Comparative Study of Asymmetry Origin of Galaxies in Different Environments. II. Near-Infrared observations
In this second paper of two analyses, we present near-infrared (NIR)
morphological and asymmetry studies performed in sample of 92 galaxies found in
different density environments: galaxies in Compact Groups (HCGs), Isolated
Pairs of Galaxies (KPGs), and Isolated Galaxies (KIGs). Both studies have
proved useful for identifying the effect of interactions on galaxies. In the
NIR, the properties of the galaxies in HCGs, KPGs, and KIGs are more similar
than they are in the optical. This is because the NIR band traces the older
stellar populations, which formed earlier and are more relaxed than the younger
populations. However, we found asymmetries related to interactions in both KPG
and HCG samples. In HCGs, the fraction of asymmetric galaxies is even higher
than what we found in the optical. In the KPGs the interactions look like very
recent events, while in the HCGs galaxies are more morphologically evolved and
show properties suggesting they suffered more frequent interactions. The key
difference seems to be the absence of star formation in the HCGs; while
interactions produce intense star formation in the KPGs, we do not see this
effect in the HCGs. This is consistent with the dry merger hypothesis (Coziol &
Plauchu-Frayn 2007); the interaction between galaxies in compact groups, (CGs),
is happening without the presence of gas. If the gas was spent in stellar
formation (to build the bulge of the numerous early-type galaxies), then the
HCGs possibly started interacting sometime before the KPGs. On the other hand,
the dry interaction condition in CGs suggests that the galaxies are on merging
orbits, and consequently such system cannot be that much older either.

LEDA 074886: A remarkable rectangular-looking galaxy
We report the discovery of an interesting and rare, rectangular-shaped
galaxy. At a distance of 21 Mpc, the dwarf galaxy LEDA 074886 has an absolute
R-band magnitude of -17.3 mag. Adding to this galaxy's intrigue is the presence
of an embedded, edge-on stellar disk (of extent 2R_{e,disk} = 12 arcsec = 1.2
kpc) for which Forbes et al. reported V_rot/sigma ~ 1.4. We speculate that this
galaxy may be the remnant of two (nearly edge-one) merged disk galaxies in
which the initial gas was driven inward and subsequently formed the inner disk,
while the stars at larger radii effectively experienced a dissipationless
merger event resulting in this `emerald cut galaxy' having very boxy isophotes
with a_4/a = -0.05 to -0.08 from 3 to 5 kpc. This galaxy suggests that
knowledge from simulations of both `wet' and `dry' galaxy mergers may need to
be combined to properly understand the various paths that galaxy evolution can

The magnitude of black/hispanic disparity in COVID-19 mortality across United States Counties during the first waves of the COVID-19 Pandemic
Objectives: To quantify the Black/Hispanic disparity in COVID-19 mortality in the United States (US). Methods: COVID-19 deaths in all US counties nationwide were analyzed to estimate COVID-19 mortality rate ratios by county-level proportions of Black/Hispanic residents, using mixed-effects Poisson regression. Excess COVID-19 mortality counts, relative to predicted under a counterfactual scenario of no racial/ethnic disparity gradient, were estimated. Results: County-level COVID-19 mortality rates increased monotonically with county-level proportions of Black and Hispanic residents, up to 5.4-fold (=43% Black) and 11.6-fold (=55% Hispanic) higher compared to counties with <5% Black and <15% Hispanic residents, respectively, controlling for county-level poverty, age, and urbanization level. Had this disparity gradient not existed, the US COVID-19 death count would have been 92.1% lower (177,672 fewer deaths), making the rate comparable to other high-income countries with substantially lower COVID-19 death counts. Conclusion: During the first 8 months of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the US experienced the highest number of COVID-19 deaths. This COVID-19 mortality burden is strongly associated with county-level racial/ethnic diversity, explaining most US COVID-19 deaths.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Abstract
Background: Several studies have demonstrated a link between cardiovascular disease (CVD) susceptibility
and the genetic background of populations.
Endothelial activation and dysfunction induced by oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) is one of
the key steps in the initiation of atherosclerosis. The oxidized low density lipoprotein (lectin-like)
receptor 1 (OLR1) gene is the main receptor of ox-LDL. We have previously characterized two
polymorphisms (rs3736235 and rs11053646) associated with the risk for coronary artery disease
(CAD) and acute myocardial infarction (AMI).
Aim: Given their clinical significance, it is of interest to know the distribution of these variants in
populations from different continents.
Subjects and methods: A total of 1229 individuals from 17 different African, Asian and European
populations was genotyped for the two considered markers.
