Differential susceptibility to fathersā€™ care and involvement: The moderating effect of infant reactivity

    Get PDF
The differential susceptibility hypothesis suggests that children differ in their susceptibility to the influence of both positive and negative environmental factors. Children with reactive temperaments are hypothesised to be particularly susceptible to environmental influences, both for better and for worse. The present study sought to investigate whether infant temperament moderates the influence of fathers on child prosocial and problem behaviours. In a large prospective population study (Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children), 5064 children were followed between the ages of six and 81 months (6Ā¾ years). Infant temperament, child behaviours, and fathersā€™ involvement and depression were assessed

Modal Dispersion Phase Matching Over 7 Mm Length In Overdamped Polymeric Channel Waveguides

Phase-matched second harmonic generation over 7 mm is demonstrated using the modal dispersion of a composite 4-dimethylamino-4\u27-nitrostilbene/polyetherimde channel waveguide. For a l-mm-long sample a record figure of merit for polymers of eta=P-2 omega/(P(omega)L(2))=14%/W cm(2) was measured at 1550 nm. This is comparable to the value reported for LiNbO3 at that wavelength. The efficiency in longer samples is limited by fundamental and harmonic waveguide-losses

Standardization of Assay Procedures for Analysis of the CSF Biomarkers Amyloid Ī²(1-42), Tau, and Phosphorylated Tau in Alzheimer's Disease: Report of an International Workshop

    Get PDF
Large variation in assay performance and outcomes of CSF AĪ²1-42, total Tau (Tau), and phosphorylated Tau (pTau) (at amino acid 181) levels is observed between laboratories. The aim of this study was to assess the differences in assay procedures between several experienced international laboratories, as potential sources of error. 14 groups performed the AĪ²42, Tau, and pTau assays according to the guidelines of the manufacturer. Differences in analytical procedures between the laboratories were monitored. At least 23 items in assay procedures were identified that varied between the laboratories, including procedures for washing, pipetting, incubation, finishing, and sample handing. In general, the inter- and intra-assay variation between the groups was generally below 10% for all three assays. We concluded that 17 international centers that use the same assays for AĪ²42, Tau and pTau on a regular basis do not uniformly adhere to the procedures recommended by the manufacturer. For harmonization of intercenter results of these biomarkers standardization of protocols is highly needed

Optimal Parameters of Deep Brain Stimulation in Essential Tremor:A Meta-Analysis and Novel Programming Strategy

    Get PDF
The programming of deep brain stimulation (DBS) parameters for tremor is laborious and empirical. Despite extensive efforts, the end-result is often suboptimal. One reason for this is the poorly understood relationship between the stimulation parameters' voltage, pulse width, and frequency. In this study, we aim to improve DBS programming for essential tremor (ET) by exploring a new strategy. At first, the role of the individual DBS parameters in tremor control was characterized using a meta-analysis documenting all the available parameters and tremor outcomes. In our novel programming strategy, we applied 10 random combinations of stimulation parameters in eight ET-DBS patients with suboptimal tremor control. Tremor severity was assessed using accelerometers and immediate and sustained patient-reported outcomes (PRO's), including the occurrence of side-effects. The meta-analysis showed no substantial relationship between individual DBS parameters and tremor suppression. Nevertheless, with our novel programming strategy, a significantly improved (accelerometer p = 0.02, PRO p = 0.02) and sustained (p = 0.01) tremor suppression compared to baseline was achieved. Less side-effects were encountered compared to baseline. Our pilot data show that with this novel approach, tremor control can be improved in ET patients with suboptimal tremor control on DBS. In addition, this approach proved to have a beneficial effect on stimulation-related complications

This demo/poster paper provides an overview of a Software-as-a-Service platform prototype for data integration on the Web ā€“ The Linked Data AppStore (LD-AppStore). It builds upon Linked Data technologies, targets data scientists/engineers and data integration application developers, and aims to provide a solution for simplifying tasks such as data transformation, querying, entity extraction, data visualization, crawling, etc. This paper focuses on the overall architecture of the LD-AppStore, basic data operations supported by the current prototype, and outlines the demonstration of the prototype.publishedVersio

Droplet fragmentation: 3D imaging of a previously unidentified pore-scale process during multiphase flow in porous media

    Get PDF
Using X-ray computed microtomography, we have visualized and quantified the in situ structure of a trapped nonwetting phase (oil) in a highly heterogeneous carbonate rock after injecting a wetting phase (brine) at low and high capillary numbers. We imaged the process of capillary desaturation in 3D and demonstrated its impacts on the trapped nonwetting phase cluster size distribution. We have identified a previously unidentified pore-scale event during capillary desaturation. This pore-scale event, described as droplet fragmentation of the nonwetting phase, occurs in larger pores. It increases volumetric production of the nonwetting phase after capillary trapping and enlarges the fluidāˆ’fluid interface, which can enhance mass transfer between the phases. Droplet fragmentation therefore has implications for a range of multiphase flow processes in natural and engineered porous media with complex heterogeneous pore spaces
