Hyperspectral Assessment of Ecophysiological Functioning for Diagnostics of Crops and Vegetation
Development of a locus-specific, co-dominant SCAR marker for assisted-selection of the Sw-5 (Tospovirus resistance) gene cluster in a wide range of tomato accessions
The best levels of broad-spectrum Tospovirus resistance reported in tomatoes thus far are conferred by the Sw-5 locus. This locus contains at least five paralogues (denoted Sw-5a through Sw-5e), of which Sw-5b represents the actual resistance gene. Here we evaluated a panel of seven PCR primer pairs matching different sequences within a genomic region spanning the Sw-5a and Sw-5b gene cluster. Primer efficiency evaluation was done employing tomato isolines with and without the Sw-5 locus. One primer pair produced a single and co-dominant polymorphism between susceptible and resistant isolines. Sequence analysis of these amplicons indicated that they were specific for the Sw-5 locus and their differences were due to insertions/deletions. The polymorphic SCAR amplicon encompass a conserved sequence of the promoter region of the functional Sw-5b gene, being located in the position -31 from its open reading frame. This primer pair was also evaluated in field assays and with a collection of accessions known to be either susceptible or resistant to tospoviruses. An almost complete correlation was found between resistance under greenhouse/field conditions and the presence of the marker. Therefore, this primer pair is a very useful tool in marker-assisted selection systems in a large range of tomato accessions
The Water-ice Feature in Near-infrared Disk-scattered Light around HD 142527:Micron-sized Icy Grains Lifted up to the Disk Surface?
We study the m scattering feature of water ice detected in the outer
disk of HD 142527 by performing radiative transfer simulations. We show that an
ice mass abundance at the outer disk surface of HD 142527 is much lower than
estimated in a previous study. It is even lower than inferred from far-infrared
ice observations, implying ice disruption at the disk surface. Next, we
demonstrate that a polarization fraction of disk-scattered light varies across
the ice-band wavelengths depending on ice grain properties; hence, polarimetric
spectra would be another tool for characterizing water-ice properties. Finally,
we argue that the observed reddish disk-scattered light is due to grains with a
few microns in size. To explain the presence of such grains at the disk
surface, we need a mechanism that can efficiently oppose dust settling. If we
assume turbulent mixing, our estimate requires ,
where is a non-dimensional parameter describing the vertical diffusion
coefficient of grains. Future observations probing gas kinematics would be

On the sample size dependence of the critical current density in MgB superconductors
Sample size dependent critical current density has been observed in magnesium
diboride superconductors. At high fields, larger samples provide higher
critical current densities, while at low fields, larger samples give rise to
lower critical current densities. The explanation for this surprising result is
proposed in this study based on the electric field generated in the
superconductors. The dependence of the current density on the sample size has
been derived as a power law ( is the factor
characterizing curve ). This dependence provides one with
a new method to derive the factor and can also be used to determine the

Biochemical parameters of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) after transport with eugenol or essential oil of Lippia alba added to the water
The transport of live fish is a routine practice in aquaculture and constitutes a considerable source of stress to the animals. The addition of anesthetic to the water used for fish transport can prevent or mitigate the deleterious effects of transport stress. This study investigated the effects of the addition of eugenol (EUG) (1.5 or 3.0 mu L L-1) and essential oil of Lippia alba (EOL) (10 or 20 mu L L-1) on metabolic parameters (glycogen, lactate and total protein levels) in liver and muscle, acetylcholinesterase activity (AChE) in muscle and brain, and the levels of protein carbonyl (PC), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and nonprotein thiol groups (NPSH) and activity of glutathione-S-transferase in the liver of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen; Quoy and Gaimard, 1824) transported for four hours in plastic bags (loading density of 169.2 g L-1). The addition of various concentrations of EUG (1.5 or 3.0 mu L L-1) and EOL (10 or 20 mu L L-1) to the transport water is advisable for the transportation of silver catfish, since both concentrations of these substances increased the levels of NPSH antioxidant and decreased the TBARS levels in the liver. Magnetic spin excitations in Mn doped GaAs : A model study
We provide a quantitative theoretical model study of the dynamical magnetic
properties of optimally annealed GaMnAs. This model has already
been shown to reproduce accurately the Curie temperatures for
GaMnAs. Here we show that the calculated spin stiffness are in
excellent agreement with those which were obtained from ab-initio based
studies. In addition, an overall good agreement is also found with available
experimental data. We have also evaluated the magnon density of states and the
typical density of states from which the "mobility edge", separating the
extended from localized magnon states, was determined. The power of the model
lies in its ability to be generalized for a broad class of diluted magnetic
semiconductor materials, thus it bridges the gap between first principle

Monte Carlo simulations of an impurity band model for III-V diluted magnetic semiconductors
We report the results of a Monte Carlo study of a model of (III,Mn)V diluted
magnetic semiconductors which uses an impurity band description of carriers
coupled to localized Mn spins and is applicable for carrier densities below and
around the metal-insulator transition. In agreement with mean field studies, we
find a transition to a ferromagnetic phase at low temperatures. We compare our
results for the magnetic properties with the mean field approximation, as well
as with experiments, and find favorable qualitative agreement with the latter.
The local Mn magnetization below the Curie temperature is found to be spatially
inhomogeneous, and strongly correlated with the local carrier charge density at
the Mn sites. The model contains fermions and classical spins and hence we
introduce a perturbative Monte Carlo scheme to increase the speed of our

ALMA deep field in SSA22: Blindly detected CO emitters and [C ii] emitter candidates
We report the identification of four millimeter line-emitting galaxies with the Atacama Large Milli/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in SSA22 Field (ADF22). We analyze the ALMA 1.1-mm survey data, with an effective survey area of 5 arcmin2, frequency ranges of 253.1–256.8 and 269.1–272.8 GHz, angular resolution of 0 ′′. .′′ 7 and rms noise of 0.8 mJy beam−1 at 36 km s−1 velocity resolution. We detect four line-emitter candidates with significance levels above 6σ. We identify one of the four sources as a CO(9–8) emitter at z = 3.1 in a member of the proto-cluster known in this field. Another line emitter with an optical counterpart is likely a CO(4–3) emitter at z = 0.7. The other two sources without any millimeter continuum or optical/near-infrared counterpart are likely to be [C II] emitter candidates at z = 6.0 and 6.5. The equivalent widths of the [C II] candidates are consistent with those of confirmed high-redshift [C II] emitters and candidates, and are a factor of 10 times larger than that of the CO(9–8) emitter detected in this search. The [C II] luminosity of the candidates are 4–7 × 108 L⊙. The star formation rates (SFRs) of these sources are estimated to be 10–20 M⊙ yr−1 if we adopt an empirical [C II] luminosity–SFR relation. One of them has a relatively low S/N ratio, but shows features characteristic of emission lines. Assuming that at least one of the two candidates is a [C II] emitter, we derive a lower limit of [C II]-based star formation rate density (SFRD) at z ∼ 6. The resulting value of >10−2 M⊙ yr−1 Mpc−3 is consistent with the dust-uncorrected UV-based SFRD. Future millimeter/submillimeter surveys can be used to detect a number of high-redshift line emitters, with which to study the star formation history in the early universe
