Mobile diasporas, postcolonial identities: the Green Line in Cyprus
This paper explores the scope for understanding postcolonial and hybrid identities through the theory of ontological security in International Relations. It examines the circulation of identity for a dispersed postcolonial population, namely Cypriots. This circulation happens amongst a deterritorialised public, through media and movement of people. It carries meaning that is formative of the identity of the diaspora and of the identity of the home state, implicating both in a complex and relational ontological security comprising identity, memory, state and society. The Green Line dividing North from South in Cyprus represents the bifurcation of the island, rupturing the possibility of a territorially unified Cypriot identity. The line also represents a rupturing of contiguous ethnic identities, marking the creation of refugee populations and Cypriot diasporas. The Green Line is both a physical location and circulating symbol of ontological insecurity. On one hand, the Green Line marks the creation of Cypriot refugees and diasporas. On the other, it marks a gateway to Europe for asylum seekers attempting to enter the Southern part of the island. I theorise the Green Line as an emblem of ontological insecurity whose meaning is (re)constituted in the lived experience of Cypriot diaspora and migrants seeking security, revealing a hybrid and fluid identity

Everyday Ontological Security: Emotion and Migration in British Soaps
Work on affect has made significant contributions to how international relations (IR) scholars understand the high politics of international affairs, capturing political reactions to the horrific, the spectacular, and the exceptional. However, the turn to affect has been less inclined to offer comprehensive insight into the importance of emotion in banal or everyday international politics. The theory of ontological security can offer such insight as it attends to experiences of the everyday, particularly through the discursive production of identity. Identity might be disrupted at moments of spectacular or exceptional events that call it into question but is equally made and remade in the discursive production of everyday life. This research focuses on the latter, analyzing the reproduction of the international in the everyday through the vehicle of British soap operas Coronation Street and Emmerdale, both of which introduced storylines about migrant workers in the late 2000s. British soaps are designed to be culturally proximate and incorporate didactic messages. Secondary Rayleigh-Taylor type Instabilities in the Reconnection Exhaust Jet as a Mechanism for Supra-Arcade Downflows
Supra-arcade downflows (hereafter referred to as SADs) are low-emission,
elongated, finger-like features usually observed in active-region coronae above
post-eruption flare arcades. Observations exhibit downward moving SADs
intertwined with bright upward moving spikes. Whereas SADs are dark voids,
spikes are brighter, denser structures. Although SADs have been observed for
decades, the mechanism of formation of SADs remains an open issue. In our
three-dimensional resistive magnetohydrodynamic simulations, we demonstrate
that secondary Rayleigh-Taylor type instabilities develop in the downstream
region of a reconnecting current sheet. The instability results in the
formation of low-density coherent structures that resemble SADs, and
high-density structures that appear to be spike-like. Comparison between the
simulation results and observations suggests that secondary Rayleigh-Taylor
type instabilities in the exhaust of reconnecting current sheets provide a
plausible mechanism for observed SADs and spikes
The Dynamics of Radiative Shock Waves: Linear and Nonlinear Evolution
The stability properties of one-dimensional radiative shocks with a power-law
cooling function of the form are the main
subject of this work. The linear analysis originally presented by Chevalier &
Imamura, is thoroughfully reviewed for several values of the cooling index
and higher overtone modes. Consistently with previous results, it is
shown that the spectrum of the linear operator consists in a series of modes
with increasing oscillation frequency. For each mode a critical value of the
cooling index, , can be defined so that modes with are unstable, while modes with
are stable. The perturbative analysis is complemented by several numerical
simulations to follow the time-dependent evolution of the system for different
values of . Particular attention is given to the comparison between
numerical and analytical results (during the early phases of the evolution) and
to the role played by different boundary conditions. It is shown that an
appropriate treatment of the lower boundary yields results that closely follow
the predicted linear behavior. During the nonlinear regime, the shock
oscillations saturate at a finite amplitude and tend to a quasi-periodic cycle.
The modes of oscillations during this phase do not necessarily coincide with
those predicted by linear theory, but may be accounted for by mode-mode

