    The central region of the Fornax cluster -- II. Spectroscopy and radial velocities of member and background galaxies

    Radial velocities of 94 galaxies brighter than about V_tot = 20 mag in the direction of the central Fornax cluster have been measured. Except for 8 Fornax members, all galaxies lie in the background. Among the 8 members, there are 5 nucleated dwarf ellipticals that are already listed in the FCC (Ferguson 1989, AJ 98, 367). Two of the 3 ``new'' members are very compact and have surface brightnesses comparable to globular clusters, however their luminosities are in the range of dwarf elliptical nuclei. The measured line indices (especially Mg2, H beta, and iron) of the brighter of the compact objects suggest a solar metallicity, whereas the fainter compact object as well as the dE,Ns have line indices that are similar to those of old metal-poor globular clusters (GCs). However, with these data it is not possible to clearly classify the compact objects either as very bright globular clusters, isolated nuclei of dE,Ns, or even compact ellipticals. A background galaxy cluster at z = 0.11 has been found just behind the center of the Fornax cluster. This explains the excess population of galaxies reported in Paper I. The brightest galaxy of the background cluster lies only 1.1 arcmin south of NGC 1399 and is comparable in absolute luminosity with the central Fornax galaxy itself.Comment: 12 pages, LaTeX2e, uses aa.cls, including 9 PostScript figures; accepted for publication in A&AS, also available at http://www.astro.puc.cl/~mhilker/publication.htm

    The central region of the Fornax cluster -- I. A catalog and photometric properties of galaxies in selected CCD fields

    We present a photometric catalog (based on V and I photometry) of galaxies in the central regions of the Fornax galaxy cluster. Our 11 CCD fields cover 0.17 degrees in total. The limiting surface brightness is around 24 mag arsec^-2, similar to that of Ferguson's (1989, AJ 98, 367) catalog, whereas our limiting total magnitude is around V = 22 mag, about two magnitudes fainter. It is the surface brightness limit, however, that prevents us from detecting the counterparts of the faintest Local Group dwarf spheroidals. The photometric properties of all objects are presented as a catalog. The properties and fit parameters of the surface brightness profiles for a sub-sample are presented as a second catalog (both catalogs are available in electronic form at the CDS). We can only add 4 new dwarf galaxies to Ferguson's catalog. However, we confirm that the dwarf galaxies in Fornax follow a similar surface brightness-magnitude relation as the Local Group dwarfs. They also follow the color (metallicity) - relation seen in other galaxy clusters. A formerly suspected excess of dwarf galaxies surrounding the central cD galaxy NGC 1399 can finally be ruled out. An enhanced density of objects around NGC 1399 can indeed be seen, but it appears displaced with respect to the central galaxy and is identified as a background cluster at z = 0.11 in Paper II of these series, which will discuss spectroscopic results for our sample.Comment: 15 pages, LaTeX2e, uses aa.cls, including 10 PostScript figures, 1 additional gif figure; accepted for publication in A&AS, also available at http://www.astro.puc.cl/~mhilker/publication.htm

    CXCR4 inhibitors: tumor vasculature and therapeutic challenges

    CXCL12, also known as SDF-1, is the single natural ligand for chemokine receptors CXCR4 and CXCR7. CXCL12 has angiogenic properties in normal endothelial tissue and is involved in the outgrowth and metastasis of CXCR4 expressing tumors. Recent investigations have indicated that CXCL12 levels increase after chemo- and anti- VEGF therapy, favouring recurrences. The blockade of CXCL12/CXCR4 axis has emerged as a potential additional or alternative target for neo-adjuvant treatments. We have reviewed recent patent applications between 2008 and 2011 in tumor angiogenesis and the most clinical data supporting the potential use of anti-CXCR4 agents in this field. Among these, AMD3100, also known as Plerixaform (Mozobil® by Genzyme), is approved for stem cell mobilisation in patients with leukaemia, while BKT140 (Emory University), POL6326 (Polyphor Ag) and TG-0054 (ChemoCentryx) are currently in clinical trials in combination with chemotherapy for multiple myeloma and leukaemia. The aptamer Nox-A12 (Noxxon) is in trials for chronic lymphatic leukaemia treatment. MSX-122 (Metastatix) is in Phase I trials for solid tumor treatment, while CXCR7-specific inhibitor CCX2066 (ChemoCentryx) is still in preclinical studies. We have also considered other strategies, such RNA interference and miRNA, which could be tested for solid tumor adjuvant therapy

