    Experiential landscape place: Exploring experiential potential in neighbourhood settings

    Experiential landscape place research is concerned with developing an open space design vocabulary to inform processes of urban place making in residential settings. It contributes to contemporary urban design and landscape architectural practice by emphasising quality of place, rather than mere provision for dwelling, in making residential settings that can sustain a good quality of life for their inhabitants. A conceptual framework has been developed to show how a range of human experience can be conceptualised spatially as four components called centre, direction, transition and area. The paper will build from this intellectual foundation to describe the development and application of methodology to map and analyse experiential potential in residential settings. This can reveal, for example, the potential of the site to encourage different types of place attachment in people, its capability to aid and facilitate orientation, and enhance or stimulate a sense of neighbourhood. This contributes to longer-term research objectives by accumulating data that are being used to hypothesise typical spatial and physical properties and characteristics for centre, direction, transition and area. Work conducted to date has focused on types of centre (subjectively significant locations) associated with restorative benefits. © 2005 Palgrave Macmillan Ltd

    Revealing the Hidden Dimensions of Place Experience in Primary School-aged Children

    The everyday local environment of incidental spaces routinely encountered by children is an important contributor to their social development and general health and wellbeing. There remains, however, a significant loss of connection between children and outdoor settings and this is increasingly raised as an issue that may have long-term implications. It is now recognised as important that the voices of children should play a pivotal role in the arrangement and content of their spatial realm and that achieving this will require new ways to understand children’s perceptions of place and how this contributes to individual and social development. This paper outlines UK-based doctoral research to develop a range of participatory tools to facilitate exploration and analysis of the spatial experiences of primary school-age children with particular reference to their perceptions of the outdoor places they encounter in their daily life patterns

    Transitional edges: a conceptual framework for socio-spatial understanding of urban street edges

    This paper develops a conceptual framework of transitional edges to enhance understanding of the social value of urban street edges. Building from theoretical principles associated with socio-spatial understandings of urban realms, transitional edges conceptualise urban street edges as integrations of their social, spatial and material dimensions. This is captured in a tripartite structure highlighting socially relevant properties of transitional edges that act along them (extent), across them (laterality) and within them (locality). This provides a foundation for developing an approach to practical application based on identification and evaluation of transitional edges as assemblages of territorialised segments. To progress this, a developmental study of a length of Sharrow Vale Road in Sheffield, UK was carried out to explore how theoretical principles of the transitional edge conceptual framework could be translated for practical application. This reveals the potential of transitional edges to highlight that locally focused small scale change and adaptation may be significant to the social potential of urban street edges. As a result, the current study sets out theoretical and practical foundations for a conceptual framework of transitional edges which will support development of an extensive funded programme of transitional edge case study research

    Don't skate here: Exclusion of skateboarders from urban civic spaces in three Northern Cities in England

    Skateboarders, who are predominantly young people, inhabit the fabric of urban conurbations in a way that no other group of open space users do. They have been identified as challenging capital norms, cultural forms and having a unique physical relationship with urban form. In city centres they choose to use specific civic spaces which provide opportunities for tricks. In some city centres skateboarders are excluded from using specific civic spaces by a series of social, legal and physical controls. This paper explores these issues in the context of three northern cities in England in order to develop a deeper understanding of the design approaches used to exclude skateboarders. Finally, the paper discusses the relationship between social, legal and physical controls to exclude skateboarders from specific civic spaces in these city centres. © 2011 Taylor & Francis

Classroom mathematical activity, in which certain ways of acting, behaving and knowing are given value, is located in a wider network of socio-political practices. Learning in mathematics is regarded as coming to participate in the discourse of the community that practises the mathematics. I argue that the use of a socio-political perspective allows the researcher and teacher to view classroom mathematical activity as a product of the network of socio-political practices in which it is located, rather than as a product of individual cognitive ability. I illustrate the use of this perspective by drawing on a study of learning in a first-year university access course in Mathematics at a South African university. Fairclough's method for critical discourse analysis, supplemented with work by Sfard and Morgan in mathematics education, was used to analyse both the text of a 'real world' problem in mathematics and a transcript representing the activity as a group of five students solved the problem. This analysis suggests that, despite containing traces of discourses from outside of mathematics, the problem text constructs the activity as solving a mathematical problem with features of a school mathematical word problem. When solving the problem the students draw on practices associated with school mathematics and their university mathematics course, some of which enable and others constrain their participation. For example, they refer to named functions learned at school, they have difficulty making productive links between the mathematical functions and the 'real world' context, and they have varied opportunities for mathematical talk in the group. The study identifies as key to the students' progress the presence of an authority (in this case a tutor) who can make explicit the ways of thinking, acting, and talking that are valued in the discourse of undergraduate mathematics, and who provides opportunities for mathematical talk

