    LAS TORTUGAS NEOTROPICALES Y SUS ÁREAS DE ENDEMISMO

    The existence of endemic species allows to delimit areas of endemisms in order to characterize biogeographic regions over the world; the latter are useful to recognize historical processes that could affect the biota. The objective of this work is to determine the areas of endemism of continental, terrestrial and freshwater turtles in the Neotropical region (N = 64 species). A Parsimony Analysis of Endemicity (PAE) was carried out, which allowed to recognize 5 areas, two located in Mexico and three in South America. Three secondary areas were also identified in México and one in the north of South America. Secondary areas are definied by the presence of one endemic species with restricted geographic distribution. While comparing the pattern of areas of endemism obtained for turtles, to those definied using different methods, for other unrelated taxa. We observed that the pattern is not random. The common pattern could have originated due to the effect of congruent historical and ecological processes that affected the Neotropical region as a whole.La existencia de especies endémicas permite establecer áreas de endemismo para caracterizar regiones biogeográficas en el mundo; éstas son útiles para reconocer procesos biogeográficos históricos y definir áreas prioritarias de conservación. El objetivo de este trabajo es determinar las áreas de endemismo de las tortugas continentales, terrestres y de agua dulce, de la región Neotropical (N = 64 especies). Se realizó un análisis de simplicidad de endemismos (PAE), que permitió reconocer cinco áreas de endemismo, ubicadas en México (2 áreas) y en América del Sur (3 áreas). También se delimitaron cuatro áreas secundarias tres en México y una en el norte de América del Sur. Éstas últimas están definidas por la presencia de una especie endémica con distribución geográfica restringida. Al comparar el patrón de áreas de endemismo obtenido para tortugas con los determinados, por distintos métodos, para otros taxones no relacionados, observamos una alta coincidencia que sugiere que el patrón no es aleatorio. El patrón común pudo originarse a través de procesos históricos y ecológicos congruentes que afectaron a la región Neotropical en su totalidad

    ARTHROPODS IN THE DIET OF THE BIRD ASSEMBLAGE FROM A FORESTED RURAL LANDSCAPE IN NORTHERN CHILOÉ ISLAND, CHILE: A QUANTITATIVE STUDY

    Abstract ∙ Knowledge of bird diets is important to understand population fluctuations and the persistence of bird com‐ munities in changing landscapes. However, there is a general lack of quantitative information about the composition of bird diets at the community level in the Neotropics. Although consumption of fruits and seeds by birds has been well documented for forest ecosystems in southern South America, consumption of arthropods has received less attention, despite their relevance in bird diets. Here we describe and evaluate the presence and diversity of arthropods consumed by members of different dietary guilds of the avian community from temperate forests and rural land‐ scapes in northern Chiloé Island, Chile (42°S). We estimated the proportion of arthropods consumed by all bird species captured using mist nests in a mixed rural landscape, and identified arthropods at the order level, based on remains contained in bird droppings. In addition, we estimated trophic diversity for those bird species with the highest number of samples. Arthropod remains were prevalent in dropping contents for nearly all sampled species (17 out of 18 captured species), indicating that arthropod consumption is broadly distributed in the avian assemblage. The insectivorous Chilean swallow (Tachycineta leucopyga) had the highest average number of arthropods per sample but the lowest arthropod diversity. On the contrary, the highest arthropod diversity in droppings corresponded to the insectivorous House Wren (Troglodytes aedon). The omnivorous species, Austral Blackbird (Curaeus curaeus) and White‐ crested Elaenia (Elaenia albiceps) consumed mainly Coleoptera. Finally, arthropod orders found in droppings varied among bird species from the same and between dietary guilds. Resumen ∙ Artrópodos en la dieta del ensamble de aves que habitan el paisaje rural del norte de la Isla de Chiloé, Chile La información sobre los distintos componentes de la dieta de aves resulta relevante para entender las variaciones poblacionales y la subsistencia de comunidades ante la modificación del paisaje. Sin embargo, a la fecha, falta información cuantitativa sobre la composición de la dieta a nivel comunitario en el Neotrópico. A pesar de que el consumo de frutas y semillas por aves ha sido bien documentado para los ecosistemas templados del sur, el consumo de artrópodos ha recibido menos atención a pesar de su relevancia en la dieta de las aves. En este trabajo describimos y evaluamos la diversidad de artrópodos en la dieta de miembros de distintos gremios tróficos de la comunidad de aves de los bosques templados del sur de Sudamérica en el norte de la Isla de Chiloé, Chile (42°S). Para cada especie de ave capturada, estimamos la composición y la diversidad trófica de artrópodos en la dieta en base al análisis de heces. Registramos el consumo de artrópodos en 17 de las 18 especies capturadas, sugiriendo que el consumo de artrópodos está ampliamente distribuido en la comunidad de aves analizada. La Golondrina chilena (Tachycineta leucopyga), especie insectívora, tuvo el mayor número de artrópodos promedio por muestra y, a la vez, la menor diversidad de órdenes de artrópodos en su dieta. Por el contrario, el Chercán (Troglodytes aedon), especie insectívora, registró la mayor diversidad de artrópodos consumidos. Entre las especies omnívoras, tanto el Tordo (Curaeus curaeus) como el Fio‐fio (Elaenia albiceps), consumieron principalmente coleópteros. Finalmente, los órdenes de artrópodos registrados variaron entre aves pertenecientes al mismo gremio así como también entre distintos gremios tróficos.

