Longitudinally diode-pumped Nd:YAG double-clad planar waveguide laser
We report the demonstration of a near-diffraction-limited, compact, diode-end-pumped double-clad planar waveguide Nd:YAG laser. Efficient laser operation was achieved for the three dominant Nd3+ transitions at 1.064”m 0.946”m, and 1.32”m, with TE polarised output powers of 1.33W, 0.57W, and 0.33W for the available output couplers. The output beam from the monolithic plane-plane laser cavity had measured M2 values of 1.0 and 1.8, perpendicular and parallel to the plane of the waveguide respectively
Reactions at polymer interfaces: A Monte Carlo Simulation
Reactions at a strongly segregated interface of a symmetric binary polymer
blend are investigated via Monte Carlo simulations. End functionalized
homopolymers of different species interact at the interface instantaneously and
irreversibly to form diblock copolymers. The simulations, in the framework of
the bond fluctuation model, determine the time dependence of the copolymer
production in the initial and intermediate time regime for small reactant
concentration . The results are compared to
recent theories and simulation data of a simple reaction diffusion model. For
the reactant concentration accessible in the simulation, no linear growth of
the copolymer density is found in the initial regime, and a -law is
observed in the intermediate stage.Comment: to appear in Macromolecule
A convenient band-gap interpolation technique and an improved band line-up model for InGaAlAs on InP
The band-gap energy and the band line-up of InGaAlAs quaternary compound material on InP are essential information for the theoretical study of physical properties and the design of optoelectronics devices operating in the long-wavelength communication window. The band-gap interpolation of In1-x-y Ga (x) Al (y) As on InP is known to be a challenging task due to the observed discrepancy of experimental results arising from the bowing effect. Besides, the band line-up results of In1-x-y Ga (x) Al (y) As on InP based on previously reported models have limited success by far. In this work, we propose an interpolation solution using the single-variable surface bowing estimation interpolation method for the fitting of experimentally measured In1-x-y Ga (x) Al (y) As band-gap data with various degree of bowing using the same set of input parameters. The suggested solution provides an easier and more physically interpretable way to determine not only lattice matched, but also strained band-gap energy of In1-x-y Ga (x) Al (y) As on InP based on the experimental results. Interpolated results from this convenient method show a more favourable match to multiple independent experiment data sets measured under different temperature conditions as compared to those obtained from the commonly used weighted-sum approach. On top of that, extended framework of the model-solid theory for the band line-up of In1-x-y Ga (x) Al (y) As/InP heterostructure is proposed. Our model-solid theory band line-up result using the proposed extended framework has shown an improved accuracy over those without the extension. In contrast to some previously reported works, it is worth noting that the band line-up result based on our proposed extended model-solid theory has also shown to be more accurate than those given by Harrison's mode
In-medium mass from the reaction
Data on the photoproduction of mesons on nuclei have been
re-analyzed in a search for in-medium modifications. The data were taken with
the Crystal Barrel(CB)/TAPS detector system at the ELSA accelerator facility in
Bonn. First results from the analysis of the data set were published by D.
