Aim: Investigation of possible effects of rhubarb extract on adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity in cancerous and non cancerous human gastric and colon tissues to obtain information about possible mechanism of anti cancer action of rhubarb. Materials and methods: Cancerous and non cancerous human gastric and colon tissues removed from patients by surgical operations were used in the studies. The extracts were prepared in distilled water. Before and after treatment with the extracts, ADA activities in the tissue homogenates were measured. Results: ADA activity was found to be higher in gastric tissue compared with colon tissue, but no differences were found between ADA activities of cancerous and non cancerous tissues. It was found that rhubarb extract significantly inhibited ADA activity both in cancerous and non cancerous gastric and colon tissues. Conclusion: Our results suggest that aquoeus extract from rhubarb inhibits ADA activities in both gastric and colon tissues significantly. It is suggested that in addition to other proposed mechanisms, acumulated adenosine due to the inhibition of ADA enzyme might also play part in the anticancer properties of th

The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of ionic highosmolar contrast medium on oxidative metabolism in liver, urinary bladder, and ovary tissues and to obtain information about possible protective effects of vitamin C. Twenty-one female rats, 14 weeks old, were used in this study. They were divided into three groups of seven rats: Sham (group I), contrast (group II), contrast ? vitamin C (group III). Vitamin C was given orally to the animals in group III during the study period. On the fifth day, contrast medium was given via intravenous infusion as a single dose to the animals in groups II and III. On the sixth day of the study, the animals were killed with anesthesia by ketamine hydrochloride. Then, their liver, bladder, and ovary tissues were removed to measure analyses parameters. Our results suggested that contrast medium led to some increases in malondialdehyde levels in the liver, bladder, and ovary tissues and that vitamin C prevented these increases in the tissues. Nitric oxide level also was found to increase in the contrast-treated animals and vitamin C prevented this increase in the liver tissue. Ionic high-osmolar contrast medium leads to weak oxidant stress in rat liver, bladder, and ovary tissues, and vitamin C prevents this oxidant stress

Both alloys have hexagonal structures at room temperature and show first order phase transition below room temperature. the entropy change-Delta S of these alloys are calculated as -22.1 J kg(-1) K-1 (for Alloy-1 alloy) and -27.1 J kg(-1) K-1 (for Alloy-2 alloy) under Delta H = 7 T. Magnetic hysteresis losses of these alloys are very small when compared with the undoped alloy. Considering the high magnetocaloric effect and low magnetic hysteresis features, boron doping on CoMnGe family alloys provides an alternative method to tailor magnetic and magnetocaloric properties. 97-101Possible effects of aqueous garlic (Allium sativum Linn.) and red clover (Trifolium pratense Linn.) extracts on adenosine deaminase (ADA) activities were investigated in cancerous and non-cancerous human liver tissues and results were compared with those of Fludarabine, a known ADA inhibitor. Ten cancerous and 10 non-cancerous adjacent liver tissues were obtained from patients with metastatic type liver cancer by surgical operations. Kinetic analyses were carried out to establish Vmax and Km values of the reaction catalyzed by ADA in the presence or absence of inhibitor. ADA activity was found to be lower in the cancerous tissues compared with non-cancerous tissues. Aqueous garlic and red clover extracts induced significant inhibition ADA activity in both the tissues. Inhibition percentage was relatively higher in the cancerous tissues as compared with non-cancerous tissues. Furthermore, we observed that inhibition percentage induced by garlic and red clover extracts were higher than those of Fludarabine at the concentrations studied

Our results show that the structural and magnetic phase transitions in CoMnGe1 Ga-x(x) alloys are tailored by the substitution of Ga for Ge. the CoMnGe1 Ga-x(x) (x = 0.05, 0.055 and 0.06) alloys exhibit a giant magnetocaloric effect due to coexistence of magnetic and Martensitic phase transitions at the same temperatures. the entropy change values range from -3.2 to -38.4 J kg (1) K (1) for Delta H = 7 T and are proportional to the volume differences of the phases involved in the transition. the adiabatic temperature change value of CoMnGe0.945Ga0.055 is calculated as 6.5 K for the magnetic field change of 2 T from magnetic and heat capacity measurements. the density of states of electrons at Fermi level and the Debye temperature values of this alloy are found 1.37 states eV (1) atom (1) and 337 K from low temperature heat capacity measurements. Purpose: Studies with garlic have shown the medicinal value of the plant by its antioxidant potential which is exerted by its organosulfur rich content. In this study, the aim is to determine any potential antioxidant efficacy of the less toxic water soluble extract of a widely cultivated garlic form in Turkey, in terms of alterations on the oxidant/antioxidant status of HL60 promyelocytic leukemia cell line
