Kulkul in Global Era of Communication Advancement

Communication is a form of interaction between the communicator and the communicant, requiring certain media in order for the message to be conveyed well. Kulkul as a communication medium has a significant role and several functions as a means to unite the community. For the people of Bali, kulkul has a high spirit of togetherness. Every time the sound of kulkul is heard, the residents will be present at the place previously agreed upon. With the power of its sound, kulkul is able to create unwritten rules. It is obeyed by all members of the community. It does not matter whether they are officials, farmers, caste people or ordinary people, all of them have to gather when they hear kulkul. This is because the sound of kulkul is a significant order that must be obeyed by the members of the community. The development and advancement of information and communication technologies in various forms of digital media, which make all activities more effective and efficient cause kulkul function as a traditional communication medium in an intense pressure from electronic media. AN ANALYSIS OF FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE LACK OF SPEAKING SKILL IN MANAGEMENT STUDENTS AT HINDU INDONESIA UNIVERSITY IN THE SECOND SEMESTER OF 2019

This study was aimed to find out the factors that influence the lack of speaking skill in management students at Hindu Indonesia University in the second semester of 2019. The subject of this study consists of 100 students. This study is descriptive qualitative in the form of a case study. The data were collected through questionnaires and students' interviews. The result showed some factors influence the lack of speaking skill such as the students to feel more enthusiasm when they do the active activity like playing games, explaining something or telling a story; the use of Indonesian or Balinese language during English class could hold up the process of speaking; the limitation in students to speak English because of the lack of vocabulary. Integrating collaborative learning in cyclic learning sessions to promote students’ reading comprehension and critical thinking

The advancement of technology requires higher skill in obtaining information due to the rapid flows of information in this recent globalization era. Consequently,  reading comprehension becomes an important language skill for students to nurture. In classroom practices, Indonesian students still encounter problems in English reading comprehension. The present classroom action study dealt with improving reading comprehension through collaborative learning. This is due to some studies revealed that collaborative learning is an effective learning strategy to improve students' learning achievement. The data were collected by administering a pre-test in reading comprehension prior to the teaching cycle and two post-tests at the end of every teaching cycle. The results showed that collaborative learning is significantly effective to improve students' reading comprehension and critical thinking. This study implies that teachers should consider the integration of collaborative learning in teaching reading comprehension

A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY ON STUDENTS' ESSAY WRITING SKILLS

The objective of this study was to investigate the essay-writing skills of students in Indonesian education institutions. A descriptive study approach was used to collect data from a group of students. Students were given three topics to choose from and were instructed to write academic essays within a certain time range. The student writings were gathered and scored using a scoring rubric that assessed several components of the essays. The data obtained were statistically analysed using descriptive analysis to describe the students’ essay writing skills. According to the findings of this study, the majority of students performed modestly on the writing test, with some performing better than others. The research found that the students struggled with organization and consistency, while their grammar and word usage still required to be improved. Teacher competence and teacher welfare are essential aspects to successfully improve education quality. Assessment instrument models for teacher competence and teacher welfare therefore important to be developed to meet the required standards. This study aims at developing a set of assessment instrument models for teacher competence, teacher welfare, and educational quality improvement. The study was designed for two years adopting the Research and Development method employing 4D models consisting of Define, Design, Develop and Disseminate. The result of this study is in the form of assessment models for teacher competence, teacher welfare, and quality of education which have been validated by selected teachers, principals, and school supervisors. CYCLIC LEARNING SESSION OF INDONESIAN FOLKTALES UTILIZATION TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION

Folktales are the most valuable learning resources and embodied linguistic and cultural usefulness. Through the integration of folktales in reading classes enables students develop their readings skill and enrich their linguistic capabilities, in the same their cultural horizons developed accordingly. The present studies aimed at improving English learners’ reading comprehension through the integration of Indonesian folktales in reading classes. A classroom action research was conducted in two consecutive cyclic learning consisted of four thematic learning sessions. Data required for this study were collected by administering pre test to figure out the initial reflection of the students’ reading comprehension, and a post-test was conducted by the end of each cycle to reveal the improvement of the students’ reading comprehension after the implementation of Indonesian folktales.  A set of questionnaire was also administered to reveal the changing behavior of the English learners after learning reading comprehension through Indonesian folktales. The result of this study revealed that there were significant improvement on the students’ reading comprehension from first learning cycle and second learning cycle. LANGUAGE POLITENESS STRATEGIES EMPLOYED BY LECTURERS AND STUDENTS IN ONLINE LEARNING

ABSTRACTPoliteness is a way to communicate so that speakers do not feel pressured, cornered, and offended. Using polite language makes the speech partners and interlocutors feel respected and comfortable and do not cause misunderstanding. In classroom communication, language politeness is vital to maintain harmonious interactions between students and lecturers. It is not merely needed during face-to-face learning, but it is also required during online learning. This study investigates the language politeness strategies students and university lecturers employ during the online learning processes. The researchers in this study used a qualitative approach. The data were collected through conducting observation, recording, and field notes. This study found that several language politeness strategies were employed by the students and the lecturer, namely: the maxim of tact, the maxim of generosity, the maxim of appreciation, the maxim of humility, the maxim of agreement, and the maxim of sympathy. The findings of this study provide implications to enrich the knowledge relevant to the theories and principles concerning effective language politeness strategies used during the learning process.ABSTRAKKesantunan adalah cara berkomunikasi agar penutur tidak merasa tertekan, terpojok, dan tersinggung. Penelitian ini mengkaji strategi kesantunan berbahasa yang digunakan mahasiswa dan dosen selama proses pembelajaran daring. Peneliti dalam penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi, pencatatan, dan catatan lapangan. Penelitian ini menemukan beberapa strategi kesantunan berbahasa yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa dan dosen, yaitu: maksim kebijaksanaan, maksim kedermawanan, maksim penghargaan, maksim kerendahan hati, maksim kesetujuan, dan maksim simpati. Alternative Learning Methods Employed by Language Teachers in the New Normal of COVID-19

ABSTRACTLearning activities should be conducted effectively to create conducive learning conditions to develop students’ creativity and their higher learning competence. Through conducting appropriate and effective learning activities, the learning objectives and learning competencies are easier to achieve. To create effective learning activities, teachers are required to have adequate understanding and competence in employing learning methods. This study aims to explore effective learning methods to create more creative learning activities for the students. This study found several alternative learning methods that can be utilized in the time of the new normal of covid-19 to continually improve the students’ competence. This study implies that teachers should continually expose themselves to various learning methods to establish conducive learning conditions in the classroom. ABSTRAKKegiatan pembelajaran harus dilakukan secara efektif untuk menciptakan kondisi pembelajaran yang kondusif untuk mengembangkan kreativitas dan kompetensi belajar siswa yang lebih tinggi. Melalui pelaksanaan kegiatan pembelajaran yang tepat dan efektif, tujuan pembelajaran dan kompetensi pembelajaran lebih mudah dicapai. Untuk menciptakan kegiatan pembelajaran yang efektif, guru dituntut memiliki pemahaman dan kompetensi yang memadai dalam menggunakan metode pembelajaran.
