    The relationship between visual function and performance in rifle shooting for athletes with vision impairment

    Background: Paralympic sports provide opportunities for those who have an impairment that might otherwise be a barrier to participation in regular sporting competition. Rifle shooting represents an ideal sport for persons with vision impairment (VI) because the direction of the rifle can be guided by auditory information when vision is impaired. However, it is unknown whether those with some remaining vision when shooting with auditory guidance would be at an advantage when compared with those with no vision at all. If this were the case then it would be necessary for those with and without remaining vision to compete in separate classes of competition. Materials and method: The associations between shooting performance and 3 measures of visual function thought important for shooting were assessed for 10 elite VI shooters currently classified as VI. A conventional audiogram was also obtained. Results: The sample size, though small, included the majority of European VI shooters competing at this level. The relationships between visual functions and performance confirmed that individuals with residual vision had no advantage over those without vision when auditory guidance was available. Auditory function was within normal limits for age, and showed no relationship with performance. Summary: The findings suggest that rifle-shooting athletes with VI are able to use auditory information to overcome their impairment and optimise performance. Paralympic competition should be structured in a way that ensures that all shooters who qualify to compete in VI shooting participate within the same class irrespective of their level of VI

    The role of corporates in creating sustainable Olympic legacies

    The Olympic Games is a major stimulus for increased tourism. In recent years there have been greater calls for this and other mega events to leave sustainable positive legacies for the host city, partly to offset the massive cost of hosting. To date, little consideration has been afforded to the role of corporates might play in contributing to event legacies. This gap is compounded by the lack of research examining stakeholder engagement in legacy planning more generally. This paper adopts Holmes, Hughes, Mair and Carlsen’s (2015) sustainable event legacy timeline to conceptualise how corporates through the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives of sponsorship and employee volunteering can engage across the Olympic event planning cycle to generate volunteering legacies. Drawing upon a comparative study of the Sydney 2000 and London 2012 Olympic Games, tentative evidence of corporate engagement was noted but for the most part it was fragmented and CSR initiatives primarily focused on the immediate planning and delivery stages of the event cycle. The paper advances new knowledge of how volunteering legacies can be generated through the best practice engagement of corporates as key stakeholders involved in legacy planning and governance across the Olympic planning cycle

    Initial steps towards an evidence-based classification system for golfers with a physical impairment

    Purpose: The present narrative review aims to make a first step towards an evidence-based classification system in handigolf following the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). It intends to create a conceptual framework of classification for handigolf and an agenda for future research. Method: Pubmed was searched on three themes: “Classification in Paralympic sports”, “Performance determining factors in golf” and “Impact of impairments on golf performance”. IPC-regulations were gathered on the IPC-website and their official publications. Results: In developing a classification system conform IPC-regulations, the main challenge is to identify the activity limitation caused by the impairment, not influenced by training, talent or motivation. Timing, accuracy and control, work per joint, range of motion, balance and flexibility are important performance determining factors in abled-bodied golf and should be considered when determining activity limitations in handigolf. Only five articles on handigolf were found, mainly addressing the asymmetric golf movement. Based on the present review, a conceptual framework for classification was developed, while a future research agenda was designated. The conceptual framework presents factors that are essential for sports performance categorized under “technology”, “interface” and “athlete characteristics”. It also includes impairment related factors essential for determining eligibility and classification. Ideally, measures to be used during classification need to be resistant against training, natural development of the athlete’s talent and motivational changes. Conclusions: The conceptual framework and a multidimensional scientific research agenda will support further development of the knowledge base required for an evidence-based classification in handigolf, including multi-level analysis of player statistics, experimental analyses of biomechanics and modeling studies.Implications for Rehabilitation The main challenge in developing an evidence-based classification system conform IPC-regulations is defining eligibility criteria and sport classes based on activity limitation caused by only the impairment and not affected by training, talent and motivation. It is expected that a transparent classification system, a lively competition and admission to the Paralympic program will further promote participation in disabled golf. Timing, accuracy and control, work per joint, range of motion, balance and flexibility are of greater importance for golf performance in able-bodied golfers and expected to be of interest to incorporate in classification for handigolf. Side and level of amputation influence activity limitation in the asymmetric golf movement, and should be incorporated in classification. The proposed conceptual framework is fundamental to the research agenda that must further generate the knowledge-base to determine activity limitations caused by different impairments in handigolf and may serve as a guideline for other Paralympic sports in the development of evidence-based classification