Results: The high frequencies of ancestral alleles in South-Saharan populations is concordant with the
African origin of our species. The results highlight that African populations are closer to Asians, and
clearly separated from the Europeans.
Conclusion: The results confirm significant genetic structuring among populations and suggest a
possible basis for varying susceptibility to CVD among groups correlated with the geographical
location of populations linked with the migrations out of Africa, or with different lifestyle
Case-Crossover Analysis of Air Pollution Health Effects: A Systematic Review of Methodology and Application

Nevertheless, no one has reviewed its application and methodology in this context.OBJECTIVE: We conducted a systematic review of case-crossover (CCO) designs used to study the relationship between air pollution and morbidity and mortality, from the standpoint of methodology and application.DATA SOURCES AND EXTRACTION: A search was made of the MEDLINE and EMBASE databases.Reports were classified as methodologic or applied. From the latter, the following information was extracted: author, study location, year, type of population (general or patients), dependent variable(s), independent variable(s), type of CCO design, and whether effect modification was analyzed for variables at the individual level.DATA SYNTHESIS: The review covered 105 reports that fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Of these, 24 addressed methodological aspects, and the remainder involved the design's application. In the methodological reports, the designs that yielded the best results in simulation were symmetric bidirectional CCO and time-stratified CCO. Furthermore, we observed an increase across time in the use of certain CCO designs, mainly symmetric bidirectional and time-stratified CCO. The dependent variables most frequently analyzed were those relating to hospital morbidity; the pollutants most often studied were those linked to particulate matter. Among the CCO-application reports, 13.6% studied effect modification for variables at the individual level.CONCLUSIONS: The use of CCO designs has undergone considerable growth; the most widely used designs were those that yielded better results in simulation studies: symmetric bidirectional and time-stratified CCO. Automated Morphological Classification of SDSS Red Sequence Galaxies
(abridged) In the last decade, the advent of enormous galaxy surveys has
motivated the development of automated morphological classification schemes to
deal with large data volumes. Existing automated schemes can successfully
distinguish between early and late type galaxies and identify merger
candidates, but are inadequate for studying detailed morphologies of red
sequence galaxies. To fill this need, we present a new automated classification
scheme that focuses on making finer distinctions between early types roughly
corresponding to Hubble types E, S0, and Sa. We visually classify a sample of
984 non-starforming SDSS galaxies with apparent sizes >14". We then develop an
automated method to closely reproduce the visual classifications, which both
provides a check on the visual results and makes it possible to extend
morphological analysis to much larger samples. We visually classify the
galaxies into three bulge classes (BC) by the shape of the light profile in the
outer regions: discs have sharp edges and bulges do not, while some galaxies
are intermediate. We separately identify galaxies with features: spiral arms,
bars, clumps, rings, and dust. We find general agreement between BC and the
bulge fraction B/T measured by the galaxy modeling package GIM2D, but many
visual discs have B/T>0.5. Three additional automated parameters -- smoothness,
axis ratio, and concentration -- can identify many of these high-B/T discs to
yield automated classifications that agree ~70% with the visual classifications
(>90% within one BC). Both methods are used to study the bulge vs. disc
frequency as a function of four measures of galaxy 'size': luminosity, stellar
mass, velocity dispersion, and radius. All size indicators show a fall in disc

Performance of two questionnaires to measure treatment adherence in patients with Type-2 Diabetes
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Most valid methods to measure treatment adherence require time and resources, and they are not easily applied in highly demanding Primary Health Care Clinics (PHCC). The objective of this study was to determine sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, likelihood ratios, and post-test probabilities of two novel questionnaires as proxy measurements of treatment adherence in Type-2 diabetic patients.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Two questionnaires were developed by a group of experts to identify the patient's medical prescription knowledge (knowledge) and their attitudes toward treatment adherence (attitudes) as proxy measurements of adherence. The questionnaires were completed by patients receiving care in PHCC pertaining to the Mexican Institute of Social Security in Aguascalientes (Mexico). Pill count was used as gold standard. Participants were selected randomly, and their oral hypoglycemic prescriptions were studied. The main outcome measures for each questionnaire were sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, likelihood ratios, and post-test probabilities, all as an independent questionnaire test and in a serial analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Adherence prevalence was 27.0% using pill count. Knowledge questionnaire showed the highest sensitivity (68.1%) and negative predictive value (82.2%), the lowest negative likelihood ratio (0.58) and post-test probability for a negative result (0.16). Serial analysis showed the highest specificity (77.4%) and positive predictive value (40.1%) as well as the highest positive likelihood ratio (1.8) and post-test probability for a positive result (0.39).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Medical Prescription Knowledge questionnaire showed the best performance as proxy measurement to identify non-adherence in type 2 diabetic patients regarding negative predictive value, negative likelihood ratio, and post-test probability for a negative result. However, Medical Prescription Knowledge questionnaire performance may change in contexts with higher adherence prevalence. Therefore, more research is needed before using this method in other contexts.</p
