We show that when Mi have separable preduals, there is a lattice isomorphism between S1 and S2 if and only if the sets f(Q1;Q2) 2 atom(Di) atom(Di) : Q1MiQ2 6= (0)g have the same cardinality. In particular, when Di is nonatomic, Si is isomorphic to the lattice of projections in L1([0; 1];m) where m is Lebesgue measure, regardless of the isomorphism classes of M1 and M2

    The Language of Mental Illness

    This paper surveys some philosophical issues with the language surrounding mental illness, but is especially focused on pejoratives relating to mental illness. I argue that though 'crazy' and similar mental illness-based epithets (MI-epithets) are not best understood as slurs, they do function to isolate, exclude, and marginalize members of the targeted group in ways similar to the harmfulness of slurs more generally. While they do not generally express the hate/contempt characteristic of weaponized uses of slurs, MI-epithets perpetuate epistemic injustice by portraying sufferers of mental illness as deserving minimal credibility. After outlining the ways in which these epithets can cause harm, I examine available legal and social remedies, and suggest that the best path going forward is to pursue a reclamation project rather than aiming to censure the use of MI-epithets

    Magnetic Field-Induced Lattice Effects in a Quasi-2D Organic Conductor Close to the Mott Metal-Insulator Transition

    We present ultra-high-resolution dilatometric studies in magnetic fields on a quasi-two-dimensional organic conductor κ\kappa-(D8-BEDT-TTF)2_{2}Cu[N(CN)2_{2}]Br, which is located close to the Mott metal-insulator (MI) transition. The obtained thermal expansion coefficient, α(T)\alpha(T), reveals two remarkable features: (i) the Mott MI transition temperature TMIT_{MI} = (13.6 ±\pm 0.6)\,K is insensitive to fields up to 10\,T, the highest applied field; (ii) for fields along the interlayer \emph{b}-axis, a magnetic-field-induced (FI) phase transition at TFIT_{FI} = (9.5 ±\pm 0.5)\,K is observed above a threshold field Hc∼H_c \sim 1 T, indicative of a spin reorientation with strong magneto-elastic coupling.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Anomalous elastic softening of SmRu_{4}P_{12} under high pressure

    The filled skutterudite compound SmRu_4P_{12} undergoes a complex evolution from a paramagnetic metal (phase I) to a probable multipolar ordering insulator (phase II) at T_{MI} = 16.5 K, then to a magnetically ordered phase (phase III) at T_{N} = 14 K. Elastic properties under hydrostatic pressures were investigated to study the nature of the ordering phases. We found that distinct elastic softening above T_{MI} is induced by pressure, giving evidence of quadrupole degeneracy of the ground state in the crystalline electric field. It also suggests that quadrupole moment may be one of the order parameters below T_{MI} under pressure. Strangely, the largest degree of softening is found in the transverse elastic constant C_{T} at around 0.5-0.6 GPa, presumably having relevancy to the competing and very different Gruneisen parameters \Omega of T_{MI} and T_{N}. Interplay between the two phase transitions is also verified by the rapid increase of T_{MI} under pressure with a considerably large \Omega of 9. Our results can be understood on the basis of the proposed octupole scenario for SmRu_4P_{12}.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