    Gadofluorine M-enhanced MRI shows involvement of circumventricular organs in neuroinflammation

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Circumventricular organs (CVO) are cerebral areas with incomplete endothelial blood-brain barrier (BBB) and therefore regarded as "gates to the brain". During inflammation, they may exert an active role in determining immune cell recruitment into the brain.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In a longitudinal study we investigated <it>in vivo </it>alterations of CVO during neuroinflammation, applying Gadofluorine M- (Gf) enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, an animal model of multiple sclerosis. SJL/J mice were monitored by Gadopentate dimeglumine- (Gd-DTPA) and Gf-enhanced MRI after adoptive transfer of proteolipid-protein-specific T cells. Mean Gf intensity ratios were calculated individually for different CVO and correlated to the clinical disease course. Subsequently, the tissue distribution of fluorescence-labeled Gf as well as the extent of cellular inflammation was assessed in corresponding histological slices.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We could show that the Gf signal intensity of the choroid plexus, the subfornicular organ and the area postrema increased significantly during experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, correlating with (1) disease severity and (2) the delay of disease onset after immunization. For the choroid plexus, the extent of Gf enhancement served as a diagnostic criterion to distinguish between diseased and healthy control mice with a sensitivity of 89% and a specificity of 80%. Furthermore, Gf improved the detection of lesions, being particularly sensitive to optic neuritis. In correlated histological slices, Gf initially accumulated in the extracellular matrix surrounding inflammatory foci and was subsequently incorporated by macrophages/microglia.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Gf-enhanced MRI provides a novel highly sensitive technique to study cerebral BBB alterations. We demonstrate for the first time <it>in vivo </it>the involvement of CVO during the development of neuroinflammation.</p

    The Very Large Telescope Lyman-Break Galaxy Redshift Survey – IV. Gas and galaxies at z ∼ 3 in observations and simulations

    We use a combination of observations and simulation to study the relationship between star-forming galaxies and the intergalactic medium at z ≈ 3. The observed star-forming galaxy sample is based on spectroscopic redshift data taken from a combination of Very Large Telescope (VLT) Lyman-break galaxy (LBG) Redshift Survey (VLRS) data and Keck Low-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (LRIS) observations in fields centred on bright background quasi-stellar objects (QSOs), whilst the simulation data is taken from the Galaxies–Intergalactic Medium Interaction Calculation (GIMIC). In the simulation, we find that the dominant peculiar velocities are in the form of large-scale coherent motions of gas and galaxies. Gravitational infall of galaxies towards one another is also seen, consistent with expectations from linear theory. At smaller scales, the root-mean-square (RMS) peculiar velocities in the simulation overpredict the difference between the simulated real- and z-space galaxy correlation functions. Peculiar velocity pairs with separations smaller than 1 h−1 Mpc have a smaller dispersion and explain the z-space correlation function better. The Lyα auto- and cross-correlation functions in the GIMIC simulation appear to show infall smaller than implied by the expected βLyα ≈ 1.3 (McDonald et al.). There is a possibility that the reduced infall may be due to the galaxy-wide outflows implemented in the simulation. The main challenge in comparing these simulated results with the observed Keck + VLRS correlation functions comes from the presence of velocity errors for the observed LBGs, which dominate at ≲ 1 h− 1 Mpc scales. When these are taken into account, the observed LBG correlation functions are well matched by the high amplitude of clustering, shown by higher mass (M* > 109 M⊙) galaxies in the simulation. The simulated cross-correlation function shows similar neutral gas densities around galaxies to those seen in the observations. The simulated and observed Lyα z-space autocorrelation functions again agree better with each other than with the βLyα ≈ 1.3 infall model. Our overall conclusion is that, at least in the simulation, gas and galaxy peculiar velocities are generally towards the low end of expectation. Finally, little direct evidence is seen in either simulation or observations for high transmission near galaxies due to feedback, in agreement with previous results
