    Endurance and Resistance Training in Radically Treated Respiratory Cancer patients: A Pilot Study

    Introduction. Respiratory cancer and its treatment are known to contribute to muscle weakness and functional impairment. Aim. To assess the effects of rehabilitation in patients with respiratory cancer. Methods. Radically treated respiratory cancer patients were included in a 12-week multidisciplinary rehabilitation program. Results. 16 patients (age: 61 ± 7 years; FEV1: 57 ± 16% pred.) showed a reduced exercise tolerance (VO2max: 56 ± 15% pred.; 6 MWD: 67 ± 11% pred.), muscle force (PImax: 54 ± 22% pred.; QF: 67 ± 16% pred.), and quality of life (CRDQd: 17 ± 5 points; CRDQf: 16 ± 5 points). Exercise tolerance, muscle force, and quality of life improved significantly after rehabilitation. Conclusion. Radically treated patients with respiratory cancer have a decreased exercise capacity, muscle force, and quality of life. 12 weeks of rehabilitation leads to a significant improvement in exercise capacity, respiratory muscle force, and quality of life

    Acute appendicitis secondary to Enterobius vermicularis infection in a middle-aged man: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Acute appendicitis due to <it>Enterobius vermicularis </it>is very rare, affecting mostly children. Whether pinworms cause inflammation of the appendix or just appendiceal colic has been a matter of controversy.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A Caucasian 52-year-old man was referred to our Emergency Department with acute abdominal pain in his right lower quadrant. The physical and laboratory examination revealed right iliac fossa tenderness and leukocytosis with neutrophilia. An open appendectomy was performed. The pathological examination showed the lumen containing pinworms. Two oral doses of mebendazole were administered postoperatively. The follow-up to date was without incident and he was free of symptoms one year after the operation.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The finding of <it>E. vermicularis </it>in appendectomy pathological specimens is infrequent. Parasitic infections rarely cause acute appendicitis, especially in adults.</p> <p>One should keep in mind that the clinical signs of intestinal parasite infection may mimic acute appendicitis, although rare. A careful evaluation of symptoms such as pruritus ani, or eosinophilia on laboratory examination, could prevent unnecessary appendectomies.</p

    OC6 Phase I: Investigating the underprediction of low-frequency hydrodynamic loads and responses of a floating wind turbine

    Phase I of the OC6 project is focused on examining why offshore wind design tools underpredict the response (loads/motion) of the OC5-DeepCwind semisubmersible at its surge and pitch natural frequencies. Previous investigations showed that the underprediction was primarily related to nonlinear hydrodynamic loading, so two new validation campaigns were performed to separately examine the different hydrodynamic load components. In this paper, we validate a variety of tools against this new test data, focusing on the ability to accurately model the low-frequency loads on a semisubmersible floater when held fixed under wave excitation and when forced to oscillate in the surge direction. However, it is observed that models providing better load predictions in these two scenarios do not necessarily produce a more accurate motion response in a moored configuration.The authors would like to acknowledge the support of the MARINET2 project (European Union’s Horizon 2020 grant agreement 731084), which supplied the tank test time and travel support to accomplish the testing campaign.     Onychomycose à Onychocola canadensis

    Le rôle joué par les agents non dermatophytiques dans l’étiologie des onychomycoses est controversé.Une grande variété d’espèces telles que Acremonium, Aspergillus, Scopulariopsis et Scytalidium spp. ont cependant déjà fait preuve de leur responsabilité en tant qu’agents étiologiques d’onychomycoses [1]. Ce n’est qu’en 1990, que furent rapportés au Canada, les 3 premiers cas d’onycho-mycose provoquée par une moisissure jusqu’alors inconnue : Onychocola canadensis [2]. Depuis lors, plusieurs cas sporadiques ont été rapportés : 14 au Canada [3-5], 3 en NouvelleZélande [3], 4 en Grande-Bretagne [1], 9 en France [6,7], 2 en Espagne [8], un en Italie [9], 4 en Belgique [10].
