    Observing the intrinsic linewidth of a quantum-cascade laser: beyond the Schawlow-Townes limit

    A comprehensive investigation of the frequency-noise spectral density of a free-running mid-infrared quantum-cascade laser is presented for the first time. It provides direct evidence of the leveling of this noise down to a white noise plateau, corresponding to an intrinsic linewidth of a few hundred Hz. The experiment is in agreement with the most recent theory on the fundamental mechanism of line broadening in quantum-cascade lasers, which provides a new insight into the Schawlow-Townes formula and predicts a narrowing beyond the limit set by the radiative lifetime of the upper level.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Indium selenide: An insight into electronic band structure and surface excitations

    We have investigated the electronic response of single crystals of indium selenide by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy and density functional theory. The loss spectrum of indium selenide shows the direct free exciton at similar to 1.3 eV and several other peaks, which do not exhibit dispersion with the momentum. The joint analysis of the experimental band structure and the density of states indicates that spectral features in the loss function are strictly related to single-particle transitions. These excitations cannot be considered as fully coherent plasmons and they are damped even in the optical limit, i.e. for small momenta. The comparison of the calculated symmetry-projected density of states with electron energy loss spectra enables the assignment of the spectral features to transitions between specific electronic states.     Energy dissipation via acoustic emission in ductile crack initiation

    This article presents a modeling approach to estimate the energy release due to ductile crack initiation in conjunction to the energy dissipation associated with the formation and propagation of transient stress waves typically referred to as acoustic emission. To achieve this goal, a ductile fracture problem is investigated computationally using the finite element method based on a compact tension geometry under Mode I loading conditions. To quantify the energy dissipation associated with acoustic emission, a crack increment is produced given a pre-determined notch size in a 3D cohesive-based extended finite element model. The computational modeling methodology consists of defining a damage initiation state from static simulations and linking such state to a dynamic formulation used to evaluate wave propagation and related energy redistribution effects. The model relies on a custom traction separation law constructed using full field deformation measurements obtained experimentally using the digital image correlation method. The amount of energy release due to the investigated first crack increment is evaluated through three different approaches both for verification purposes and to produce an estimate of the portion of the energy that radiates away from the crack source in the form of transient waves. The results presented herein propose an upper bound for the energy dissipation associated to acoustic emission, which could assist the interpretation and implementation of relevant nondestructive evaluation methods and the further enrichment of the understanding of effects associated with fracture

    Gelatin crosslinked with dehydroascorbic acid as a novel scaffold for tissue regeneration with simultaneous antitumor activity

    A porous scaffold was developed to support normal tissue regeneration in the presence of residual tumor disease. It was prepared by gelatin crosslinked with dehydroascorbic acid (DHA). A physicochemical characterization of the scaffold was carried out. SEM and mercury porosimetry revealed a high porosity and interconnection of pores in the scaffold. Enzymatic degradation provided 56% weight loss in ten days. The scaffold was also evaluated in vitro for its ability to support the growth of normal cells while hindering tumor cell development. For this purpose, primary human fibroblasts and osteosarcoma tumor cells (MG-63) were seeded on the scaffold. Fibroblasts attached the scaffold and proliferated, while the tumor cells, after an initial attachment and growth, failed to proliferate and progressively underwent cell death. This was attributed to the progressive release of DHA during the scaffold degradation and its cytotoxic activity towards tumor cells

    Il rotenone, pesticida naturale utilizzato in agricoltura biologica su una grande varietà di colture, è stato determinato quantitativamente mediante Atmosheric Pressure Chemical Ionisation Spettrometria di Massa Tandem (APCI MS/MS) nelle olive e negli oli di oliva ottenuti dopo trattamento in una prova di campo che ha interessato la cv Carolea in Calabria. La tecnica analitica ha previsto la realizzazione di esperimenti “Multiple Reaction Monitoring” (MRM) utilizzando uno standard interno ottenuto per sintesi. Le quantità rilevate sono comprese tra 9 mg/Kg di olio dopo 1 giorno dal trattamento e 0.15 mg/Kg di olio dopo 1 mese circa dal trattamento. Quest’ultimo valore è molto più elevato dei 40 µg/Kg permessi dalla legislazione italiana