    Can deliberate efforts to realise aspirations increase capabilities? A South African case study

    This paper takes up Appadurai's suggestion that aspirations could be used as a key to unlock development for people who are economically marginalised, and that their capabilities could be increased by this approach. The notion of “aspirations” is theoretically and conceptually framed, and then Amartya Sen's use of the term capabilities as the space within which development should be assessed is explored. I subsequently describe a five-year programme in which economically marginalised women in Khayelitsha near Cape Town were assisted in voicing and attempting to realise their aspirations, while being assisted with access to some resources. Capability outcomes and constraints are described and analysed, and the question of adaptive preferences is addressed. I conclude that deliberate efforts to realise aspirations, accompanied by some facilitation, can increase capabilities, but that there are also structural constraints to capability expansion for these women that frustrate their aspiration of class mobility.International Bibliography of Social Science

    Validation of the INCREMENT-SOT-CPE score in a large cohort of liver transplant recipients with carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales infection

    Background: Management of infections due to carbapenemase-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients remains a difficult challenge. The INCREMENT-SOT-CPE score has been specifically developed from SOT recipients to stratify mortality risk, but an external validation is lacking.Methods: Multicenter retrospective cohort study of liver transplant (LT) recipients colonized with CRE infection who developed infection after transplant over 7-year period. Primary endpoint was all-cause 30-day mortality from infection onset. A comparison between INCREMENT-SOT-CPE and other selected scores was performed. A two-level mixed effects logistic regression model with random effects for the center was fitted. Performance characteristics at optimal cut-point were calculated. Multivariable Cox regression analysis of risk factors for all-cause 30-day mortality was carried out.Results: Overall, 250 CRE carriers developed infection after LT and were analyzed. The median age was 55 years (interquartile range [IQR]: 46-62) and 157 were males (62.8%). All-cause 30-day mortality was 35.6%. A sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score >= 11 showed a sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and accuracy of 69.7%, 76.4%, 62.0%, 82.0%, and 74.0%, respectively. An INCREMENT-SOT-CPE >= 11 reported a sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and accuracy of 73.0%, 62.1%, 51.6%, 80.6% and 66.0%, respectively. At multivariable analysis acute renal failure, prolonged mechanical ventilation, INCREMENT-SOT-CPE score >= 11 and SOFA score >= 11 were independently associated with all-cause 30-day mortality, while a tigecycline-based targeted regimen was found to be protective.Conclusions: Both INCREMENT-SOT-CPE >= 11 and SOFA >= 11 were identified as strong predictors of all-cause 30-day mortality in a large cohort of CRE carriers developing infection after LT

    Wintering grounds, population size and evolutionary history of a cryptic passerine species from isotopic and genetic data

    Cryptic species pose a particular challenge to biologists in the context of life history investigations because of the difficulty in their field discrimination. Additionally, there is normally a lag in their widespread acceptance by the scientific community once they are formally recognised. These two factors might constrain our ability to properly assess the conservation status of the different species conforming a cryptic complex. In this study, we analysed isotopic and genetic data to shed light into the still unclear wintering grounds, population size and evolutionary history of the Iberian chiffchaff Phylloscopus ibericus, a species included within the common chiffchaff Phylloscopus collybita until two decades ago due to their phenotypic similarity. We used molecular methods to identify spring-migrating Phylloscopus species captured in northern Iberia, and by comparing the Hydrogen isotopic ratios of their claw tips (ÎŽ2Hc; which would reflect the signatures of their wintering grounds), we detected that ÎŽ2Hc values of Iberian chiffchaffs were similar to willow warblers (Phylloscopus trochilus; a renowned trans-Saharan migrant), and higher than common chiffchaffs (mostly a pre-Saharan migrant). These results strongly support the idea that Iberian chiffchaffs winter in tropical Africa. We additionally reconstructed the phylogeny and evolutionary history of the Iberian chiffchaff's clade using mitochondrial and nuclear markers. Our results revealed relatively high values of nucleotide diversity (and, hence, high Ne) for the species that were greater than the values of the common/Iberian most recent common ancestor. This suggests that the Iberian chiffchaff did not experience strong bottlenecks after diverging from the common chiffchaff approximately one million years ago.
