Notitie voor helpdeskvraag flowchart dierlijke bijproducten

    Get PDF

Formation of rings in galactic discs by infalling small companions

    Get PDF
We use N-body simulations to study the formation of rings in a disc galaxy by the impact of a small spherical companion. Both barred and nonbarred target discs are considered. We discuss the effect of the properties of the target disc (distribution of mass in the disc, velocity dispersion, etc.) as well as of the mass and orbit of the companion on the properties of the rings, such as their amplitude, width, shape, expansion velocity and lifetime. In particular the amplitude, width, lifetime and expansion velocity of the first ring increase considerably with companion mass, and so does the expansion velocity of the particles in it and the total extent of the disc after the interaction. We also discuss the formation and evolution of spokes and show that they can be caused by companions of relatively small mass. In our three examples of oblique impacts on barred target galaxies we note important transient displacements of the bar, as well as changes of its pattern speed and size. An asymmetric pseudoring is formed in each case, and during the first stages of its evolution the bar forms part of it.Comment: 21 pages Latex, 22 figures, of which 7 as separate gif-files. Unravelling the Dodecahedral Spaces

The hyperbolic dodecahedral space of Weber and Seifert has a natural non-positively curved cubulation obtained by subdividing the dodecahedron into cubes. We show that the hyperbolic dodecahedral space has a 6-sheeted irregular cover with the property that the canonical hypersurfaces made up of the mid-cubes give a very short hierarchy. Moreover, we describe a 60-sheeted cover in which the associated cubulation is special. We also describe the natural cubulation and covers of the spherical dodecahedral space (aka Poincar\'e homology sphere).Comment: 15 pages + 6 pages appendix, 7 figures, 4 table

The early identification of risk factors on the pathway to school dropout in the SIODO study:A sequential mixed-methods study

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: School dropout is a persisting problem with major socioeconomic consequences. Although poor health probably contributes to pathways leading to school dropout and health is likely negatively affected by dropout, these issues are relatively absent on the public health agenda. This emphasises the importance of integrative research aimed at identifying children at risk for school dropout at an early stage, discovering how socioeconomic status and gender affect health-related pathways that lead to dropout and developing a prevention tool that can be used in public health services for youth. METHODS/DESIGN: The SIODO study is a sequential mixed-methods study. A case–control study will be conducted among 18 to 24 year olds in the south of the Netherlands (n = 580). Data are currently being collected from compulsory education departments at municipalities (dropout data), regional public health services (developmental data from birth onwards) and an additional questionnaire has been sent to participants (e.g. personality data). Advanced analyses, including cluster and factor analyses, will be used to identify children at risk at an early stage. Using the quantitative data, we have planned individual interviews with participants and focus groups with important stakeholders such as parents, teachers and public health professionals. A thematic content analysis will be used to analyse the qualitative data. DISCUSSION: The SIODO study will use a life-course perspective, the ICF-CY model to group the determinants and a mixed-methods design. In this respect, the SIODO study is innovative because it both broadens and deepens the study of health-related determinants of school dropout. It examines how these determinants contribute to socioeconomic and gender differences in health and contributes to the development of a tool that can be used in public health practice to tackle the problem of school dropout at its roots

Mass Models for Spiral Galaxies from 2-D Velocity Maps

We model the mass distributions of 40 high surface brightness spiral galaxies inside their optical radii, deriving parameters of mass models by matching the predicted velocities to observed velocity maps. We use constant mass-to-light disk and bulge models, and we have tried fits with no halo and with three different halo density profiles. The data require a halo in most, but not all, cases, while in others the best fit occurs with negligible mass in the luminous component, which we regard as unphysical. All three adopted halo profiles lead to fits of about the same quality, and our data therefore do not constrain the functional form of the halo profile. The halo parameters display large degeneracies for two of the three adopted halo functions, but the separate luminous and dark masses are better constrained. However, the fitted disk and halo masses vary substantially between the adopted halo models, indicating that even high quality 2-D optical velocity maps do not provide significant constraints on the dark matter content of a galaxy. We demonstrate that data from longslit observations are likely to provide still weaker constraints. We conclude that additional information is needed in order to constrain the separate disk and halo masses in a galaxy.Comment: 41 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A

CD1d-dependent immune suppression mediated by regulatory B cells through modulations of iNKT cells

    Get PDF
Regulatory B cells (Breg) express high levels of CD1d that presents lipid antigens to invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells. The function of CD1d in Breg biology and iNKT cell activity during inflammation remains unclear. Here we show, using chimeric mice, cell depletion and adoptive cell transfer, that CD1d–lipid presentation by Bregs induces iNKT cells to secrete interferon (IFN)-γ to contribute, partially, to the downregulation of T helper (Th)1 and Th17-adaptive immune responses and ameliorate experimental arthritis. Mice lacking CD1d-expressing B cells develop exacerbated disease compared to wild-type mice, and fail to respond to treatment with the prototypical iNKT cell agonist α-galactosylceramide. The absence of lipid presentation by B cells alters iNKT cell activation with disruption of metabolism regulation and cytokine responses. Thus, we identify a mechanism by which Bregs restrain excessive inflammation via lipid presentation

A Practical Cryptanalysis of the Algebraic Eraser

    Get PDF
Anshel, Anshel, Goldfeld and Lemieaux introduced the Colored Burau Key Agreement Protocol (CBKAP) as the concrete instantiation of their Algebraic Eraser scheme. This scheme, based on techniques from permutation groups, matrix groups and braid groups, is designed for lightweight environments such as RFID tags and other IoT applications. It is proposed as an underlying technology for ISO/IEC 29167-20. SecureRF, the company owning the trademark Algebraic Eraser, has presented the scheme to the IRTF with a view towards standardisation. We present a novel cryptanalysis of this scheme. For parameter sizes corresponding to claimed 128-bit security, our implementation recovers the shared key using less than 8 CPU hours, and less than 64MB of memory.Comment: 15 pages.