    Prevalence of sports-related injuries in Paralympic judo: an exploratory study

    Objectives The aim was to assess the 1-year retrospective prevalence of athletes reporting a sports-related injury among Paralympic judokas with visual impairment (VI), and to identify any associations between injury, vision class, gender and weight category. Design Cross-sectional retrospective study. Methods The data were collected through an adapted questionnaire given to athletes with VI during an international training camp. Forty-five Paralympic judokas answered the questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and chi-square statistics (p < 0.05) were used to analyse the data. Spearman’s correlation was used to analyse multiple injuries. Results Thirty-eight of the athletes reported an injury, giving a 1-year prevalence of 84% (95% CI 71-93). Male athletes reported significantly more injuries compared to female athletes (p = 0.023). Over two thirds of the injuries (71%; 95% CI 55-83) had a traumatic onset. The majority of injuries (74%; 95% CI 58-85) occurred during judo training, and in the standing technique tachi waza (82%; 95% CI 66-91). The shoulder was the most single affected body location (29%). Forty-five percent of the injuries led to a time loss from sport for more than three weeks, and 40% of judokas reported multiple injuries. Conclusions The results from this study demonstrate a high prevalence of mainly traumatic and severe sports-related injuries amongst athletes with VI participating in Paralympic judo. A first step towards prevention could be to minimize the time in tachi waza. However, to improve sports safety and to develop effective strategies for injury prevention, more comprehensive epidemiological studies, and also technical studies assessing injury mechanisms are warranted

    Classifying motor coordination impairment in Para swimmers with brain injury

    © 2018 Sports Medicine Australia Objectives: The International Paralympic Committee has mandated that International Sport Federations develop sport-specific classification systems that are evidence-based. This study examined the predictive and convergent validity of instrumented tapping tasks to classify motor coordination impairments in Para swimming. Design: Cross-sectional. Methods: Thirty non-disabled participants and twenty-one Para swimmers with brain injury completed several instrumented tapping tasks as an assessment of upper and lower limb motor coordination. Para swimmers also completed a maximal freestyle swim to obtain a performance measure. The predictive and convergent validity of instrumented tapping tasks was examined by establishing differences in test measures between participants with and without brain injury and defining the strength of association between test measures and maximal freestyle swim speed in Para swimmers, respectively. Results: Random forest successfully classified 96% of participants with and without brain injury using test measures derived from instrumented tapping tasks. Most test measures had moderate to high correlations (r = 0.54 to 0.72; p < 0.01) with maximal freestyle swim speed and collectively explained up to 72% of the variance in maximal freestyle swim performance in Para swimmers with brain injury. Conclusions: The results of this study evidence the predictive and convergent validity of instrumented tapping tasks to classify motor coordination impairments in Para swimmers with brain injury. These tests can be included in revised Para swimming classification to improve the objectivity and transparency in determining athlete eligibility and sport class for these Para athletes

    Protecting or undermining the integrity of sport? The science and politics of the McLaren report

    This study interrogates the ramiïŹcations for the integrity of sport of the McLaren Report (2016a) into doping allegations concerning the Sochi Olympics. Using an evidence-based approach to policymaking, the main claims of the report are subjected to scrutiny. The analysis suggests that McLaren’s report seriously undermines the integrity of Olympic sport for four main reasons: (i) Contrary to the historic neutrality of World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), it took a political stance by implicating a nation state in wrong- doing without presenting suïŹƒcient evidence; (ii) WADA undermined trust in the decision-making process concern- ing the enforcement of compliance with its Code by using a highly questionable methodology for gathering information; (iii) WADA exposed its own inadequacies by allowing top athletes to use banned substances, and (iv) WADA undermined its main mandate as an enforcer of compliance by turning this global organisation into an ‘on-demand police service’. We conclude thus: even if you think you are doing the right thing, you must not do the right thing with the wrong process because right is also enshrined in the process.
