Oxygen consumption of animals under conditions of hypokinesia

    Get PDF
The influence of hypokinesia on the oxygen consumption of rats, dog, and squirrels was investigated. Three periods of gaseous exchange were revealed in rats under conditions of a limited motor activity. During the first 10-15 days O2 consumption displayed a sharp elevation; on the 20th-30th day, it became stabilized at a higher level (in comparison with control) and it sharply rose again on the 40th-100th day. In dogs, hypokinesia produced a reduction of O2 consumption and then a tendency to its elevation was seen. A short period of physical exercises in squirrels after hypokinesia led to increased oxygen consumption at rest

    Bovine leukosis control measures

Bovine leukosis is one of the most common infectious diseases of farm animals, causing significant economic damage due to a decrease in production of livestock products, premature culling and slaughter of cows and servicing bulls. The disease needs special attention and control on behalf of the on-farm veterinarians and zootechnicians. The article briefly describes epizootic situation on bovine leukosis in the Russian Federation in 2004–2020. It also includes a report on the disease situation in “Sibirskaya Niva” LLC (the Irkutsk Oblast) for 2015–2021 and assesses effectiveness of health support and disease prevention measures taken on the farm. The paper gives a brief description of the agricultural establishment: its zoosanitary status as well as zootechnical, veterinary, therapeutic and preventive measures (disinsection, deratization, vaccination). Based on the data obtained, we found the ultimate cause of bovine leukosis on the farm: presumably, these were crossbred animals brought into the farm. In order to eradicate the disease, “Sibirskaya Niva” LLC has developed a plan on health support and disease prevention, which includes veterinary, zootechnical and economic measures. Thus, due to the actions taken from 2015 to 2019, the number of infected cows and heifers reduced by 6.42 and 2.78 times, correspondingly. At the same time, the overall number of infected animals decreased by 9.9%. Task-oriented measures taken by the state veterinary services made it possible to steadily reduce the number of infected animals by 2020. The comprehensive approach embracing the farm peculiarities has proven to be effective to quickly eliminate bovine leukosis, as the above-mentioned agricultural establishment exemplified it

Gaining the experience of liver transplantation waiting list formation is the important condition of transplant cen- ter successful work. In the era of transplant organ shortage careful medical examination of the patient before the operation and detection of unfavorable facts and transplantation contraindications are of paramount importance. At the same time evaluation of the structure of potential liver transplant recipients category allows to develop maximal effective management of waiting list patients and prevention of fatal complications before operation.

Thermal Perceptual Thresholds are typical in Autism Spectrum Disorder but Strongly Related to Intra-individual Response Variability

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are often reported to exhibit an apparent indifference to pain or temperature. Leading models suggest that this behavior is the result of elevated perceptual thresholds for thermal stimuli, but data to support these assertions are inconclusive. An alternative proposal suggests that the sensory features of ASD arise from increased intra-individual perceptual variability. In this study, we measured method-of-limits warm and cool detection thresholds in 142 individuals (83 with ASD, 59 with typical development [TD], aged 7–54 years), testing relationships with diagnostic group, demographics, and clinical measures. We also investigated the relationship between detection thresholds and a novel measure of intra-individual (trial-to-trial) threshold variability, a putative index of “perceptual noise.” This investigation found no differences in thermal detection thresholds between individuals with ASD and typical controls, despite large differences between groups in sensory reactivity questionnaires and modest group differences in intra-individual variability. Lower performance IQ, male sex, and higher intra-individual variability in threshold estimates were the most significant predictors of elevated detection thresholds. Although no psychophysical measure was significantly correlated with questionnaire measures of sensory hyporeactivity, large intra-individual variability may partially explain the elevated psychophysical thresholds seen in a subset of the ASD population

Atypical miRNA expression in temporal cortex associated with dysregulation of immune, cell cycle, and other pathways in autism spectrum disorders

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) likely involve dysregulation of multiple genes related to brain function and development. Abnormalities in individual regulatory small non-coding RNA (sncRNA), including microRNA (miRNA), could have profound effects upon multiple functional pathways. We assessed whether a brain region associated with core social impairments in ASD, the superior temporal sulcus (STS), would evidence greater transcriptional dysregulation of sncRNA than adjacent, yet functionally distinct, primary auditory cortex (PAC). METHODS: We measured sncRNA expression levels in 34 samples of postmortem brain from STS and PAC to find differentially expressed sncRNA in ASD compared with control cases. For differentially expressed miRNA, we further analyzed their predicted mRNA targets and carried out functional over-representation analysis of KEGG pathways to examine their functional significance and to compare our findings to reported alterations in ASD gene expression. RESULTS: Two mature miRNAs (miR-4753-5p and miR-1) were differentially expressed in ASD relative to control in STS and four (miR-664-3p, miR-4709-3p, miR-4742-3p, and miR-297) in PAC. In both regions, miRNA were functionally related to various nervous system, cell cycle, and canonical signaling pathways, including PI3K-Akt signaling, previously implicated in ASD. Immune pathways were only disrupted in STS. snoRNA and pre-miRNA were also differentially expressed in ASD brain. CONCLUSIONS: Alterations in sncRNA may underlie dysregulation of molecular pathways implicated in autism. sncRNA transcriptional abnormalities in ASD were apparent in STS and in PAC, a brain region not directly associated with core behavioral impairments. Disruption of miRNA in immune pathways, frequently implicated in ASD, was unique to STS.
