Determination of trace elements in the plants of Mt. Bozdag, Izmir, Turkey
The aim of this study was to determine the current level of atmospheric heavy metal content on the Bozdag Mountain of the Aegean Region, Turkey. Twenty nine different plants were selected to study their potential as biomonitors of trace elements such as Ni, Zn, Fe, Pb, Mn and Cd (μg g-1, dry weight). The samples were collected from two different altitudes of Mt. Bozdag. The concentrations of trace elements were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. The mean concentrations determined at 1000 m altitude ranged from 0.025 to 1.609, 0.232 to 0.731, 0.578 to 5.983, 0.287 to 0.565 and 0.176 to 2.659 (μg g-1, dry weight), for Ni, Zn, Fe, Pb and Mn, respectively. At the altitude of 1600 m, the values ranged from 0.023 to 0.939, 0.258 to 1.254, 0.839 to 5.176, 0.301 to 1.341 and 0.405 to 3.351 (μg g-1, dry weight) for Ni, Zn, Fe, Pb and Mn, respectively. No Cd was detected at either altitude. Statistical significance was determined by the independent sample t-test and comparisons were made in order to determine if there were any differences between the averages of herbaceous and woody plants.
Irreversible and reversible modes of operation of deterministic ratchets
We discuss a problem of optimization of the energetic efficiency of a simple
rocked ratchet. We concentrate on a low-temperature case in which the
particle's motion in a ratchet potential is deterministic. We show that the
energetic efficiency of a ratchet working adiabatically is bounded from above
by a value depending on the form of ratchet potential. The ratchets with
strongly asymmetric potentials can achieve ideal efficiency of unity without
approaching reversibility. On the other hand we show that for any form of the
ratchet potential a set of time-protocols of the outer force exist under which
the operation is reversible and the ideal value of efficiency is also achieved.
The mode of operation of the ratchet is still quasistatic but not adiabatic.
The high values of efficiency can be preserved even under elevated
temperatures
Efecto de la temperatura de molturación sobre la composición y calidad del aceite de oliva virgen
The objective of the current study was to assess the influence of a modified crushing process and kneading operation on the quality parameters, volatile compounds, and the fatty acid and sterol profiles of virgin olive oil from the Edremit yaglik variety. In the study, olive oil samples were produced in two different processes. The first one was produced without malaxation and the second one was produced with the malaxing process. During crushing, the effect of different temperatures was tested. The results demonstrate that different crushing temperatures generally did not affect the amount of free fatty acids, or peroxide value. Total phenol contents were positively affected by the additional malaxation process. Fatty acids and sterol composition were not significantly altered at different crushing temperatures or during the subsequent malaxation application. PCA enabled a clear classification of the oils obtained from different processing techniques.El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar la influencia de un proceso de molturación modificado y de la etapa de batido sobre los parámetros de calidad, los componentes volátiles, los ácidos grasos y el perfil de esteroles de aceites de oliva virgen de la variedad Edremit yaglik. En este estudio, las muestras de aceite de oliva se obtuvieron mediante dos procesos diferentes con y sin malaxación. Durante la trituración, se probó el efecto de diferentes temperaturas. Los resultados demostraron que las diferentes temperaturas de trituración, en general, no mostraron tener efecto sobre la cantidad de ácidos grasos libres o el Ãndice de peróxido. El contenido total de fenoles se vio afectado positivamente por el empleo de malaxación. La composición de ácidos grasos y de esteroles no se vieron afectados significativamente por el aumento de la temperatura en la trituración ni durante el proceso de malaxación. PCA permitió una clasificación clara de los aceites obtenidos mediante las diferentes técnicas de procesamiento
Three and four current reversals versus temperature in correlation ratchets with a simple sawtooh potential
Transport of Brownian particles on a simple sawtooth potential subjected to
both unbiased thermal and nonequilibrium symmetric three-level Markovian noise
is considered. The new effects of three and four current reversals as a
function of temperature are established in such correlation ratchets. The
parameter space coordinates of the fixed points associated with these current
reversals and the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of the

TSSK3, a novel target for male contraception, is required for spermiogenesis
We have previously shown that members of the family of testis-specific serine/threonine kinases (TSSKs) are post-meiotically expressed in testicular germ cells and in mature sperm in mammals. The restricted post-meiotic expression of TSSKs as well as the importance of phosphorylation in signaling processes strongly suggest that TSSKs have an important role in germ cell differentiation and/or sperm function. This prediction has been supported by the reported sterile phenotype of the TSSK6 knock-out (KO) mice and of the double TSSK1/TSSK2 KO. The aim of this study was to develop KO mouse models of TSSK3 and to validate this kinase as a target for the development of a male contraceptive. We used CRISPR/Cas9 technology to generate the TSSK3 KO allele on B6D2F1 background mice. Male heterozygous pups were used to establish three independent TSSK3 KO lines. After natural mating of TSSK3 KO males, females that presented a plug (indicative of mating) were monitored for the following 24 days and no pregnancies or pups were found. Sperm numbers were drastically reduced in all three KO lines and, remarkably, round spermatids were detected in the cauda epididymis of KO mice. From the small population of sperm recovered, severe morphology defects were detected. Our results indicate an essential role of TSSK3 in spermiogenesis and support this kinase as a suitable candidate for the development of novel nonhormonal male contraceptives.Fil: Nayyab, Saman. Quantum Ratchets
The concept of thermal ratchets is extended to the system governed by quantum
mechanics. We study a tight-binding model with an asymmetric periodic potential
contacting with a heat bath under an external oscillating field as a specific
example of quantum ratchet. Dynamics of a density operator of this system is
studied numerically by using the quantum Liouville equation. Finite net current
is found in the non-equilibrium steady state. The direction of the current