Advice from a Medical Expert through the Internet on Queries about AIDS and Hepatitis: Analysis of a Pilot Experiment
BACKGROUND: Advice from a medical expert on concerns and queries expressed anonymously through the Internet by patients and later posted on the Web, offers a new type of patient–doctor relationship. The aim of the current study was to perform a descriptive analysis of questions about AIDS and hepatitis made to an infectious disease expert and sent through the Internet to a consumer-oriented Web site in the Spanish language. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Questions were e-mailed and the questions and answers were posted anonymously in the “expert-advice” section of a Web site focused on AIDS and hepatitis. We performed a descriptive study and a temporal analysis of the questions received in the first 12 months after the launch of the site. A total of 899 questions were received from December 2003 to November 2004, with a marked linear growth pattern. Questions originated in Spain in 68% of cases and 32% came from Latin America (the Caribbean, Central America, and South America). Eighty percent of the senders were male. Most of the questions concerned HIV infection (79%) with many fewer on hepatitis (17%) . The highest numbers of questions were submitted just after the weekend (37% of questions were made on Mondays and Tuesdays). Risk factors for contracting HIV infection were the most frequent concern (69%), followed by the window period for detection (12.6%), laboratory results (5.9%), symptoms (4.7%), diagnosis (2.7%), and treatment (2.2%). CONCLUSIONS: Our results confirm a great demand for this type of “ask-the-expert” Internet service, at least for AIDS and hepatitis. Factors such as anonymity, free access, and immediate answers have been key factors in its success
Are the health messages in schoolbooks based on scientific evidence? A descriptive study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Most textbooks contains messages relating to health. This profuse information requires analysis with regards to the quality of such information. The objective was to identify the scientific evidence on which the health messages in textbooks are based.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The degree of evidence on which such messages are based was identified and the messages were subsequently classified into three categories: Messages with high, medium or low levels of evidence; Messages with an unknown level of evidence; and Messages with no known evidence.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>844 messages were studied. Of this total, 61% were classified as messages with an unknown level of evidence. Less than 15% fell into the category where the level of evidence was known and less than 6% were classified as possessing high levels of evidence. More than 70% of the messages relating to "Balanced Diets and Malnutrition", "Food Hygiene", "Tobacco", "Sexual behaviour and AIDS" and "Rest and ergonomics" are based on an unknown level of evidence. "Oral health" registered the highest percentage of messages based on a high level of evidence (37.5%), followed by "Pregnancy and newly born infants" (35%). Of the total, 24.6% are not based on any known evidence. Two of the messages appeared to contravene known evidence.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Many of the messages included in school textbooks are not based on scientific evidence. Standards must be established to facilitate the production of texts that include messages that are based on the best available evidence and which can improve children's health more effectively.</p
On the dynamics of the adenylate energy system: homeorhesis vs homeostasis.
Biochemical energy is the fundamental element that maintains both the adequate turnover of the biomolecular structures and the functional metabolic viability of unicellular organisms. The levels of ATP, ADP and AMP reflect roughly the energetic status of the cell, and a precise ratio relating them was proposed by Atkinson as the adenylate energy charge (AEC). Under growth-phase conditions, cells maintain the AEC within narrow physiological values, despite extremely large fluctuations in the adenine nucleotides concentration. Intensive experimental studies have shown that these AEC values are preserved in a wide variety of organisms, both eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Here, to understand some of the functional elements involved in the cellular energy status, we present a computational model conformed by some key essential parts of the adenylate energy system. Specifically, we have considered (I) the main synthesis process of ATP from ADP, (II) the main catalyzed phosphotransfer reaction for interconversion of ATP, ADP and AMP, (III) the enzymatic hydrolysis of ATP yielding ADP, and (IV) the enzymatic hydrolysis of ATP providing AMP. This leads to a dynamic metabolic model (with the form of a delayed differential system) in which the enzymatic rate equations and all the physiological kinetic parameters have been explicitly considered and experimentally tested in vitro. Our central hypothesis is that cells are characterized by changing energy dynamics (homeorhesis). The results show that the AEC presents stable transitions between steady states and periodic oscillations and, in agreement with experimental data these oscillations range within the narrow AEC window. Furthermore, the model shows sustained oscillations in the Gibbs free energy and in the total nucleotide pool. The present study provides a step forward towards the understanding of the fundamental principles and quantitative laws governing the adenylate energy system, which is a fundamental element for unveiling the dynamics of cellular life
