    Perception of Hazards Associated with Cooking Fuel in Building Indoor Environment

    This study assessed perception of hazards from cooking fuels in building indoor environment. One hundred questionnaires were randomly administered to selected households in high density settlement of Zaria metropolis with 96% response rate received. Results showed that females are dominant (83%) users of cooking fuels, kerosene (48.1%) and firewood (29.2%) are common types of cooking fuel use by the households. Factors that determine the use of these fuels are cost (28.2%) and types of stove (19.8%). Awareness level of associated hazards is high (62.5%) and frequency of health problems associated with pollutants (39.6%) is alarming. Opening of windows (47.9%) and isolation of cooking area from living area (42.7%) were the common control measures adopted. It is recommended that public enlightenment on health issues relating to indoor air pollution should be emphasized, as well as implementing codes for control of pollution in the indoor environment

    A new portable vibrator for plaster pouring: effect on the marginal fit at cylinder-abutment

    OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to test a new portable vibrator for plaster pouring (developed for this purpose), comparing the effect of its use on the accuracy of working cast of implant-supported restorations to the conventional vibrator. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From a master cast with 2 implants, 30 transfer moldings were made randomly and divided into three groups: Group I (GI): pouring performed in an outsourced dental laboratory with conventional plaster vibrator (10 casts), Group II (GII): pouring performed in the laboratory of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) with conventional plaster vibrator (10 casts) and Group III (GIII): pouring performed with the portable vibrator fabricated for this study (10 casts). The position of the analogue and marginal adaptation of the infrastructure were verified by testing the single screw on the master model and on the working model. The measurement of misfit was blindly performed with a precision microscope and analyzing unit, Quadra-Check 200. The data were statistically analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Holm-Sidak test (α=0.05). RESULTS: Means±standard deviations were as follows: GI: 19.19±4.73 µm; GII: 21.72±5.41 µm; GIII: 13.5±2.39 µm (P<0.05), with GIII significantly lower as compared to the other groups. CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this study, it was concluded that a greater accuracy of working cast was achieved when a portable vibrator was used for casting molds

    The specificity of phage testing for MAP — where might it fit into the diagnostic armoury?

    The current individual tools available for the diagnosis of Johne's disease are far from suitable to tackle this endemic disease. Culture, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) tests, when used together can be useful in managing the disease in the later stages of infection at a herd level. They are, however, ill-suited to detecting the causative agent Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) at the early stages of infection and at an individual level. Phage technology offers another tool in the attempt to better manage and control this disease. Phage-technology has been demonstrated to rapidly and sensitively detect and specifically identify viable MAP in the milk and blood of cattle. Although in relatively-early stages of development phage technology offers a strong addition to the armoury of tests used to detect MAP in blood and milk, and may go on to be part of ongoing control measures to reduce the burden of disease to farmers and veterinarians

    Vaccines against toxoplasma gondii : challenges and opportunities

    Development of vaccines against Toxoplasma gondii infection in humans is of high priority, given the high burden of disease in some areas of the world like South America, and the lack of effective drugs with few adverse effects. Rodent models have been used in research on vaccines against T. gondii over the past decades. However, regardless of the vaccine construct, the vaccines have not been able to induce protective immunity when the organism is challenged with T. gondii, either directly or via a vector. Only a few live, attenuated T. gondii strains used for immunization have been able to confer protective immunity, which is measured by a lack of tissue cysts after challenge. Furthermore, challenge with low virulence strains, especially strains with genotype II, will probably be insufficient to provide protection against the more virulent T. gondii strains, such as those with genotypes I or II, or those genotypes from South America not belonging to genotype I, II or III. Future studies should use animal models besides rodents, and challenges should be performed with at least one genotype II T. gondii and one of the more virulent genotypes. Endpoints like maternal-foetal transmission and prevention of eye disease are important in addition to the traditional endpoint of survival or reduction in numbers of brain cysts after challenge

    Skeletal Muscle NADPH Oxidase Is Increased and Triggers Stretch-Induced Damage in the mdx Mouse

    Recent studies have shown that oxidative stress contributes to the pathogenesis of muscle damage in dystrophic (mdx) mice. In this study we have investigated the role of NADPH oxidase as a source of the oxidative stress in these mice. The NADPH oxidase subunits gp91phox, p67phox and rac 1 were increased 2–3 fold in tibilais anterior muscles from mdx mice compared to wild type. Importantly, this increase occurred in 19 day old mice, before the onset of muscle necrosis and inflammation, suggesting that NADPH oxidase is an important source of oxidative stress in mdx muscle. In muscles from 9 week old mdx mice, gp91phox and p67phox were increased 3–4 fold and NADPH oxidase superoxide production was 2 times greater than wild type. In single fibers from mdx muscle NADPH oxidase subunits were all located on or near the sarcolemma, except for p67phox,which was expressed in the cytosol. Pharmacological inhibition of NADPH oxidase significantly reduced the intracellular Ca2+ rise following stretched contractions in mdx single fibers, and also attenuated the loss of muscle force. These results suggest that NADPH oxidase is a major source of reactive oxygen species in dystrophic muscle and its enhanced activity has a stimulatory effect on stretch-induced Ca2+ entry, a key mechanism for muscle damage and functional impairment
