    Evolution: Complexity, uncertainty and innovation

    Complexity science provides a general mathematical basis for evolutionary thinking. It makes us face the inherent, irreducible nature of uncertainty and the limits to knowledge and prediction. Complex, evolutionary systems work on the basis of on-going, continuous internal processes of exploration, experimentation and innovation at their underlying levels. This is acted upon by the level above, leading to a selection process on the lower levels and a probing of the stability of the level above. This could either be an organizational level above, or the potential market place. Models aimed at predicting system behaviour therefore consist of assumptions of constraints on the micro-level – and because of inertia or conformity may be approximately true for some unspecified time. However, systems without strong mechanisms of repression and conformity will evolve, innovate and change, creating new emergent structures, capabilities and characteristics. Systems with no individual freedom at their lower levels will have predictable behaviour in the short term – but will not survive in the long term. Creative, innovative, evolving systems, on the other hand, will more probably survive over longer times, but will not have predictable characteristics or behaviour. These minimal mechanisms are all that are required to explain (though not predict) the co-evolutionary processes occurring in markets, organizations, and indeed in emergent, evolutionary communities of practice.     Socio-eco-evolutionary dynamics in cities

    Cities are uniquely complex systems regulated by interactions and feedbacks between nature and human society. Characteristics of human society-including culture, economics, technology and politics-underlie social patterns and activity, creating a heterogeneous environment that can influence and be influenced by both ecological and evolutionary processes. Increasing research on urban ecology and evolutionary biology has coincided with growing interest in eco-evolutionary dynamics, which encompasses the interactions and reciprocal feedbacks between evolution and ecology. Research on both urban evolutionary biology and eco-evolutionary dynamics frequently focuses on contemporary evolution of species that have potentially substantial ecological-and even social-significance. Still, little work fully integrates urban evolutionary biology and eco-evolutionary dynamics, and rarely do researchers in either of these fields fully consider the role of human social patterns and processes. Because cities are fundamentally regulated by human activities, are inherently interconnected and are frequently undergoing social and economic transformation, they represent an opportunity for ecologists and evolutionary biologists to study urban "socio-eco-evolutionary dynamics." Through this new framework, we encourage researchers of urban ecology and evolution to fully integrate human social drivers and feedbacks to increase understanding and conservation of ecosystems, their functions and their contributions to people within and outside cities

    The impact of migration on the sexual health, behaviours and attitudes of Central and East European gay/bisexual men in London

    Extensive social psychological research emphasises the importance of groups in shaping individuals' thoughts and actions. Within the child sexual abuse (CSA) literature criminal organisation has been largely overlooked, with some key exceptions. This research was a novel collaboration between academia and the UK's Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP). Starting from the premise that the group is, in itself, a form of social situation affecting abuse, it offers the first systematic situational analysis of CSA groups. In-depth behavioural data from a small sample of convicted CSA group-offenders (n =3) were analysed qualitatively to identify factors and processes underpinning CSA groups' activities and associations: group formation, evolution, identity and resources. The results emphasise CSA groups' variability, fluidity and dynamism. The foundations of a general framework are proposed for researching and assessing CSA groups and designing effective interventions. It is hoped that this work will stimulate discussion and development in this long-neglected area of CSA, helping to build a coherent knowledge-base

    A Feasibility Experiment of a W-powder Target

    The development of high‐powertargetsremains a key R&D actvity for future facilities presently under study like the Neutrino Factory, Muon Collider or upgraded high‐power super beams for long‐baseline neutrino experiments. The choice of materials to sustain the beam power ranging up to MW levels is not trivial.Granular solid targets have been proposed and are being studied as a candidate for such high-power target systems. In the recently commissioned HiRadMat facility at CERN, a feasibility experiment of a tungsten powder target was performed. The experiment was designed to explore for first time the impact of a high‐power proton beam on a static W powder target in a thimble configuration. The diagnostics of the experiment were based on remote high‐speed photography as well as on laser‐doppler vibration measurements of the target containers. Results from the experimental findings are presented in this poster

