The integration of engine into the wooden boat needs good knowledge ofeffective engine installation technique. Otherwise, the function of engine will notharmonic with the aims to move the boat properly to be optimum. The effectivenessof engine installation has link to engine foundation, the position of propeller axispoint at the height of keel and the stern. Two systems of engine installation, whichhave experimented and observed its effectiveness; first the lobe point of propelleraxis at the horizontal position just on the middle of the height of the “L” pillarbetween the keel and bosom of stern ceiling. Secondly, the propeller horizontal axishole in the point at the mid-height of keel-end and the ceiling of stern as the propellerposition. The result found that the first technique causes the power of engine weakeras compare to the second one; whilst the keel and engine fundation have to bemodified so that the position of engine foundation can be well on horizontal line, which caused change of the keel strength or the boat strength will be lesser. Hence,by mean the propeller axis lobe point at the mid-height between keel-end and thestern bosom found to be effective as the function of engine as power to move the boatworks better with less engine noise and vibration than the other technique

: This article aims to answer three main questions: what constitutes ethical leadership, how leadership in Malay culture in Jambi works and how the ethical leadership based from Seloko Jambi customs implemented. The results obtained are: (1) ethics in Jambi's Malay is understood as morality, (2) there are few traits, temperament, or action that a leader should not have in Malay Jambi culture, as mentioned in Seloko “Burung Kecik, Ciling Mato” or “small bird, blind eyes" (people who works only find fault with others and tell it when go everywhere), and (3) a leader must have good morals, are characterized by the following properties: sincere, gentle, fair, generous and thoughtful

Human retinal oximetry using hyperspectral imaging

    Get PDF
The aim of the work reported in this thesis was to investigate the possibility of measuring human retinal oxygen saturation using hyperspectral imaging. A direct non-invasive quantitative mapping of retinal oxygen saturation is enabled by hyperspectral imaging whereby the absorption spectra of oxygenated and deoxygenated haemoglobin are recorded and analysed. Implementation of spectral retinal imaging thus requires ophthalmic instrumentation capable of efficiently recording the requisite spectral data cube. For this purpose, a spectral retinal imager was developed for the first time by integrating a liquid crystal tuneable filter into the illumination system of a conventional fundus camera to enable the recording of narrow-band spectral images in time sequence from 400nm to 700nm. Postprocessing algorithms were developed to enable accurate exploitation of spectral retinal images and overcome the confounding problems associated with this technique due to the erratic eye motion and illumination variation. Several algorithms were developed to provide semi-quantitative and quantitative oxygen saturation measurements. Accurate quantitative measurements necessitated an optical model of light propagation into the retina that takes into account the absorption and scattering of light by red blood cells. To validate the oxygen saturation measurements and algorithms, a model eye was constructed and measurements were compared with gold-standard measurements obtained by a Co-Oximeter. The accuracy of the oxygen saturation measurements was (3.31%± 2.19) for oxygenated blood samples. Clinical trials from healthy and diseased subjects were analysed and oxygen saturation measurements were compared to establish a merit of certain retinal diseases. Oxygen saturation measurements were in agreement with clinician expectations in both veins (48%±9) and arteries (96%±5). We also present in this thesis the development of novel clinical instrument based on IRIS to perform retinal oximetry.Al-baath University, Syri

TOWARD GLOBALIZATION: AN INDONESIAN EXPERIENCE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING

    Get PDF
English language is acknowledged as a foreign language in Indonesia. Since the nation’s independence, it has been taught in secondary and tertiary education levels and later on, even in primary level, due to increasing demand of the skills in international communication. It was believed that the sooner the language is introduced, the better. Globalization that reduced country borders and gave way to interconnectedness has given more opportunities to the people in the global world, provided that they have English language skill proficiency. How has Indonesia prepared its students in the mastery of the language and how is the teaching of the language in Indonesia? Indonesian  secondary and tertiary education institutions need competent teachers  to help the students learn the language. This paper will therefore discuss, with the status of English language in Indonesia, how does Indonesia prepare the students for the globalization, in terms of language teaching and because Indonesia is a large country, with a massive number of secondary and tertiary education institutions, how collaboration and innovation in language teaching play important roles in strengthening English language teaching in Indonesia, especially as the country seeks to prepare students for global competitiveness

The Charms of the Nature vs. Realities of People Living alongside the Water in Indonesian Poetry

In Indonesia, a country in which 70% of its area is water, people relate easily to both the sea and inland water, such as rivers and lakes. Authors consequently also find inspiration in these bodies of water, expressing their admiration towards the beauty of nature. For example, while they originate from different literary eras, “Danau Toba” (Lake Toba) by Sitor Situmorang, “Sepantun Laut” (Like the Sea) by J.E. Tatengkeng, “Akulah Si Telaga” (I am the Lake) by Sapardi Djoko Damono, “Apa Kata Bintang di Laut” (What the Star Tells the Sea) by Iwan Simatupang, “Kali Martapura” (Martapura River) by Hidjaz Yamani, and “Perempuan Pesisiran” (Women on the Coasts) by Iman Sembada all reflect the dynamic portrayals of water in Indonesian literature, as a charm of nature from each poet’s perspective or a framework for criticizing the realities of the lives of the people who live alongside water. This research analyzed these authors’ interconnectedness with nature, employing the qualitative descriptive method and using ecocriticism theory, which explores how nature is depicted in the respective poems and connects human relationships to nature. The results showed that the poets easily relate to the river, lake, or sea, and aside from describing the beauty of nature based on fond memories, their poems are used as critiques of the changing relationship between humans and nature, as well as between humans and humans. Their portrayals of nature further reveal the feelings of belonging engendered by water, which they use as criticism for the destruction of nature and societal changes stemming from the need for progress

This article aims to reinterpret hedonism. There are two forms of hedonism that the author examines, namely motivational hedonism and normative hedonism. This article uses a type of qualitative research in the form of a library study carried out in libraries, work space and the researcher's residence. Data consists of various written and online literature. Data was collected using reading techniques from the various literature in question and analyzed using hermeneutic theory. This article finds that in motivational hedonism, the goal of human life is to obtain pleasure and avoid suffering with an emphasis on the second aspect. Meanwhile, in normative hedonism, the goal of human life is also to obtain pleasure and avoid suffering, but with more focus on the first aspect. These two forms of hedonism do not view pleasure as merely physical and material. This article aims to reinterpret hedonism.
