The inductive research method in early Islamic tradition based on Ibn Tufayl’s Work - Hayy Ibn Yaqzan

The inductive method of research has played a significant role in scientific progress throughout history. It has been proclaimed in the history of science texts that the inductive research method was first introduced by Francis Bacon (1561-1626), a western scholar. However, there are ample evidences to show that this method was earlier developed and applied by Muslim scholars about 500 years before him. For instance, Ibn-Tufayl (1100-1185), a Muslim scholar and philosopher referred to the components of the inductive research method in his well-known novel, Hayy Ibn Yaqzan (literally, Alive son of Awake). The current paper aims to explore the features of the inductive research method mooted in the aforesaid novel. The analysis showed that Muslim scientists were aware of the features of the inductive research method, and its application was evident in their works as the case demonstrated by Ibn Tufayl. Optimization of poly(vinylidene fluoride) membranes for enhanced power density of thermally driven electrochemical cells

The thermally driven electrochemical cells (TECs) convert the applied temperature gradient (ΔT) across electrodes, in redox-based electrolytes, into electricity. We, in this report, amplify the power generation characteristics of TEC, maintained at the ΔT of 45 K, by controlling the physical and electrical nature of the polymer membrane. The conductive membrane is prepared by trapping the solution of iodide/triiodide (I−/I3 −) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [C4mim][BF4] in the mesoporous structure of poly(vinylidene fluoride) membranes. We identify the intricate dependence of TEC performance on numerous thermophysical and electrical properties including thermal conductance, porosity, thickness and ionic resistance of the membrane. Higher thickness provides better thermal resistivity maintaining the TEC at high ΔT; however, this simultaneously reduces the porosity (limiting the redox reactions at the electrodes) and augmenting the membrane resistance. Therefore, a compromise between high thermal gradient and availability of redox species at electrodes improves the maximum power density from 1.5 to 16.3 mW m−2

Statistical Neutron Emission Model for Neutrino Nuclear Response

    Get PDF
The studies of neutrino fundamental properties are widely investigated by double beta decay and inverse beta decay. Recent muon capture experiment provides promising ways to directly evaluate the neutrino nuclear responses. This study provides theoretical explanation for neutrino nuclear responses by muon capture experiment. The effects of muon binding energy towards nuclear excitation region and pre-equilibrium (PEQ) and equilibrium (EQ) neutron decay mode will be discussed. The interpretation of muon strength model by comparison of calculator output and recent experimental data may provide relevant information towards determination of nuclear matrix element (NME) and its missing parameter