    Identification of H2_2CCC as a diffuse interstellar band carrier

    We present strong evidence that the broad, diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) at 4881 and 5450\,\AA are caused by the B\,^1B1_1\,\leftarrow\,X\,^1A1_1 transition of H2_2CCC (l-C3_3H2_2). The large widths of the bands are due to the short lifetime of the B\,^1B1_1 electronic state. The bands are predicted from absorption measurements in a neon matrix and observed by cavity ring-down in the gas phase and show exact matches to the profiles and wavelengths of the two broad DIBs. The strength of the 5450\,\AA DIB leads to a l-C3_3H2_2 column density of 5×1014\sim5\times10^{14} cm2^{-2} towards HD\,183143 and 2×1014\sim2\times10^{14}\,cm2^{-2} to HD\,206267. Despite similar values of EE(BVB-V), the 4881 and 5450\,\AA DIBs in HD\,204827 are less than one third their strength in HD\,183143, while the column density of interstellar C3_3 is unusually high for HD\,204827 but undetectable for HD\,183143. This can be understood if C3_3 has been depleted by hydrogenation to species such as l-C3_3H2_2 towards HD\,183143. There are also three rotationally resolved sets of triplets of l-C3_3H2_2 in the 6150-6330\,\AA region. Simulations, based on the derived spectroscopic constants and convolved with the expected instrumental and interstellar line broadening, show credible coincidences with sharp, weak DIBs for the two observable sets of triplets. The region of the third set is too obscured by the α\alpha-band of telluric O2_2.Comment: 22 pages, 9 figure

    A New Approach for a Safe and Reproducible Seeds Positioning for Diffusing Alpha-Emitters Radiation Therapy of Squamous Cell Skin Cancer: A Feasibility Study

    The purpose of this study is to discuss how to use an external radio-opaque template in the Diffusing Alpha-emitters Radiation Therapy (DaRT) technique’s pre-planning and treatment stages. This device would help to determine the proper number of sources for tumour coverage, accounting for subcutaneous invasion and augmenting DaRT safety. The procedure will be carried out in a first phase on a phantom and then applied to a clinical case. A typical DaRT procedure workflow comprises steps like tumour measurements and delineation, source number assessment, and therapy administration. As a first step, an adhesive fiberglass mesh (spaced by 2 mm) tape was applied on the skin of the patient and employed as frame of reference. A physician contoured the lesion and marked the entrance points for the needles with a radio opaque ink marker. According to the radio opaque marks and metabolic uptake the clinical target volume was defined, and with a commercial brachytherapy treatment planning system (TPS) it was possible to simulate and adjust the spatial seeds distribution. After the implant procedure a CT was again performed to check the agreement between simulations and seeds positions. With the procedure described above it was possible to simulate a DaRT procedure on a phantom in order to train physicians and subsequently apply the novel approach on patients, outlining the major issues involved in the technique. The present work innovates and supports DaRT technique for the treatment of cutaneous cancers, improving its efficacy and safety

    Cardiac resynchronization therapy: a comparison among left ventricular bipolar, quadripolar and active fixation leads

    We evaluated the performance of 3 different left ventricular leads (LV) for resynchronization therapy: bipolar (BL), quadripolar (QL) and active fixation leads (AFL). We enrolled 290 consecutive CRTD candidates implanted with BL (n = 136) or QL (n = 97) or AFL (n = 57). Over a minimum 10 months follow-up, we assessed: (a) composite technical endpoint (TE) (phrenic nerve stimulation at 8 [email protected] ms, safety margin between myocardial and phrenic threshold <2V, LV dislodgement and failure to achieve the target pacing site), (b) composite clinical endpoint (CE) (death, hospitalization for heart failure, heart transplantation, lead extraction for infection), (c) reverse remodeling (RR) (reduction of end systolic volume >15%). Baseline characteristics of the 3 groups were similar. At follow-up the incidence of TE was 36.3%, 14.3% and 19.9% in BL, AFL and QL, respectively (p < 0.01). Moreover, the incidence of RR was 56%, 64% and 68% in BL, AFL and QL respectively (p = 0.02). There were no significant differences in CE (p = 0.380). On a multivariable analysis, \u201cnon-BL leads\u201d was the single predictor of an improved clinical outcome. QL and AFL are superior to conventional BL by enhancing pacing of the target site: AFL through prevention of lead dislodgement while QL through improved management of phrenic nerve stimulation