Planar Josephson Tunnel Junctions in a Transverse Magnetic Field
Traditionally, since the discovery of the Josephson effect in 1962, the
magnetic diffraction pattern of planar Josephson tunnel junctions has been
recorded with the field applied in the plane of the junction. Here we discuss
the static junction properties in a transverse magnetic field where
demagnetization effects imposed by the junction geometry and configuration of
the electrodes are important. Measurements of the critical current versus
magnetic field in planar Nb-based high-quality junctions with different
geometry, size and critical current density show that it is advantageous to use
a transverse magnetic field rather than an in-plane field to suppress the

Participant recruitment to FiCTION, a primary dental care trial â survey of facilitators and barriers
Objective To identify reasons behind a lower than expected participant recruitment rate within the FiCTION trial, a multi-centre paediatric primary dental care randomised controlled trial (RCT).
Subjects (materials) and methods An online survey, based on a previously published tool, consisting of both quantitative and qualitative responses, completed by staff in dental practices recruiting to FiCTION. Ratings from quantitative responses were aggregated to give overall scores for factors related to participant recruitment. Qualitative responses were independently grouped into themes.
Results Thirty-nine anonymous responses were received. Main facilitators related to the support received from the central research team and importance of the research question. The main barriers related to low child eligibility rates and the integration of trial processes within routine workloads.
Conclusions These findings have directed strategies for enhancing participant recruitment at existing practices and informed recruitment of further practices. The results help provide a profile of the features required of practices to successfully screen and recruit participants. Future trials in this setting should consider the level of interest in the research question within practices, and ensure trial processes are as streamlined as possible. Research teams should actively support practices with participant recruitment and maintain enthusiasm among the entire practice team
Adiabatic Magnetization of Superconductors as a High-Performance Cooling Mechanism
The adiabatic magnetization of a superconductor is a cooling principle
proposed in the 30s, which has never been exploited up to now. Here we present
a detailed dynamic description of the effect, computing the achievable final
temperatures as well as the process timescales for different superconductors in
various regimes. We show that, although in the experimental conditions explored
so far the method is in fact inefficient, a suitable choice of initial
temperatures and metals can lead to unexpectedly large cooling effect, even in
the presence of dissipative phenomena. Our results suggest that this principle
can be re-envisaged today as a performing refrigeration method to access the

Solar sail capture trajectories at Mercury
Mercury is an ideal environment for future planetary exploration by solar sail since it has proved difficult to reach with conventional propulsion and hence remains largely unexplored. In addition, its proximity to the Sun provides a solar sail acceleration of order ten times the sail characteristic acceleration at 1 AU. Conventional capture techniques are shown to be unsuitable for solar sails and a new method is presented. It is shown that capture is bound by upper and lower limits on the orbital elements of the approach orbit and that failure to be within limits results in a catastrophic collision with the planet. These limits are presented for a range of capture inclinations and sail characteristic accelerations. It is found that sail hyperbolic excess velocity is a critical parameter during capture at Mercury, with only a narrow allowed band in order to avoid collision with the planet. "You come because itâs an interesting placeâ : the impact of attending a heritage programme on the well-being of people living with dementia and their care partners
Promoting access to heritage settings has been acknowledged as a way
to promote wellbeing in the UK for people living with dementia and their
care partners. Yet there is a lack of information available internationally
on the contribution of heritage sites to promote wellbeing and social
inclusion for those living with dementia. This paper addresses this gap by
reporting on the impact for 48 people of participating in the âSensory
Palacesâ (SP) programme run by Historic Royal Palaces at Hampton Court
and Kew Palaces in the UK. Two primary data sources were used; postsession interviews involving 30 participants (the person living with
dementia and/or their care partners), and 131 sets of self-complete pre
and post session mood questionnaires administered directly before and
after SP session attendance. Analysis of the data sets is presented under
three themes: Enjoyment and Engagement; Connecting and Learning
and Place, Space and Time. The findings demonstrate participants
highly valued the heritage sessions and reported positively on the impact
this had for their individual wellbeing and their relationships with one
another. This paper highlights the opportunity for heritage sites to
contribute to promoting wellbeing for people living with dementia
