Experiential learning in virtues ethics through a case study: The 'St. Albans Family Enterprises'
Teaching business ethics effectively may prepare future leaders and managers to better deal with delicate situations that they might face in the workplace. However, such an aim is one of the biggest challenges that educators at universities are called on to solve. An increasing number of scholars are invoking the role of prudence in the virtue ethics context as a viable approach to teach students how to manage ethical dilemmas.
In this regard, this paper presents the âSt. Albans Family Enterpriseâ case study that can serve as an instrument to help students and practitioners develop their ethical decision-making ability and to foster a disposition towards applying sound judgment or what can be called in classical terms, prudence.
The paper also offers guidance to educators about how the case can be used for teaching purposes, and explains the implications of exercising practical wisdom (prudence) within a virtue ethics framework
Impact of electronic correlations on the equation of state and transport in -Fe
We have obtained the equilibrium volumes, bulk moduli, equations of state of
the ferromagnetic cubic and paramagnetic hexagonal phases
of iron in close agreement with experiment using an ab initio dynamical
mean-field theory approach. The local dynamical correlations are shown to be
crucial for a successful description of the ground-state properties of
paramagnetic -Fe. Moreover, they enhance the effective mass of the
quasiparticles and reduce their lifetimes across the
transition leading to a step-wise increase of the resistivity, as observed in
experiment. The calculated magnitude of the jump is significantly
underestimated, which points to non-local correlations. The implications of our
results for the superconductivity and non-Fermi-liquid behavior of
-Fe are discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
What ethics can say on artificial intelligence: Insights from a systematic literature review
The abundance of literature on ethical concerns regarding artificial intelligence (AI) highlights the need to systematize, integrate, and categorize existing efforts through a systematic literature review. The article aims to investigate prevalent concerns, proposed solutions, and prominent ethical approaches within the field. Considering 309 articles from the beginning of the publications in this field up until December 2021, this systematic literature review clarifies what the ethical concerns regarding AI are, and it charts them into two groups: (i) ethical concerns that arise from the design of AI and (ii) ethical concerns that arise from human-AI interactions. The analysis of the obtained sample highlights the most recurrent ethical concerns. Finally, it exposes the main proposals of the literature to handle the ethical concerns according to the main ethical approaches. It interprets the findings to lay the foundations for future research on the ethics of AI
Electronic correlations in vanadium chalcogenides: BaVSe3 versus BaVS3
Albeit structurally and electronically very similar, at low temperature the
quasi-one-dimensional vanadium sulfide BaVS3 shows a metal-to-insulator
transition via the appearance of a charge-density-wave state, while BaVSe3
apparently remains metallic down to zero temperature. This different behavior
upon cooling is studied by means of density functional theory and its
combination with the dynamical mean-field theory and the rotationally-invariant
slave-boson method. We reveal several subtle differences between these
chalcogenides that provide indications for the deviant behavior of BaVSe3 at
low temperature. In this regard, a smaller Hubbard U in line with an increased
relevance of the Hund's exchange J plays a vital role.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, published versio
Orthogonal Polynomial Representation of Imaginary-Time Green's Functions
We study the expansion of single-particle and two-particle imaginary-time
Matsubara Green's functions of quantum impurity models in the basis of Legendre
orthogonal polynomials. We discuss various applications within the dynamical
mean-field theory (DMFT) framework. The method provides a more compact
representation of the Green's functions than standard Matsubara frequencies and
therefore significantly reduces the memory-storage size of these quantities.
Moreover, it can be used as an efficient noise filter for various physical
quantities within the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solvers
recently developed for DMFT and its extensions. In particular, we show how to
use it for the computation of energies in the context of realistic DMFT
calculations in combination with the local density approximation to the density
functional theory (LDA+DMFT) and for the calculation of lattice
susceptibilities from the local irreducible vertex function.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figure
On infrared divergences in spin glasses
By studying the structure of infrared divergences in a toy propagator in the
replica approach to the Ising spin glass below , we suggest a possible
cancellation mechanism which could decrease the degree of singularity in the
loop expansion.Comment: 13 pages, Latex , revised versio
Between 1996 and 2003, 25 patients (26 extremities) underwent decompression of the radial tunnel. All procedures were performed at the same surgeon and the same institution using posterior approach. The total 25 patients were available for follow-up evaluation alter surgery (range 4 months - 6 years and 4 months) with average of 22 months. The outcomes was determined using the original criteria of Roles and Mausdley, 12 patients were rated as excellent (46.15%), 9 patients has good results (34.61%) and 5 patients had fair results. Eleven patients were treated previously of tennis elbow. Most of the patients were satisfied and felt subjectively improved by the surgery. They obtained pain relief and better functional status after surgery
Interaction-enhanced nesting in Spin-Fermion and Fermi-Hubbard models
The spin-fermion (SF) model postulates that the dominant coupling between
low-energy fermions in near critical metals is mediated by collective spin
fluctuations (paramagnons) peaked at the N\'{e}el wave vector, ,
connecting hot spots on opposite sides of the Fermi surface. It has been argued
that strong correlations at hot spots lead to a Fermi surface deformation (FSD)
featuring flat regions and increased nesting. This conjecture was confirmed in
the perturbative self-consistent calculations when the paramagnon propagator
dependence on momentum deviation from is given by . Using diagrammatic Monte Carlo (diagMC) technique we show
that such a dependence holds only at temperatures orders of magnitude smaller
than any other energy scale in the problem, indicating that a different
mechanism may be at play. Instead, we find that a dependence yields a robust finite- scenario for achieving FSD. To
link phenomenological and microscopic descriptions, we applied the connected
determinant diagMC method to the Hubbard model and found that in this
case: (i) the FSD is not very pronounced, and, instead, it is the lines of
zeros of the renormalized dispersion relation that deform towards nesting; (ii)
this phenomenon appears at large before the formation of electron and
hole pockets; (iii) the static spin susceptibility is well described by
. Flat FS regions yield a non-trivial
scenario for realizing a non-Fermi liquid state.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
