Nanometric pitch in modulated structures of twist-bend nematic liquid crystals
The extended Frank elastic energy density is used to investigate the
existence of a stable periodically modulate structure that appears as a ground
state exhibiting a twist-bend molecular arrangement. For an unbounded sample,
we show that the twist-bend nematic phase is characterized by a
heliconical structure with a pitch in the nano-metric range, in agreement with
experimental results. For a sample of finite thickness, we show that the wave
vector of the stable periodic structure depends not only on the elastic
parameters but also on the anchoring energy, easy axis direction, and the
thickness of the sample.Comment: 11 page
Photometric, Spectroscopic and Orbital Period Study of Three Early Type Semi-detached Systems: XZ Aql, UX Her and AT Peg
In this paper we present a combined photometric, spectroscopic and orbital
period study of three early-type eclipsing binary systems: XZ Aql, UX Her, and
AT Peg. As a result, we have derived the absolute parameters of their
components and, on that basis, we discuss their evolutionary states.
Furthermore, we compare their parameters with those of other binary systems and
with the theoretical models. An analysis of all available up-to-date times of
minima indicated that all three systems studied here show cyclic orbital
changes, their origin is discussed in detail. Finally, we performed a frequency
analysis for possible pulsational behavior and as a result we suggest that XZ
Aql hosts a {\delta} Scuti component.Comment: 40 pages, 16 figure
Two-year outcome of an observe-and-plan regimen for neovascular age-related macular degeneration treated with Aflibercept.
The purpose of our study was to investigate the two-year outcome of Aflibercept treatment for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), using the Observe-and-Plan regimen, an individually planned treatment regimen, based on the predictability of an individual's need for retreatment, aiming to reduce the clinical burden.
Our prospective study used the Observe-and-Plan regimen with Aflibercept to treat nAMD: Three loading doses, followed by monthly observation visits until the disease-recurrence interval was determined, which then was shortened by 2 weeks in a treatment plan for the next three injections without intermediate monitoring visits. The subsequent treatment plans were adjusted according to periodically assessed disease activity. The primary outcome measures were visual acuity changes, number of injections, and number of monitoring visits.
The study included 112 eyes of 102 patients with a mean age of 80.7 years (SD 7.6). Mean visual acuity (VA) improved from 61.8 ETDRS letters (20/60(+2)) at baseline, by 8.5, 8.0, and 6.2 letters at months 3, 12 and 24, respectively. Mean central retinal thickness was 438um at baseline, and reduced by 152um, 155um, and 150um at months 3, 12 and 24, respectively. The mean number of injections was 8.7 and 6.5 in the first and second year, respectively. The mean number of monitoring visits after baseline was 3.8 and 2.8 during the first and second year, respectively.
The Observe-and-Plan regimen significantly improved VA, while fewer monitoring visits were needed as compared to other variable dosing regimens, thus reducing the workload for chronic care management of nAMD
Antidepressant medication and ocular factors in association with the need for anti-VEGF retreatment in neovascular age-related macular degeneration.
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a key player in the pathogenesis of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) and is also involved in the final common pathway of antidepressant medication. This study investigated the relationship between the need for anti-VEGF retreatment in patients with nAMD and antidepressant medication, and the potential impact of ocular structural factors.
Data from two identical prospective 2-year treatment protocols using ranibizumab or aflibercept in a variable-dosing regimen ('Observe-and-Plan') were analysed. Retreatment requirement was compared with antidepressant medication intake (primary outcome) and a variety of ocular factors from baseline and from month 3 response (secondary outcomes), using univariate and multivariate analyses.
Of the 206 included patients (227 eyes), 19 were on antidepressant medication. Their nAMD eyes significantly more often had pigment epithelium detachment (PED, p=0.04). Multivariate analysis revealed a significant association between anti-VEGF retreatment requirement and antidepressant medication use (p=0.027), as well as thicker central retinal thickness at month 3 (p<0.0001) and month 3 PED height (p=0.001).
This study provides evidence that treatment with antidepressant medication increases the anti-VEGF retreatment requirement in patients with nAMD, possibly through the interplay of antidepressant medication, depression status and VEGF levels
Classification of radical hysterectomy adopted by the Gynecological Cancer Group of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer
The Piver classification of radical hysterectomy for the treatment of cervical cancer is outdated and misused. The Surgery Committee of the Gynecological Cancer Group of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) produced, approved, and adopted a revised classification. It is hoped that at least within the EORTC participating centers, a standardization of procedures is achieved. The clinical indications of the new classification are discussed
Time evolution of the microwave second-order response of YBaCuO powder
Transient effects in the microwave second-order response of YBaCuO powder are
investigated. The time evolution of the second harmonic signal has been
measured for about 300 s after the sample had been exposed to variations of the
DC magnetic field. We show that in different time scales the transient response
has different origin. In the time scale of milliseconds the transient response
of samples in the critical state is ascribable to processes of flux
redistribution induced by the switching on/off of the microwave field. At
longer times, the time evolution of the second harmonic signal can be ascribed
to motion of fluxons induced by the variation of the DC magnetic field. In
particular, diffusive motion of fluxons determines the response in the first 10
seconds after the stop of the magnetic field variation; magnetic relaxation
over the surface barrier determines the response in the time scale of minutes.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, submited to Physica
Study of coupling loss on bi-columnar BSCCO/Ag tapes by a.c. susceptibility measurements
Coupling losses were studied in composite tapes containing superconducting
material in the form of two separate stacks of densely packed filaments
embedded in a metallic matrix of Ag or Ag alloy. This kind of sample geometry
is quite favorable for studying the coupling currents and in particular the
role of superconducting bridges between filaments. By using a.c. susceptibility
technique, the electromagnetic losses as function of a.c. magnetic field
amplitude and frequency were measured at the temperature T = 77 K for two tapes
with different matrix composition. The length of samples was varied by
subsequent cutting in order to investigate its influence on the dynamics of
magnetic flux penetration. The geometrical factor which takes into
account the demagnetizing effects was established from a.c. susceptibility data
at low amplitudes. Losses vs frequency dependencies have been found to agree
nicely with the theoretical model developed for round multifilamentary wires.
Applying this model, the effective resistivity of the matrix was determined for
each tape, by using only measured quantities. For the tape with pure silver
matrix its value was found to be larger than what predicted by the theory for
given metal resistivity and filamentary architecture. On the contrary, in the
sample with a Ag/Mg alloy matrix, an effective resistivity much lower than
expected was determined. We explain these discrepancies by taking into account
the properties of the electrical contact of the interface between the
superconducting filaments and the normal matrix. In the case of soft matrix of
pure Ag, this is of poor quality, while the properties of alloy matrix seem to
provoke an extensive creation of intergrowths which can be actually observed in
this kind of samples.Comment: 20 pages 11 figure, submitted to Superconductor Science and

Smartphone usage by old adults: the simple evidence based on behavioural Issue
Smart phones and people are two things something not separate that from one another.
Children, adolescents and adults use smart phones. Their intensity with their smart phones varies.
Smart phones provide a variety of features, not just to receive and make long-distance calls,
activities such as self and edit it for hours, watching movies, surfing the Internet, games, social
media and others can also be done. Various data show that the cumulative time of this activity
results in a high level of smart phone usage, both in children, adolescence and adulthood. So,
what about old adult? This study aims to measure the level of old adult interaction with smart
phones against 59 respondents. Measurements using a monophobia questionnaire (NMP-Q). It
analysed data using Rasch Model and Network Psychometry. The results show that the old adult
interaction rate of the smart phone is at high, medium, and low levels
