Finite size effects in the magnetization of periodic mesoscopic systems
We calculate the orbital magnetization of a confined 2DEG as a function of
the number of electrons in the system. Size effects are investigated by
systematically increasing the area of the confining region. The results for the
finite system are compared to an infinite one, where the magnetization is
calculated in the thermodynamic limit. In all calculations the
electron-electron interaction is included in the Hartree approximation.Comment: LaTeX with 4 PostScript figures included, to appear in EP2DS 13

Dirichlet Boundary Value Problems of the Ernst Equation
We demonstrate how the solution to an exterior Dirichlet boundary value
problem of the axisymmetric, stationary Einstein equations can be found in
terms of generalized solutions of the Backlund type. The proof that this
generalization procedure is valid is given, which also proves conjectures about
earlier representations of the gravitational field corresponding to rotating
disks of dust in terms of Backlund type solutions.Comment: 22 pages, to appear in Phys. Rev. D, Correction of a misprint in

Equatorial symmetry/antisymmetry of stationary axisymmetric electrovac spacetimes
Two theorems are proved concerning how stationary axisymmetric electrovac
spacetimes that are equatorially symmetric or equatorially antisymmetric can be
characterized correctly in terms of the Ernst potentials \E and or in
terms of axis-data.Comment: 8 page
Magnetization in short-period mesoscopic electron systems
We calculate the magnetization of the two-dimensional electron gas in a
short-period lateral superlattice, with the Coulomb interaction included in
Hartree and Hartree-Fock approximations. We compare the results for a finite,
mesoscopic system modulated by a periodic potential, with the results for the
infinite periodic system. In addition to the expected strong exchange effects,
the size of the system, the type and the strength of the lateral modulation
leave their fingerprints on the magnetization.Comment: RevTeX4, 10 pages with 14 included postscript figures To be published

On smoothness of Black Saturns
We prove smoothness of the domain of outer communications (d.o.c.) of the
Black Saturn solutions of Elvang and Figueras. We show that the metric on the
d.o.c. extends smoothly across two disjoint event horizons with topology R x
S^3 and R x S^1 x S^2. We establish stable causality of the d.o.c. when the
Komar angular momentum of the spherical component of the horizon vanishes, and
present numerical evidence for stable causality in general.Comment: 47 pages, 5 figure
Renormalization of heavy-light currents in moving NRQCD
Heavy-light decays such as , and can be used to constrain the parameters of the Standard
Model and in indirect searches for new physics. While the precision of
experimental results has improved over the last years this has still to be
matched by equally precise theoretical predictions. The calculation of
heavy-light form factors is currently carried out in lattice QCD. Due to its
small Compton wavelength we discretize the heavy quark in an effective
non-relativistic theory. By formulating the theory in a moving frame of
reference discretization errors in the final state are reduced at large recoil.
Over the last years the formalism has been improved and tested extensively.
Systematic uncertainties are reduced by renormalizing the m(oving)NRQCD action
and heavy-light decay operators. The theory differs from QCD only for large
loop momenta at the order of the lattice cutoff and the calculation can be
carried out in perturbation theory as an expansion in the strong coupling
constant. In this paper we calculate the one loop corrections to the
heavy-light vector and tensor operator. Due to the complexity of the action the
generation of lattice Feynman rules is automated and loop integrals are solved
by the adaptive Monte Carlo integrator VEGAS. We discuss the infrared and
ultraviolet divergences in the loop integrals both in the continuum and on the
lattice. The light quarks are discretized in the ASQTad and highly improved
staggered quark (HISQ) action; the formalism is easily extended to other quark
actions.Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures. Published in Phys. Rev. D. Corrected a typo in

Differentially rotating disks of dust: Arbitrary rotation law
In this paper, solutions to the Ernst equation are investigated that depend
on two real analytic functions defined on the interval [0,1]. These solutions
are introduced by a suitable limiting process of Backlund transformations
applied to seed solutions of the Weyl class. It turns out that this class of
solutions contains the general relativistic gravitational field of an arbitrary
differentially rotating disk of dust, for which a continuous transition to some
Newtonian disk exists. It will be shown how for given boundary conditions (i.
e. proper surface mass density or angular velocity of the disk) the
gravitational field can be approximated in terms of the above solutions.
Furthermore, particular examples will be discussed, including disks with a
realistic profile for the angular velocity and more exotic disks possessing two
spatially separated ergoregions.Comment: 23 pages, 3 figures, submitted to 'General Relativity and

Magnetization of noncircular quantum dots
We calculate the magnetization of quantum dots deviating from circular
symmetry for noninteracting electrons or electrons interacting according to the
Hartree approximation. For few electrons the magnetization is found to depend
on their number, and the shape of the dot. The magnetization is an ideal probe
into the many-electron state of a quantum dot.Comment: 11 RevTeX pages with 6 included Postscript figure
Hysteresis effect due to the exchange Coulomb interaction in short-period superlattices in tilted magnetic fields
We calculate the ground-state of a two-dimensional electron gas in a
short-period lateral potential in magnetic field, with the Coulomb
electron-electron interaction included in the Hartree-Fock approximation. For a
sufficiently short period the dominant Coulomb effects are determined by the
exchange interaction. We find numerical solutions of the self-consistent
equations that have hysteresis properties when the magnetic field is tilted and
increased, such that the perpendicular component is always constant. This
behavior is a result of the interplay of the exchange interaction with the
energy dispersion and the spin splitting. We suggest that hysteresis effects of
this type could be observable in magneto-transport and magnetization
experiments on quantum-wire and quantum-dot superlattices.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, Revtex, to appear in Phys. Rev.
The chromosphere: gateway to the corona, or the purgatory of solar physics?
I argue that one should attempt to understand the solar chromosphere not only
for its own sake, but also if one is interested in the physics of: the corona;
astrophysical dynamos; space weather; partially ionized plasmas; heliospheric
UV radiation; the transition region. I outline curious observations which I
personally find puzzling and deserving of attention.Comment: To appear in the proceedings of the 25th NSO Workshop "Chromospheric
