    Accommodating 'others'?: housing dispersed, forced migrants in the UK

    Utilising insights from a qualitative study in the city of Leeds (UK), this paper considers issues related to the housing of dispersed forced migrants. The term 'dispersed forced migrants' is used here as a general label to include four groups of international migrants (i.e. refugees, asylum seekers, those with humanitarian protection status and failed asylum seekers) who have previously been dispersed, on a no choice basis, to a variety of locations across the UK under the requirements of the Immigration and Asylum Act (1999). The tiering of housing entitlement that exists within the generic population of dispersed forced migrants (a consequence of the particular socio-legal status assigned to individuals), and its role in rendering migrants susceptible to homelessness is outlined. The adequacy/standard of accommodation made available to forced migrants is also discussed. It is concluded that current arrangements fail to meet the basic housing needs of many forced migrants. Any future improvement in this situation will require a significant shift in government policy

    Normalising jurisdictional heterotopias through place branding : the cases of Christiania and Metelkova

    This paper explores the political dimensions of place branding as a path to normalisation for areas where a paradoxical relationship with the law exists, places that we coin “jurisdictional heterotopias” borrowing from Foucauldian literature. We posit that place branding plays a fundamental role in facilitating scale jumping in the otherwise vertically aligned legal space, a hierarchy designed to exclude spatial multiplicity from its premise. By examining the role of place branding in such areas, we endeavour to understand and appreciate the selective application of the law, the perpetuation of unregulated and illegal activity, as well as the place – specificity of legal practice. Ultimately, we argue that strong place branding associations permit the engulfment of this type of heterotopias in the “mainstream” leading to their normalisation; such a normalisation results not only in the acceptance of their uniqueness by the institutional elements, but also in the potential nullification of the liberties their communities advocate

    Endovaginal magnetic resonance imaging of stage 1A/1B cervical cancer with A T2- and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance technique: effect of lesion size and previous cone biopsy on tumor detectability.

    Objective To evaluate the effects of previous cone biopsy and lesion size on detectability of stage 1a/1b cervical cancer using endovaginal T2- and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging.Methods One hundred and thirteen patients with cervical tumor were imaged using an endovaginal coil with T2-weighted (T2-W) and diffusion-weighted single-shot echo-planar sequences; 85 managed surgically (58 with prior cone biopsy/LLETZ) were evaluated. T2-W images and ADC maps viewed simultaneously were scored positive or negative for tumor and compared with histology at surgery. MRI tumor volumes, maximum radiological and histological dimensions were recorded. ROC analysis determined the MRI volume with optimal sensitivity/specificity for identifying tumor in those without and with prior cone biopsy/LLETZ and the maximum histological dimension for correctly identifying tumor with MRI. Mean apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs) from tumor and adjacent normal epithelium were compared.Results Sensitivity and specificity for detecting tumor in those without (100%; 100% respectively) and with (80%; 78.9% respectively) prior cone biopsy/LLETZ were significantly different (p<0.001). Following cone biopsy/LLETZ, MRI tumor volume of 83 mm3 detected tumor with 80% sensitivity, 94.7% specificity; a 5.3mm maximal histological dimension was detected on MRI with 100% sensitivity, 100% specificity. Tumor ADCs were significantly lower (p<0.001) than paired normal epithelial tissue (median, 988×10(-6) mm2/s vs. 1564×10(-6) mm2/s) but neither tumor nor epithelial ADCs differed significantly between patients with or without prior cone biopsy/LLETZ (p=0.48 and 0.15, respectively).Conclusions Endovaginal MRI with T2- and diffusion-weighted sequences has significantly lower sensitivity and specificity for tumor detection following cone biopsy/LLETZ

    The corporate brand and strategic direction: Senior business school managers’ cognitions of corporate brand building and management

    This revelatory study focuses on top Financial Times (FT) ranked British business school managers cognitions of corporate brand building and management. The study insinuates there is a prima facie bilateral link between corporate branding and strategic direction. Among this genus of business school, the data revealed corporate brand building entailed an on-going concern with strategic management, stakeholder management, corporate communications, service focus, leadership, and commitment. These empirical findings, chime with the early conceptual scholarship on corporate brand management dating back to the mid-1990s. These foundational articles stressed the multi-disciplinary and strategic nature of corporate brand management and stressed the significant role of the CEO. As such, this research adds further credence to the above in terms of best-practice vis-à-vis corporate brand management. Curiously, whilst senior managers espouse a corporate brand orientation, corporate brand management is seemingly not accorded a similar status in the curriculum. Drawing on general embedded case study methodological approach, data was collected within eight leading (FT-ranked) business schools in Great Britain at Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, Bradford, Cranfield, Warwick, Lancaster and City (London) Universities. Each of these eight British business schools can be deemed as ‘top’ business schools by virtue of their inclusion in the influential Financial Times (FT) worldwide list of top business schools.     Investigating key antecedents and outcomes of employee-based brand equity