    A portrait of 4979 Otawara, target of the Rosetta space mission

    A physical portrait based on spectral and photometric data of 4979 Otawara, the first asteroid target of the Rosetta mission, is presented. The aim of this work is to investigate the composition of 4979 Otawara and to evaluate its rotation pole orientation. The spectroscopic observations obtained at the Palomar 200″ and IRTF telescopes cover the wavelength range 0.4 to 2.5 μm, and provide a definitive classification of Otawara as an S-type asteroid. An analysis of band depths and slopes places Otawara in the S(IV) subgroup, suggesting a similarity to ordinary chondrite meteorites. Moreover we present new photometric data, obtained at the Asiago Observatory and at the TNG telescope, that allow confirmation of the fast rotational period of 2.707 ± 0.005 hours, and a first indication of the spin vector of Otawara

    Novel dual-function CellDetect® staining technology: wedding morphology and tinctorial discrimination to detect cervical neoplasia

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>A persistent goal of oncologic histochemistry is to microscopically identify neoplasia tinctorially. Consequently, the newly developed CellDetect<sup>® </sup>staining technology, that appears to exhibit this property, warrants clinical evaluation. The objective of this study was to compare the diagnostic results using CellDetect<sup>® </sup>to the outcomes of standard microscopic examination based on hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining for the recognition of different squamous epithelial phenotypes of the uterine cervix.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Pairs of adjacent sections were made from 60 cervical biopsy cases that were diagnosed originally as either normal or neoplastic (CIN, SCC). One section of the pair was stained for H&E; the second section, with CellDetect<sup>®</sup>. Based on the examination of these pairs by two experienced pathologists, we investigated the following issues:(1) diagnostic agreement between the pathologists on each pair; (2) agreement between H&E and CellDetect<sup>® </sup>for each pair (3) tinctorial characteristics in micro-regions (n = 130) evaluated as either normal, reactive or neoplastic.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Qualitatively, CellDetect<sup>®</sup>-stained preparations displayed cyto-morphological detail comparable to H&E images. Tinctorially, <it>non-neoplastic </it>cells appeared green/blue when stained withCellDetect<sup>®</sup>, contrasting with cytologically <it>neoplastic </it>foci, where cells of every grade were red/magenta in color. Due to these tinctorial characteristics, even small foci of neoplasia could be readily distinguished that were inconspicuous on H&E at low magnification. In some instances, this prompted re-examination of the H&E and revision of the diagnosis. Quantitatively, we found that despite diagnostic variation between pathologists, in about 3% of the cases, each pathologist made the same diagnosis regardless of whether CellDetect<sup>® </sup>or H&E was used, i.e. there was 100% self-agreement for each pathologist between stains. Particularly noteworthy was the finding of a 0% false negative rate, coupled with a 10-15% false positive rate. Regarding specificity, the performance in <it>reactive </it>squamous processes was similar to that observed for morphologically normal squamous epithelium.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In this first order assessment of clinical applicability, CellDetect<sup>® </sup>staining technology was at least comparable to results using H&E, and perhaps surperior. CellDetect<sup>® </sup>provided a uniquely useful tinctorial clue for the detection of neoplasia, which exhibited an impressive 0% false negative rate. A more extensive, blinded study is needed to confirm these promising findings.</p

    The Main Belt Comets and ice in the Solar System

    We review the evidence for buried ice in the asteroid belt; specifically the questions around the so-called Main Belt Comets (MBCs). We summarise the evidence for water throughout the Solar System, and describe the various methods for detecting it, including remote sensing from ultraviolet to radio wavelengths. We review progress in the first decade of study of MBCs, including observations, modelling of ice survival, and discussion on their origins. We then look at which methods will likely be most effective for further progress, including the key challenge of direct detection of (escaping) water in these bodies
