermediate-to-high risk disease (Odds Ratio = 1.83, p = 0.04). In the overall population (all ages) none of the <it>CPA4 </it>SNPs demonstrated a statistically significant association with prostate cancer.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Coding variation in <it>CPA4 </it>may confer increased risk of intermediate-to-high risk prostate cancer among younger patients. Further work is needed to identify the functional aspects of this variation and understand its biological effects on prostate cancer. Such work may translate into more precise screening of higher risk individuals as well as guiding clinicians and patients toward earlier and more definitive treatment modalities in patients genetically identified as higher risk.</p

    Necklace-structured high-harmonic generation for low-divergence, soft x-ray harmonic combs with tunable line spacing

    The extreme nonlinear optical process of high-harmonic generation (HHG) makes it possible to map the properties of a laser beam onto a radiating electron wave function and, in turn, onto the emitted x-ray light. Bright HHG beams typically emerge from a longitudinal phased distribution of atomic-scale quantum antennae. Here, we form a transverse necklace-shaped phased array of linearly polarized HHG emitters, where orbital angular momentum conservation allows us to tune the line spacing and divergence properties of extreme ultraviolet and soft x-ray high-harmonic combs. The on-axis HHG emission has extremely low divergence, well below that obtained when using Gaussian driving beams, which further decreases with harmonic order. This work provides a new degree of freedom for the design of harmonic combs—particularly in the soft x-ray regime, where very limited options are available.