    A wealth of research examines firm- or consumer-based brand equity but largely ignores internal stakeholders’ perceptions of the brand asset. The present study focuses on service employees who affect both internal (i.e. other employees) and external (i.e. customers) stakeholders through their interactions. The study draws on cognitive psychology and social identity theory to develop and empirically test an integrated model of antecedents and consequences of employee-based brand equity (EBBE) that distinguishes between a cognitive and an affective route for its development via brand knowledge and brand identification respectively. The research extends the limited work on EBBE by examining how perceptions of employees about their supervisors’ brand leadership behaviors and their supervisors’ focus on their subordinates significantly drive employees’ responses to the internal brand. The proposed model also highlights the significant role of EBBE vis-à-vis two citizenship behaviors, namely brand value dissemination and customer orientation

    Perfluorinated compounds in the Pearl River and Yangtze River of China

    A total of 14 perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) were quantified in river water samples collected from tributaries of the Pearl River (Guangzhou Province, south China) and the Yangtze River (central China). Among the PFCs analyzed, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) were the two compounds with the highest concentrations. PFOS concentrations ranged from 0.90 to 99 ng/1 and < 0.01-14 ng/1 in samples from the Pearl River and Yangtze River, respectively; whereas those for PFOA ranged from 0.85 to 13 ng/l and 2.0-260 ng/l. Lower concentrations were measured for perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), perfluorooctanesulfoamide (PFOSA), perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA), perfluorononaoic acid (PFNA), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), and perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnDA). Concentrations of several perfluorocarboxylic acids, including perfluorododecanoic acid (PFDoDA), perfluorotetradecanoic acid (PFTeDA), perfluorohexadecanoic acid (PFHxDA) and perfluorooctadecanoic acid (PFOcDA) were lower than the limits of quantification in all the samples analyzed. The highest concentrations of most PFCs were observed in water samples from the Yangtze River near Shanghai, the major industrial and financial centre in China. In addition, sampling locations in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River with a reduced flow rate might serve as a final sink for contaminants from the upstream river runoffs. Generally, PFOS was the dominant PFC found in samples from the Pearl River, while PFOA was the predominant PFC in water from the Yangtze River. Specifically, a considerable amount of PFBS (22.9-26.1% of total PFC analyzed) was measured in water collected near Nanjing, which indicates the presence of potential sources of PFBS in this part of China. Completely different PFC composition profiles were observed for samples from the Pearl River and the Yangtze River. This indicates the presence of dissimilar sources in these two regions.     Comparison of the effects of salmeterol/fluticasone propionate with fluticasone propionate on airway physiology in adults with mild persistent asthma

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This study compared the effect of inhaled fluticasone propionate (FP) with the combination of salmeterol/fluticasone propionate (SFC) on lung function parameters in patients with mild asthma.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Adult patients with mild persistent asthma (≄ 80% predicted FEV<sub>1</sub>) receiving 200–500 ÎŒg of BDP or equivalent were randomised to receive either FP 100 ÎŒg or SFC 50/100 ÎŒg twice daily from a Diskus<sup>Âź </sup>inhaler for four weeks. The primary outcome was the change from baseline in airway resistance (sRaw) at 12 hrs post dose measured by whole body plethysmography. Impulse oscillometry and spirometry were also performed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A comparison of the geometric mean sRaw at 12 hrs post dose in the SFC group to the FP group gave a ratio of 0.76 (0.66 – 0.89, p < 0.001) at week 2 and 0.81 (0.71 – 0.94, p = 0.006) at week 4. Similarly, significant results in favour of SFC for oscillometry measurements of resistance and reactance were observed. FEV<sub>1 </sub>was also significantly superior at week 2 in the SFC group (mean difference 0.16L, 95% CI; 0.03 – 0.28, p = 0.015), but not at week 4 (mean difference 0.17L, 95% CI -0.01 – 0.34, p = 0.060).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>SFC is superior to FP in reducing airway resistance in mild asthmatics with near normal FEV<sub>1 </sub>values. This study provides evidence that changes in pulmonary function in patients with mild asthma are detected more sensitively by plethysmography compared to spirometry</p> <p>Trial registration number</p> <p>NCT00370591.</p

    Co-creating theatre: Authentic engagement or inter-legitimation?

    This article investigates the development, purpose and value of co-creation in theatre. Through a qualitative analysis of a festival of new work at West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds, it explores the levers and barriers to participatory engagement and evaluates the phenomenon of co-creation from the comparative perspective of theatre producers and audiences. The rising trend of co-creation reflects the evolving role of the audience in the creative process. Co-creation is one of the most intensive ways audiences can engage with the arts, and this study questions to what extent it can be regarded as an authentic democratization of the creative process. The study takes a qualitative approach, based on participant observation and 12 in-depth interviews with a sample drawn from theatre-makers, managers, marketers and audiences. Its key findings are that co-creation attracts a highly niche audience of “theatre people” who are active learners and risk takers and that while an all-encompassing definition of co-creation remains elusive, the activity is here to stay. Co-creation is ultimately messy, raw, incomplete, contingent and context-dependent. Successful co-creation involves trust, respect, collaboration, playfulness and exchange; it takes participants on an adventurous journey and deepens their engagement with theatre. The implications of this study are as follows: producers and artists should engage authentically with participants and explore ways to develop their co-creative skills; marketers should utilize experiential marketing techniques to emphasize the different, fun, risky and edgy aspects of co-creation; and policymakers should not rely on co-creation to widen participation and democratize the arts, but accept that it can deepen engagement for a select few
