Técnica, posthumanismo, experiencia

El presente trabajo propone una reflexión sobre la técnica y sobre las condiciones de una crítica de la técnica en el horizonte contemporáneo del agotamiento de los paradigmas humanistas desde los que tradicionalmente se pensó esa crítica. Se plantea que la pregunta por la técnica ha de diferenciarse de la pregunta (instrumental) por los dispositivos técnicos, es decir, ha de partir de la ruptura con el supuesto humanista de la exterioridad entre técnica y humanidad. Una vez planteada esta escena posthumanista se proponen distintas alternativas posibles en ese horizonte, que oscilan entre el cinismo antropotécnico y el experimentalismo radical postidentitario. Finalmente, el trabajo postula que la puesta en disposición del lenguaje (en tanto transparencia) y de la temporalidad (en cuanto velocidad) son los parámetros clave del contemporáneo capitalismo de la información. Ante ello, se propone que el desafío fundamental de un posthumanismo radical es abrir una experiencia del lenguaje y del tiempo más allá de toda forma de disponibilidad.Fil: Garcia Garcia, Luis Ignacio. Critical Theory and Intellectual History in José Sazbón

La intervención teórico-política de José Sazbón (1937-2008) puede ser entendida como un esfuerzo por articular historia intelectual y teoría crítica. Por un lado, nos ofrece una historia intelectual de la teoría crítica que busca hacer patente para la propia teoría crítica las condiciones históricas de sus posibilidades y dificultades. Por otro lado, plantea una teoría crítica de la historiografía que exige a esta última una orientación política normativa en la que anclar el sentido a su labor. En su sistemática articulación, ambas orientaciones confluyen en la formulación de un amplio programa, aún vigente, de historia crítica del marxismo occidental.The theoretical-political intervention of José Sazbón (1937-2008) can be understood as an effort to connect intellectual history and critical theory. On one hand, it offers an intellectual history of critical theory that seeks to make obvious the historical conditions of its possibilities and difficulties. On the other hand, it proposes a critical theory of historiography that demands from the latter a normative political orientation in which the meaning of its labor is anchored. The proper place of professionals (and non-professionals and machines) in web translation

La quantitat de treball disponible per al traductor professional a la web sembla que va disminuint, a causa del efecte de pinça que duen a terme la traducció automàtica i la traducció col·laborativa (crowdsourcing). Per mantenir l'estatus professional, el traductor ha de triar entre especialitzar-se en una àrea altament regulada o bé convertir-se en un expert en control de la qualitat del llenguatge.La cantidad de trabajo disponible para el traductor profesional en la web parece estar disminuyendo, debido al efecto de pinza entre la traducción automática y la traducción de colaboración (crowdsourcing). Para mantener su estatus profesional, el traductor debe elegir entre especializarse en áreas altamente reguladas o convertirse en un experto en el control de la calidad lingüística.The amount of work available to the professional translator on the web appears to be shrinking, due to the pincer effect of both machine translation and "crowdsourcing". Australian translators: missing in action? CAT and TM awareness over two years of the AUSIT-eBulletin

How relevant is Translation Memory software for translators in Australia? This paper responds by examining the rich yet under-utilised source of email discussion lists. Following content analysis methodology, data from the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators Inc. (AUSIT) eBulletin archive was keyword searched and subjected to computer-aided qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS). The results indicate Australian translators’ awareness of TM and other computer-aided translation (CAT) tools seems limited with respect to that of their northern hemisphere counterparts. The study argues that with near instantaneous communication redefining market boundaries, a failure to engage with what may be termed the new translation paradigm could cost the profession dearly

Translating in the Cloud Age: Online Marketplaces

This article explores the influence of cloud computing on translation, including professional translation. Cloud computing reshapes the management of labour in ways that unsettle the traditional relations between managers and workers. It gives managers live control over how a project progresses, and a minute description of how each worker performs. These real-time metrics in turn facilitate rapid, semi-automated performance assessment that focuses on the desired parameters and saves sifting through résumés. Now, even larger translation projects conducted under more conventional project management protocols are being pushed to online marketplaces in the cloud and one of the reasons behind the decision may be so that the generated metadata can be analysed to profile the most efficient procedures and identify the best performing translators.While the advantages of those online marketplaces to vendors and their clients are apparent, the model’s success requires cloud entrepreneurs to sell it to potential workers as well. The marketing therefore emphasises democratised opportunity, whereby the suitably skilled (amateur or professional) can exploit their linguistic and topic knowledge by working where and when they wish, on more (and more varied) projects. Personal profiling is promoted as an added benefit that helps ensure each individual gets the most suitable offers. From a labour studies perspective however, this paper argues the cloud environment may reduce translators’ bargaining power
