    The contributions of oceanic and atmospheric variability to spatially widespread summer droughts in the contiguous United States (hereafter, pan-CONUS droughts) are investigated using 16-member ensembles of the Community Climate Model version 3 (CCM3) forced with observed sea surface temperatures (SSTs) from 1856 to 2012. The employed SST forcing fields are either (i) global or restricted to the (ii) tropical Pacific or (iii) tropical Atlantic to isolate the impacts of these two ocean regions on pan-CONUS droughts. Model results show that SST forcing of pan-CONUS droughts originates almost entirely from the tropical Pacific because of atmospheric highs from the northern Pacific to eastern North America established by La Nia conditions, with little contribution from the tropical Atlantic. Notably, in all three model configurations, internal atmospheric variability influences pan-CONUS drought occurrence by as much or more than the ocean forcing and can alone cause pan-CONUS droughts by establishing a dominant high centered over the US montane West. Similar results are found for the Community Atmosphere Model version 5 (CAM5). Model results are compared to the observational record, which supports model-inferred contributions to pan-CONUS droughts from La Nias and internal atmospheric variability. While there may be an additional association with warm Atlantic SSTs in the observational record, this association is ambiguous due to the limited number of observed pan-CONUS. The ambiguity thus opens the possibility that the observational results are limited by sampling over the 20th-century and not at odds with the suggested dominance of Pacific Ocean forcing in the model ensembles

    The construction, negotiation and dissemination of cultural heritage in the digital era can take advantage of several approaches, including Virtual Reality (VR). Leveraging on the provision of contextualized multimedia content, VR can foster awareness about the histories of specific times and places, encouraging personal interpretative processes.This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of “One Day at the Sands”, a VR application aimed at conveying the atmosphere of one of the most famous casinos in Las Vegas from the 1950s onwards. First, we collected a digital database, including a wide range of historical material; then, we developed a presentation medium that allows viewers to navigate the virtual reconstructions and access the archival material following their curiosity and interests. User tests underlined the capability of the application to facilitate a deep and meaningful exploration of the contents reinforcing the argument that virtual reality solutions represent valuable tools to engender awareness and explorative attitudes towards heritage

    Bio-inspired Sensing and Actuating Architectures for Feedback Control of Civil Structures

    Civil structures, such as buildings and bridges, are constantly at risk of failure due to external environmental loads, such as earthquakes or strong winds. To minimize the effects of these loads, active feedback control systems have been proposed but such systems still face numerous challenges which impede their widespread adoption. In order to overcome many of these challenges, inspiration can be drawn from the signal processing and actuating techniques employed by the biological central nervous system to develop a bio-inspired control algorithm. In this study the front-end, signal processing techniques employed by biological sensory systems, and in particular the mammalian auditory system, are drawn upon in order to alleviate computations at the actuation node. This results in a simplistic control law that is a weighted combination of input information about the structure\u27s response such that F   =   WN , where F is the applied control force, W is a pre-determined weighting matrix, and N is a deconstructed representation of the structural response to the applied excitation. There is no empirical solution for deriving an optimal weighting matrix, W , and in this study numerous methods are explored in order to determine values for this matrix that produce the most effective control. These methods include particle swarm optimization, artificial neural networks, and optimal control theory. The various weighting matrices are integrated into the proposed bio-inspired control algorithm and applied in simulation to a five story benchmark structure. These methods are also compared to a traditional linear quadratic regulator (LQR) to gain insight into the overall performance of the bio-inspired control algorithm. Of the three training techniques, the particle swarm optimization technique offers the most effective control which is comparable in performance to the traditional LQR

    N-tree approximation for the largest Lyapunov exponent of a coupled-map lattice

    The N-tree approximation scheme, introduced in the context of random directed polymers, is here applied to the computation of the maximum Lyapunov exponent in a coupled map lattice. We discuss both an exact implementation for small tree-depth nn and a numerical implementation for larger nns. We find that the phase-transition predicted by the mean field approach shifts towards larger values of the coupling parameter when the depth nn is increased.     A Search for Stellar Obscuration Events due to Dark Clouds

    The recent detections of a large population of faint submillimetre sources, an excess halo gamma-ray background, and the extreme scattering events observed for extragalactic radio sources have been explained as being due to baryonic dark matter in the form of small, dark, gas clouds. In this paper we present the results of a search for the transient stellar obscurations such clouds are expected to cause. We examine the Macho project light curves of 48 x 10^6 stars toward the Galactic bulge, LMC and SMC for the presence of dark cloud extinction events. We find no evidence for the existence of a population of dark gas clouds with Av > 0.2 and masses between ~ 10^-4 and 10^-2 M_solar in the Galactic disk or halo.