    Female-female competition is influenced by forehead patch expression in pied flycatcher females

    There is increasing evidence that sexual selection operates in females and not only in males. However, the function of female signals in intrasexual competition has been little studied in species with conventional sex roles. In the Iberian populations of the pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca), some females express a white forehead patch, a trait that in other European populations, only males exhibit and has become a classical example in studies of sexual selection. Here, we investigated whether the expression of this trait plays a role in female-female competition during early breeding stages. To test this hypothesis, we simulated territorial intrusions by challenging resident females with stuffed female decoys expressing or not a forehead patch. We found that resident females directed more attacks per trial and maintained closer distances to non-patched decoys than to patched ones. Also, patched females were more likely to attack the decoy than non-patched females. Interestingly, females were more aggressive against the decoys when their mate was absent. This may indicate that females relax territory vigilance in the presence of their mate or that males interfere in the interaction between competing females. The behavior of resident males was also observed, although it was not affected by decoy's patch expression. Our findings suggest that the forehead patch plays a role in female intrasexual competition. If the forehead patch signals fighting ability, as it does in males, we may interpret that non-patched females probably avoided repeating costly agonistic encounters with the most dominant rivals.Fil: Morales, J..     The Microbiotheriid Dromiciops gliroides, also known as 'Monito del Monte', is considered to be a threatened species and the only living representative of this group of South American marsupials. During the last few years, several blood samples from specimens of 'Monito del Monte' captured at Chiloé island in Chile have been investigated for blood parasites. Inspection of blood smears detected a Hepatozoon species infecting red blood cells. The sequences of DNA fragments corresponding to small subunit ribosomal RNA gene revealed two parasitic lineages belonging to Hepatozoon genus. These parasite lineages showed a basal position with respect to Hepatozoon species infecting rodents, reptiles, and amphibians but are phylogenetically distinct from Hepatozoon species infecting the order Carnivora.     The Subantarctic Rayadito (Aphrastura subantarctica), a new bird species on the southernmost islands of the Americas

    We describe a new taxon of terrestrial bird of the genus Aphrastura (rayaditos) inhabiting the Diego Ramírez Archipelago, the southernmost point of the American continent. This archipelago is geographically isolated and lacks terrestrial mammalian predators as well as woody plants, providing a contrasted habitat to the forests inhabited by the other two Aphrastura spp. Individuals of Diego Ramírez differ morphologically from Aphrastura spinicauda, the taxonomic group they were originally attributed to, by their larger beaks, longer tarsi, shorter tails, and larger body mass. These birds move at shorter distances from ground level, and instead of nesting in cavities in trees, they breed in cavities in the ground, reflecting different life-histories. Both taxa are genetically differentiated based on mitochondrial and autosomal markers, with no evidence of current gene flow. Although further research is required to define how far divergence has proceeded along the speciation continuum, we propose A. subantarctica as a new taxonomic unit, given its unique morphological, genetic, and behavioral attributes in a non-forested habitat. The discovery of this endemic passerine highlights the need to monitor and conserve this still-pristine archipelago devoid of exotic species, which is now protected by the recently created Diego Ramírez Islands-Drake Passage Marine Park.Fil: Rozzi, Ricardo.     Network structure of avian mixed-species flocks decays with elevation and latitude across the Andes.

    Birds in mixed-species flocks benefit from greater foraging efficiency and reduced predation, but also face costs related to competition and activity matching. Because this cost-benefit trade-off is context-dependent (e.g. abiotic conditions and habitat quality), the structure of flocks is expected to vary along elevational, latitudinal and disturbance gradients. Specifically, we predicted that the connectivity and cohesion of flocking networks would (i) decline towards tropical latitudes and lower elevations, where competition and activity matching costs are higher, and (ii) increase with lower forest cover and greater human disturbance. We analysed the structure of 84 flock networks across the Andes and assessed the effect of elevation, latitude, forest cover and human disturbance on network characteristics. We found that Andean flocks are overall open-membership systems (unstructured), though the extent of network structure varied across gradients. Elevation was the main predictor of structure, with more connected and less modular flocks upslope. As expected, flocks in areas with higher forest cover were less cohesive, with better defined flock subtypes. Flocks also varied across latitude and disturbance gradients as predicted, but effect sizes were small. Our findings indicate that the unstructured nature of Andean flocks might arise as a strategy to cope with harsh environmental conditions.     Latitude does not influence cavity entrance orientation of South American avian excavators

