Science, Scientists and Literature. The Role of Literature in Promoting Science and Technology

Science and technology in terms of innovative ideas and technological advances has been reflected by numerous well-known and representative literary works. This was first witnessed at the beginning of the nineteenth century, which marked the most notorious social impact of scientific activity. Here, we show how the debate between science and humanities is unfruitful, because the mutual influence of these two ways of thinking shows that they are equally human and have constantly influenced each other, and even more so today. In this article we discuss countless examples of novels and stories influenced by new scientific ideas, and also some cases where literary creativity has provided words for highly original scientific vocabulary. La presencia de la ciencia y la tecnología a través de sus ideas innovadoras y avances tecnológicos se ha visto reflejada en numerosas obras bien conocidas y representativas de la literatura universal. Este hecho se da, sobre todo, a partir del siglo XIX, cuando empieza el impacto social más notorio de la actividad científica en la sociedad. Con este artículo queremos mostrar que el debate entre las ciencias y las humanidades es estéril, ya que la influencia mutua de estas dos formas de pensamiento muestra que son igualmente humanas y se han influido constantemente, más aún cuanto más nos acercamos a la actualidad. En el artículo se mencionan innumerables ejemplos de novelas y narraciones influidas por nuevas ideas de la ciencia y también algún caso en que la creatividad literaria ha suministrado palabras para el vocabulario científico más original. Resultados obtenidos introduciendo la historia de la ciencia en las clases de Física y Química: mejora de la imagen de la ciencia y desarrollo de actitudes positivas

SUMMARY This is a report about research and results in the application of History of Science to Science Teaching. After a first approach to analyse which is today¿s status of History of Science in high school Physics and Chemistry classes, we attempt to demonstrate that an appropriate introduction of several aspects of history and sociology of Science in our classes can operate a significant improvement in pupil¿s image and attitudes in Science and Science Teaching. We will show that several groups of pupils from 15 to 17 improve significantly their interest in Science after at least a year working with papers containing many different activities that involve different historical aspects of Science, i.e., context biographies, original papers, reports on STS in history or videos showing the making and growth of major concepts in Physics and Chemistry

El impacto de las nuevas tecnologías de la información y de la comunicación en el sistema escolar

Summary One of the aims of the school as institution is to insert pupils, generally children and teenagers, in a culture developped in a wider social and economical context. School centres are strongly encouraged to accept the rules imposed by the social reproduction system leading groups. That is why the incorporation of the new technologies means, as printing press and audiovisual aids did in the past, a chance to spread knowledge among a bigger number of people, but -at the same time- it involves the risk of a mechanical, uncritical cultural assimilation which is likely to make clients more than citizens. Key words: Education system, new technologies of information and knowledge, relationships between science and history Una de las finalidades de la escuela como institución es insertar a los alumnos, niños y adolescentes por lo general, en la cultura desarrollada en un contexto social y económico más diverso. Los centros escolares reciben numerosos estímulos para aceptar las reglas impuestas por los grupos hegemónicos en el sistema de reproducción social. Por ello la incorporación de las nuevas tecnologías representa, como en su momento fue la imprenta y los medios audiovisuales, una oportunidad para difundir el conocimiento entre un mayor número de ciudadanos, pero -al mismo tiempo- supone un riesgo de una asimilación cultural mecánica, poco crítica y que forme más a clientes que a ciudadanos. Use of socio-scientific issues in order to improve critical thinking competences

Abstract This article analyzes the implications of the use of socio-scientific issues (SSI) in a series of critical thinking competences. For this, a didactic intervention with 3 SSIs is carried out, developed during 16 weeks, in which there were 56 students who participated in a program of education in the sciences. A quasi-experimental design was used and there is a comparison of the pre-test and post-test to describe the influence of the intervention. The test information was assessed from an analysis qualitative and quantitative that compares the type of participant responses once the intervention. The study allows us to see the incidence of the SSIs in aspects, such as the acknowledgement of science as a social activity, the questioning of information, the multi-dimensional approach to the sciences, and the making of ethical judgments and fundamental decisions. In this way, this research demonstrates how the SSis for assuming scientific issues with social implications, are a possibility to motivate and promote the development of critical thinking in students of teacher training in Natural Sciences. Determining the efficiency of optical sources using a smartphone's ambient light sensor

This work reports the use of a smartphone’s ambient light sensor as a valuable tool to study and characterize the efficiency of an optical source. Here, we have measured both luminous efficacy and efficiency of several optical sources (incandescent bulb and halogen lamp) as a function of the electric power consumed and the distance to the optical detector. The illuminance of LEDs as a function of the distance to the optical detector is characterized for different wavelength emissions. Analysis of the results confirms an inverse-square law of the illuminance with the detector–source distance and shows good agreement with values obtained by classical experiments. Technology as 'Applied Science': a Serious Misconception that Reinforces Distorted and Impoverished Views of Science

The current consideration of technology as 'applied science', this is to say, as something that comes 'after' science, justifies the lack of attention paid to technology in science education. In our paper we question this simplistic view of the science-technology relationship, historically rooted in the unequal appreciation of intellectual and manual work, and we try to show how the absence of the technological dimension in science education contributes to a na¿ ve and distorted view of science which deeply affects the necessary scientific and technological literacy of all citizens