Trnka et al. in Phys. Rev. Lett 94 (2005) 192303 \cite{david}, claiming a
lowering of the mass in the nuclear medium by 14 at normal nuclear
matter density. The extracted line shape was found to be sensitive to
the background subtraction. For this reason a re-analysis of the same data set
has been initiated and a new method has been developed to reduce the background
and to determine the shape and absolute magnitude of the background directly
from the data. Details of the re-analysis and of the background determination
are described. The signal on the target, extracted in the
re-analysis, does not show a deviation from the corresponding line shape on a
target, measured as reference. The earlier claim of an in-medium mass
shift is thus not confirmed. The sensitivity of the line shape to
different in-medium modification scenarios is discussed.Comment: 13 pages and 11 figures, submitted for publicatio
Modification of the -Meson Lifetime in Nuclear Matter
The photo production of mesons on the nuclei C, Ca, Nb and Pb has
been measured using the Crystal Barrel/TAPS detector at the ELSA tagged photon
facility in Bonn. The dependence of the meson cross section on the
nuclear mass number has been compared with three different types of models, a
Glauber analysis, a BUU analysis of the Giessen theory group and a calculation
by the Valencia theory group. In all three cases, the inelastic width
is found to be at normal nuclear matter density for an
average 3-momentum of 1.1 GeV/c. In the restframe of the meson, this
inelastic width corresponds to a reduction of the lifetime by
a factor . For the first time, the momentum dependent N
cross section has been extracted from the experiment and is in the range of 70
mb.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Photoproduction of pi0 omega off protons for E(gamma) < 3 GeV
Differential and total cross-sections for photoproduction of gamma proton to
proton pi0 omega and gamma proton to Delta+ omega were determined from
measurements of the CB-ELSA experiment, performed at the electron accelerator
ELSA in Bonn. The measurements covered the photon energy range from the
production threshold up to 3GeV.Comment: 8 pages, 13 figure
Expression and Differential Responsiveness of Central Nervous System Glial Cell Populations to the Acute Phase Protein Serum Amyloid A
Acute-phase response is a systemic reaction to environmental/inflammatory insults and involves hepatic production of acute-phase proteins, including serum amyloid A (SAA). Extrahepatically, SAA immunoreactivity is found in axonal myelin sheaths of cortex in Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis (MS), although its cellular origin is unclear. We examined the responses of cultured rat cortical astrocytes, microglia and oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) to master pro-inflammatory cytokine tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-\u3b1 and lipopolysaccaride (LPS). TNF-\u3b1 time-dependently increased Saa1 (but not Saa3) mRNA expression in purified microglia, enriched astrocytes, and OPCs (as did LPS for microglia and astrocytes). Astrocytes depleted of microglia were markedly less responsive to TNF-\u3b1 and LPS, even after re-addition of microglia. Microglia and enriched astrocytes showed complementary Saa1 expression profiles following TNF-\u3b1 or LPS challenge, being higher in microglia with TNF-\u3b1 and higher in astrocytes with LPS. Recombinant human apo-SAA stimulated production of both inflammatory mediators and its own mRNA in microglia and enriched, but not microglia-depleted astrocytes. Co-ultramicronized palmitoylethanolamide/luteolin, an established anti-inflammatory/neuroprotective agent, reduced Saa1 expression in OPCs subjected to TNF-\u3b1 treatment. These last data, together with past findings suggest that co-ultramicronized palmitoylethanolamide/luteolin may be a novel approach in the treatment of inflammatory demyelinating disorders like MS
IL-21 receptor signaling is integral to the development of Th2 effector responses in vivo
Interleukin 21 (IL-21) is a member of the common gamma-chain family of cytokines, which influence a broad spectrum of immunologic responses. A number of studies have examined the function of IL-21, but its specific role in Th1/Th2-cell differentiation and related effector responses remains to be clarified. Thus, we generated IL-21R-deficient mice and have investigated the role of IL-21R signaling using a series of in vivo experimentally induced disease models. We first addressed the role of IL-21R signaling in Th2 immune responses by examining allergic airway inflammation, and Nippostrongylus brasiliensis and Heligmosomoides polygyrus antihelminth responses. In each of these systems, IL-21R signaling played a clear role in the development of Th2 responses. Comparatively, IL-21R signaling was not required for the containment of Leishmania major infection or the development of experimental autoimmune myocarditis, indicative of competent Th1 and Th17 responses, respectively. Adoptive transfer of T cells and analysis of IL-21R+/+/IL-21R-/- chimera mice revealed that IL-21R-signaling was central to Th2-cell survival or migration to peripheral tissues. Overall, our data show IL-21 plays a crucial role in supporting polarized Th2 responses in vivo, while appearing superfluous for Th1 and Th17 responses