    In the Northern Hemisphere, several avian cavity excavators (e.g., woodpeckers) orient their cavities increasingly toward the equator as latitude increases (i.e., farther north), and it is proposed that they do so to take advantage of incident solar radiation at their nests. If latitude is a key driver of cavity orientations globally, this pattern should extend to the Southern Hemisphere. Here, we test the prediction that cavities are oriented increasingly northward at higher (i.e., colder) latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere and describe the preferred entrance direction(s) of 1501 cavities excavated by 25 avian species (n = 22 Picidae, 2 Trogonidae, 1 Furnariidae) across 12 terrestrial ecoregions (15°S ? 55°S) in South America. We used Bayesian projected normal mixed-effects models for circular data to examine the influence of latitude, and potential confounding factors, on cavity orientation. Also, a probability model selection procedure was used to simultaneously examine multiple orientation hypotheses in each ecoregion, to explore underlying cavity-orientation patterns. Contrary to predictions, and patterns from the Northern Hemisphere, birds did not orient their cavities more toward the equator with increasing latitude, suggesting that latitude may not be an important underlying selective force shaping excavation behavior in South America. Moreover, unimodal cavity-entrance orientations were not frequent among the ecoregions analyzed (infour ecoregions), whereas bimodal (in five ecoregions) or uniform (in three ecoregions) werealso common, although many of these patterns were not very sharp. Our results highlight the need to include data from under-studied biotas and regions to improve inferences at macroecology scales. Furthermore, we suggest a re-analysis of Northern Hemisphere cavity orientation patterns using a multimodel approach, and a more comprehensive assessment of the role of environmental factors as drivers of cavity orientation at different spatial scales in both hemispheres.Fil: Ojeda, Valeria Susana.     Senda Darwin Biological Station: Long-term ecological research at the interface between science and society

    Indexación: Web of Science; Scielo.La Estación Biológica Senda Darwin (EBSD) constituye un centro de investigación inmerso en el paisaje rural del norte de la Isla de Chiloé (42º S), donde fragmentos del bosque siempreverde original coexisten con praderas de uso ganadero, turberas de Sphagnum, matorrales sucesionales, plantaciones de Eucalyptus y otras formaciones de origen antropogénico. Desde 1994 hemos realizado estudios de largo plazo centrados en algunas especies de plantas (e.g., Pilgerodendron uviferum D. Don) y animales (e.g., Aphrastura spinicauda Gmelin, Dromiciops gliroides [Thomas]) catalogados como amenazados o escasamente conocidos y en ecosistemas nativos de importancia regional y global (e.g., turberas de Sphagnum, bosque Valdiviano y Nordpatagónico). Las investigaciones han considerado las respuestas de las especies y de los ecosistemas frente al cambio antropogénico del paisaje y cambio climático, así como los efectos de diferentes formas de manejo. Este escenario es semejante al de otras regiones de Chile y Latinoamérica lo que da generalidad a nuestros resultados y modelos. En este período, investigadores asociados a la EBSD han producido más de un centenar de publicaciones en revistas nacionales e internacionales y 30 tesis de pre y postgrado. Entendiendo el papel clave de los seres humanos en los procesos ecológicos de la zona rural, la EBSD ha desarrollado un programa de educación ecológica y vinculación del avance científico con la sociedad local y nacional. La integración de la EBSD a la naciente red de Sitios de Estudios Socio-Ecológicos de Largo Plazo en Chile consolidará y fortalecerá la investigación básica y aplicada que realizamos para proyectarla hacia la siguiente década.Senda Darwin Biological Station (SDBS) is a field research center immersed in the rural landscape of northern Chiloé island (42º S), where remnant patches of the original evergreen forests coexist with open pastures, secondary successional shrublands, Sphagnum bogs, Eucalyptus plantations and other anthropogenic cover types, constituting an agricultural frontier similar to other regions in Chile and Latin America. Since 1994, we have conducted long-term research on selected species of plants (e.g., Pilgerodendron uviferum) and animals (e.g., Aphrastura spinicauda, Dromiciops glirioides) that are considered threatened, poorly known or important for their ecological functions in local ecosystems, and on ecosystems of regional and global relevance (e.g., Sphagnum bogs, North Patagonian and Valdivian rain forests). Research has assessed the responses of species and ecosystems to anthropogenic land-use change, climate change, and the impact of management. During this period, more than 100 scientific publications in national and international journals, and 30 theses (graduate and undergraduate) have been produced by scientists and students associated with SDBS. Because of our understanding of the key role that humans play in ecological processes at this agricultural frontier, since the establishment of SDBS we have been committed to creative research on the communication of science to society and ecological education. The integration of SDBS to the nascent Chilean network of long-term socio-ecological research will consolidate and strengthen basic and applied research to project our work into the next decade.http://ref.scielo.org/vbm4r
